Cheryl Maes, O.T.R., is writing a book and is looking for your help. She is asking that adults prepare three suggestions, recommendations and/or words of advice that they would give to children. Likewise, she would like children of any age to do the same-give three suggestions, recommendations and/or words of advice that they would give to adults. If Cheryl uses these in her book, she would need to have the "author" to sign a release. Please look into your heart and give this some consideration. Cheryl would greatly appreciate your input. Therapy Dogs and Visiting Pets
Visiting Pets and Animal Assisted Therapy
What is a therapy dog or therapy pet?
"Visiting Pets" "Therapy Dogs" "Therapy Pets" are just some of the names given to describe programs in which animals help people just by visiting with them. As participation in such programs grows so does the vocabulary describing different aspects of pet visiting. For example, the preferred use for the term " Animal Assisted Therapy " is for formal treatment programs, usually involving one particular animal and handler assigned to one particular client. The handler and the health care provider consult on specific goals to be accomplished, and plan how to accomplish those goals. The preferred use for more informal programs is " Animal Assisted Activities ." You will see a great variety of terms as groups struggle to find terms that are descriptive without being confusing. The most commonly used term for a dog visiting in residential care facilities is "therapy dog."
Why take animals visiting in health care facilities?

SHEN is an effective and predictable therapy, solidly based in physics and physiology, and proven with 25 years of clinical research and professional application.
SHEN is best known for superb results with any condition where retained, traumatic experiences have impacted either psychological or physical functioning.
EMOTIONS, PAIN AND YOUR BODY
Research has shown us that our bodies react to emotional pain such as fear, grief, shaming, etc, the same way they do to physical pain by contracting.
Most of us carry wounds today from earlier experiences, and have developed ways of relating based on our reactions to and our conclusions about those experiences. Many of us have had physical trauma such as accidents, injuries, or surgery, or suffered from traumatic births or childhoods, lost loved ones or had abusive relationships.
Until and unless they are released, these feelings and behavior patterns originating from past experiences are retained in our bodies, where they strongly influence how we relate, how we feel, and how we live our lives today.
