144. The Alexander Technique:
A physical therapist explains the relationship between these two fields.

The Alexander Technique and Physical Therapy by Deborah Caplan PT Benefits for both Therapist and Patient Physical therapists use their bodies in their work. Often neck, shoulder and back pain results. The patient gets better, but the therapist slowly gets worse. The Alexander Technique is a set of guidelines for using the body efficiently in daily activities. It has proved helpful as an addition to the treatment protocol for patients with back problems. It can also be of benefit to the physical therapist. Since my mother was trained as an Alexander Technique teacher by the Technique's originator, F.M. Alexander, I grew up with his work as part of my life. I didn't give it too much thought originally, except to consider it a bit odd, as was any mind/body discipline in the 1940s. My first real appreciation of Alexander's work came as I applied it to dancing, an early interest of mine. Some years later, after becoming an Alexander teacher, I chose physical therapy, which required gaining a more detailed technical knowledge of the body's structure. Alexander did not spring from medical roots. He was, first and foremost, an artist. But his process of self-observation in resolving his vocal problem is a fine example of the scientific method. When I started my physical therapy career, I soon realized that, by applying the Alexander Technique to myself while I treated patients, I could avoid a lot of stress and discomfort in my own body. As I sat in my anatomy classes, I found myself delighting in the harmonious match existing between human structure and Alexander's instructions for improved body movement, what he called "use."

The Story Behind UE PT Physical Therapy Programs
were first offered at the University in 1975 with the development of the Physical Therapist Assistant Program. Today, a maximum of 28 students are admitted to this program annually and receive an Associate Degree in Physical Therapy Assistance. The majority of the students enrolled in this program continue with their studies at the University and also complete a Bachelor’s degree in a related area.
The professional entry-level Physical Therapy program was established in 1979 and a Bachelor's of Science degree in Physical Therapy was initially awarded. Twelve students were enrolled in the program with two full time faculty members. In 1982 the class size was increased to 22 students with four full time faculty members and in 1986 the enrollment was again increased to 24 students. In 1991, the Master of Physical Therapy curriculum was implemented with 32 students and additional faculty. The class size was increased again in 1997 to accommodate up to 40 students. There are now 9.5 full time faculty members as well as a number of adjunct faculty members with expertise in a variety of content areas.
The Department of Physical Therapy is located in Wallace Graves Hall and is part of the College of Education and Health Sciences. There are four physical therapy laboratories. Expansion of the labs occurred in 1989, 1996 and 1998 to accommodate the increased number of students in both programs. One of the laboratories accommodates a two-dimensional movement analysis system as well as isokinetic testing equipment, a balance system, and lite gait treadmill. There is also a separate cadaver laboratory in the same building.

147. WSAVA 2001 - Physical Therapy In Veterinary Medicine
Summary of presentation at the World Small Animal Veterinary Association WorldCongress, by Robert Taylor, DVM.
http://www.vin.com/VINDBPub/SearchPB/Proceedings/PR05000/PR00205.htm
Physical Therapy in Veterinary Medicine Robert Taylor United States There is a lot of interest in canine physical therapy and rehabilitation and courses are being offered at many of the major meetings. There is one certification process in motion, which will be sanctioned by several universities, and active canine physical therapy-related research is happening. What has triggered this interest? There are several factors to consider: 1. Public demand. 2. Emergence of the working dog; with need to return to previous level of activity. 3. Demonstrated efficacy in other species (man). 4. Increased sophistication in veterinary surgery. 5. Animals are living longer. 6. Adds value to veterinary services. 7. Potential source of veterinary income. 8. Rewarding to veterinary staff, owner and animal. In the recent past, there was little attention paid to post operative care and many animals were lost to follow-up following suture removal. This, coupled with the notion that the animal would use the limb when it felt “good” and the reluctance on the part of veterinarians to urge early mobility, were factors that limited the use and concept of physical therapy. In spite of recent advances, there are still veterinary surgeons that routinely immobilize their post-operative cruciate patients for four to six weeks, and this is often done with casts, braces, or splints. Early motion has been shown to be efficacious in hastening recovery and limiting the effects of disuse on bone, cartilage, periarticular soft tissue, ligaments, and tendons.
