WVC Special Report
February 13, 2001
By Steve Dale When veterinarians treated pets for many illnesses 20 years ago, success was definitely a crap shoot. Today, the odds have shifted. This is the message of the 73rd Annual Western Veterinary Conference, February 11 through 15 in Las Vegas. "Overall, anything that can be done for people can be done for your pet," says Dr. Stephen Crane, the conference executive director. And when he means anything, he's means pretty much anything - even physical therapy. Once perhaps a subject for a cartoon: A dog getting into an accident with a cat, and is suing the cat - as directed by a sleazy lawyer he's wearing a neck brace and gets physical therapy. But that's not quite how veterinary supporters of physical therapy envision use of this technique. Dr. Peter Schwarz, a Board Certified surgeon in Albuquerque, New Mexico, says he treated a Lhaso apso with a herniated disc. Twenty years ago, this dog would have been euthanized. Today, surgery is a viable option, but complete mobility is not always regained following this serious procedure. Schwarz says that indeed, at first, the Lhaso was not recovering well. However, after three weeks of electrical stimulation and hydrotherapy (physical therapy in water), the dog not only walked again - but recovered fully.

SPECIAL OLYMPIC WINTER GAMES The FPTA and the Special Olympics committee, chaired by Tom Fischer, are now in the process of identifying volunteers for the Winter games to be held on November 4-5, 2005 in Bradenton, Florida. The FunFitness program is an APTA/FPTA sponsored event which typically takes place twice a year at the Spring and Fall Special Olympics. It consists of a screening program for Special Olympics athletes to check for functional flexibility, balance, coordination, strength, functional reach, and endurance. It does not require any special skills, only a desire to give back to the community. It is open to all physical therapists, physical therapist assistants and students of any accredited program in the state of Florida. Trained physical therapists are in attendance to teach the proper methods to screen the athletes. Lodging and food is provided to all volunteers who need it. . If interested please contact Tom Fischer at 772-370-1098. Resumes are required and will be forwarded to Special Olympics.

Parents Caring for a Seriously or Chronically Ill Child
If your child has been injured or has any sort of movement problems resulting from an illness, disease, or disability, a doctor may recommend that your child go through physical therapy. This kind of treatment is typically geared to provide pain relief, and to help a child resume normal activities. A doctor might prescribe physical therapy for an infant who isn't reaching basic developmental milestones like rolling, sitting, or walking. If your child has a sports injury, a physical therapist may be able to help your child regain strength and movement and help your child return to the game. A physical therapist may also be able to show your child how to prevent a recurring injury. When Is Physical Therapy Needed?
Physical therapy can be helpful even in a child's very early years. A doctor might prescribe physical therapy if your child is coping with a wide range of health issues, which can include:
  • developmental delays
  • cerebral palsy
  • traumatic brain injuries
  • muscular dystrophy
  • chromosome disorders
  • orthopedic injuries
  • heart problems
  • spina bifida or spinal cord injuries
  • fetal exposure to alcohol or drugs
  • acute trauma
  • limb deficiencies
  • muscle weakness
  • brachial plexus injuries
  • muscle or joint pain

An exploration of the relationship between these two fields.

The Alexander Technique and Physical Therapy by John A. Macy, PT Many people interested in the Alexander Technique ask how it is related to Physical Therapy, which often is the only intervention in movement with which they are familiar. The two fields have a number of common concerns, but there are also some important differences. Physical Therapy is a broad field which treats movement dysfunction from a primarily medical approach. The Alexander Technique, however, teaches people to change dysfunctional movement patterns by educating clients in how to change their daily habits of movement and posture.
The Alexander Technique is an educational process that focuses on changing the way a person thinks about and performs their activities and improving the way the activities are done. The Technique works by helping people change what they do with the innate mechanisms which permit us to exert fine control over the way we move. The teacher examines how common tasks, such as getting out of a chair and walking, are performed and then directs the client to make changes in select components of the task. These changes usually involve changing the coordination and timing of smaller movements, such as the balance of the head on the neck, or the timing between different joint motions.

Physical therapists are health care professionals who address the needs of patients and clients by helping them restore, maintain, and attain optimal physical function. Physical therapists work closely with other rehabilitation and health professionals to "provide services to patients and clients who have impairments, functional limitations, disabilities, or changes in physical function and health status resulting from injury, disease or other causes." Their primary goal is to help their patients achieve optimal health-related quality of life. Physical therapists work closely with patients, family members and caregivers during a difficult time in the patient's life. Successful physical therapists are caring professionals who are able to understand problems in the lives of their patients and have true empathy for their situation. They are knowledgeable and creative problem solvers who are motivated by a desire to help their patient achieve optimal function and reach their life goals. During their educational preparation, physical therapy students receive extensive academic preparation and develop skills in examination, evaluation, diagnosis, prognosis and intervention that are grounded in established theoretical foundations and scientific evidence.
