PHYSICAL THERAPY AND THE ALEXANDER TECHNIQUE HOMEPAGE Articles, Books, Videos and Links Physical therapists and Alexander Technique teachers both work with people who have posture and movement dysfunctions. Physical therapists treat their patients within a medical model while Alexander Technique practitioners regard themselves as teachers and work within an educational model. The two fields have many intertwining interests and concerns. Unfortunately, there has been little information regarding the Alexander Technique available for people in the physical therapy community. This page is designed to help bridge this knowledge gap. It is a forum for articles and other sources of information regarding the Alexander Technique written mainly by or for physical therapists and other medical professionals. Marquette Physical Therapy Commitment to Excellence
in its DPT Program
Marquette University's Department of Physical Therapy (MUPT) is committed to excellence in teaching, research and service. This commitment is reflected in our national reputation for physical therapy education. Ranked in the top 25% of all academic physical therapy programs (US News and World Report College Guide), Marquette faculty have won 25 national awards from the American Physical Therapy Association (APTA) since1989. Faculty awards include seven distinguished awards for teaching, seven for research, nine for service, and one for outstanding clinical practice. Moreover, MUPT students over the same time frame have won eight national awards. These include three student winners of APTA's Minority Scholarship Award for Excellence, and seven winners of the Mary McMillan Scholarship Award given to the top physical therapy students in the country. Five out of the last six years students have won the McMillan Scholarship Award. It should be noted that three of our faculty members were former McMillan Scholarship Award winners as physical therapy students. Thus, we have both a history and a tradition as McMillan Scholars.

A little bit of department trivia : I chose the "nature" theme for this site because we are located in the mountains in the northeast corner of the state of Tennessee (we have a 'mountain home' so to speak). What makes this interesting is that the department is housed in Building 2 on the grounds of the Quillen College of Medicine/Veterans Affairs Medical Center, a federal installation in Mountain Home, TN - a town within the town of Johnson City! And it is just across the street from the main ETSU campus.

Physical Therapy Corner: The Temporomandibular Joint
The temporomandibular joints (TMJ) are among some of the most frequently used joints in the body, allowing us to talk, chew, yawn, swallow and sneeze. The TMJ are located on each side of the cranium. To find your TMJ, place your fingers in front of each ear and open your mouth, you will feel an indentation beneath your finger. The two bones that form the TMJ are the mandible (jaw) located inferiorly, and the temporal bone of the skull (located more superiorly) (see Figure 1). A disc that is connected to the capsule divides the joint cavity into inferior and superior spaces. (see Figure 2) Temporomandibular joint dysfunction (TMD) is often overlooked. Some of the more common symptoms include clicking or popping with opening or closing of the mouth, pain around the jaw joints, locking of the jaw, headaches and an improper bite (teeth do not fit together properly) (see Figure 3). Most often, TMD can be treated conservatively. However, it is important that a qualified clinician such as a physical therapist, dentist, or orthopedist is consulted for an accurate diagnosis since many conditions can mimic the signs and symptoms common to TMD.
Movements of the TMJ
Both TMJ must work in coordination in order to allow normal movement to occur. The TMJ allow us to open and close the mouth, protrude, retract, and laterally move the jaw (mandible) right and left. Normally, opening should be about 35-40 mm. A good test to determine normal opening is being able to fit about 2 or 3 knuckles into your mouth. If you cannot open your mouth this wide, you may have a hypomobile (decreased range of motion) TMJ.

WCPT commits to evidence based practice
Leaders of Member Organisations, Regions and Subgroups convened in London England , in October 2001 for a landmark WCPT meeting on evidence based practice. The planned meeting came after a March 2000 decision of the Executive Committee to support international efforts in this area. According to WCPT Secretary General Brenda Myers, "the goals of the WCPT meeting of experts in October 2001 were for Member Organisations to exchange information, develop a shared vision for evidence based practice in physical therapy, and to develop plans for collaborative international projects." The outcome of this meeting is a programme of work to support the development of EBP in physical therapy. A report of the meeting has been sent to all Member Organisations and subgroups, as well as participants at the meeting. It can be accessed using the following links:
