AN INTERDISCIPLINARY APPROACH: LITERATURE IN MATHEMATICAL EDUCATION The existence of literary texts concerning mathematics leads to an interdisciplinary challenge. Literature could motivate and support mathematical learning. Different approaches are possible according to the category of “mathematical literature”. Short stories or poems often touch aspects of mathematics and motivate them. A long text with a substantial mathematical background can be read in co-operation with the language lesson. The mathematics can be worked out and learned through interdisciplinary discussion. If the author has a problematic view of mathematics, it has to be the task of mathematical education to generate a realistic image of mathematics. In the present paper examples are given and a special software called MATEX is introduced. This software connects short literary texts and mathematical learning.

Jumping off point
The World Wide Web (the Web) is being used to complement traditional lecture/tutorial/practical delivery systems for teaching science at the University of Melbourne. Projects now beginning involve physics and zoology. Academic staff, at the same time as they are preparing learning materials for the Web, are considering the value for students and staff which may be gained by using this new internet-based communication medium. Thus, at a recent workshop at the University of Melbourne named Teaching and Learning on the Web (
