Tamara Shapiro Ledley , a senior scientist at TERC in Cambridge Massachusetts, received her PhD from MIT in meteorology 1983. She conducted a research program in Earth system science and global climate change with a focus on the polar regions at Rice University for 15 years and has authored over 30 scientific papers. She has also been involved in Earth system science education activities. These activities include the development of a museum exhibit to bring near real time images of the Earth to the public, the directing of teacher training programs in the Earth sciences, working with a high school students to study the influence of El Nino on the polar oceans, providing scientific reviews of Earth science text books and the Massachusetts Science and Technology/Engineering Curriculum Framework. Dr. Ledley has received NSF grants to develop an Earth System Scientist Network in which she works with scientists and educators to develop scientists’ research projects for the participation of high school students; and to develop the Earth Exploration Toolbook which will provide teachers with step by step instructions on how to use Earth science datasets and tools in an educational context. Other current work includes directing the development the Earth as a System chapter of the Teacher’s Guide for the NSF sponsored GLOBE program, and contributing to the development of a group of museum exhibits for the NASA sponsored Museums Teaching Planet Earth project. She is also active in the Federation of Earth Science Information Partners (ESIP Federation), the National Science Digital Library (NSDL), and in the Digital Library for Earth Systems Education (DLESE).

With funding provided by Loyola University, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) and CPS, teachers will take 9 courses in science and science education over a 3 year period. These graduate level courses will count toward our developing Masters of Education degree in Science Education. The program includes six science courses and three science education courses. All courses will be offered in the summer and late spring, along with enhancement activities throughout the academic year. Participants successfully completing the program will not only earn an endorsement in middle school science education but will also be at or near completion of our developing M.Ed. in Science Education. Because of generous funding by Loyola, ISBE and CPS, this program will be
FREE OF CHARGE for the 24 selected applicants.

Faculty Focus, Fall 1995 Judy Foster, Professor of English Judy Foster, Professor of English, proudly asserts that her career focus has been on pedagogy. The wide range of courses she teaches-from the first year required composition class to the graduate seminars-and her discipline focus in American Literature and Rhetoric only speak to one aspect of that interest in teaching. Since she joined the English Department in 1979, Foster has co-coordinated the General Studies program and taught with the Honors program. While working with a three year FIPSe grant she developed an interdisciplinary curriculum for first year honor students, collaborating with physical science, math, social science, and history professors to develop an eight credit interdisciplinary block. The primary emphasis of Judy's scholarship is teaching; she is extending this passion to her work as an Advisory Committee member for the Center for Teaching Excellence.

Introduction
Language Barriers
  • Invite students to talk about topics they are familiar with connecting your lesson plans to their prior knowledge. Communicate realistic expectations for the students at the beginning and throughout the year. Use interactive technology to help students learn. Teachers should use cognitive coaching to help promote critical thinking skills by asking students who have correctly answered a problem "How did you get that? Why?" Incorporate advising programs in students' curriculum which will allow for contacts with the home. (Use translators when necessary). Be aware of the minority students in class, and create an accepting climate for them. Have students in class introduce themselves and share their experiences in order to educate others.
  • Avoiding Bias
Teachers must take an introspective look at their own cultural background, understanding the effects their biases have when interacting with students. Only then can teachers examine the backgrounds and needs of their student population and understand their students' cultural biases as well.
    • Recognize and understand the cultural differences among students from diverse backgrounds, and treat such differences with respect.

Drawing from the scholarship in policy, curriculum, and teaching, this course explores the major issues faced in urban science education, including (1) the issue of resources (physical, human, and social) in urban schools and how urban science education programs might draw from local resources in meeting the needs of urban learners, and (2) the issue of what roles might teachers, administrators, policy makers, and curriculum writers play in the design and implementation of empowering curricular and pedagogical practices in urban science classrooms. This course provides students with both research-based and field-based experiences. MSTC 4008 Urban Science Education II
MSTC 4008 will continue and draw on discussions begun in Urban Science Education I (MSTC 4007). This course will use cultural lenses and community perspectives to explore challenges and successes in teaching science well with students in public urban settings. We will explore the issues involved in public school science education, from school and classroom vantage points, and practices that represent the best of what we know about science teaching and learning, and how these play themselves out in urban education environments.
