That the camera cannot lie is true only in the sense that the images it captures must have existed in one form or another at some particular time. But it is not always clear if those images have been manipulated in some way to alter or to stage an event which never happened. We are familiar with historical photos that have been retouched to include or exclude political figures. We are less familiar with the potential of new technologies for falsifying images, particularly those that appear in newspapers and magazines. The following article introduces this topic and raises important ethical questions.
There were the huge printing shops with their sub-editors, their typography experts, and their elaborately equipped studios for the faking of photographs.
Photojournalism, photography that accompanies stories intended for newspaper and magazine readers, has a long and cherished tradition of truthfulness. The faking of photographs, either through stage direction by the photographer or through darkroom manipulation, unfortunately, also has a long tradition. As a result

PUBLICATIONS photographer Mothers in Icelandic Photographs This pioneering volume attempts to portray an historical summary of Icelandic photographs of mothers and to reveal the palpable changes in perceptions of motherhood from the late nineteenth century to the present. The book focuses on the interplay of artistic beauty and documentary in photographic form. Social psychologist Annadis G. Rudolfsdottir's article "Mother's Memory Lives Long: On Mothers in Icelandic Photographs", scrutinizes society's ideas concerning the mother's role and juxtaposes those ideas with the actual experience of mothering. The author delves into the development of the status of the mother figure in Icelandic society. Historian Gudbrandur Benediktsson summarizes the milestones of photographic history in his essay, " An Outline of the History of Photography ". Mothers in Icelandic Photographs contains over three hundred photographs taken by numerous photographers and amateurs. These photographs, very few of which have been printed before this publication, cover just over a century of Icelandic photographic history. Mothers in Icelandic Photography was Reykjavik Museum of Photography's contribution to the schedule of events entitled Reykjavik – Culture City 2000 Special Offer 3.000 kr

Technology and Culture - Volume 41, Number 4, October 2000, pp. 816-817
The Johns Hopkins University Press

Excerpt
This volume, based largely on collections at the National Museum of Photography, Film, and Television (a branch of the Science Museum) in Bradford, accompanied an exhibition held in spring 1999 to celebrate the reopening of the NMPFT after a major reorganization. It is not a traditional catalog, however, nor is it a history of photography, but rather an eclectic chronology, a series of short, episodic segments in which Ian Jeffrey moves from Talbot's and Daguerre's early work capturing shadows to recent color photos of space exploration. He regards technical developments as "moments of startlement," declaring that new mechanisms and formats "suddenly confronted operatives," surprising "both themselves and posterity" (p. 13). In the first part of the book, Jeffrey covers the period from photography's introduction in 1839 up to about 1860, musing on art, intention, and the rise of the medium's documentary function. In the next sections, on photomicrography,...

This photograph was made during a field trip I took with my students to the Kennedy Space Center in March 1995. Friday, September 2, 2005 11:37:21 AM 11:32:46 AM NY Times Waiting for a Leader ...While our attention must now be on the Gulf Coast's most immediate needs, the nation will soon ask why New Orleans's levees remained so inadequate. Publications from the local newspaper to National Geographic have fulminated about the bad state of flood protection in this beloved city, which is below sea level. Why were developers permitted to destroy wetlands and barrier islands that could have held back the hurricane's surge? Why was Congress, before it wandered off to vacation, engaged in slashing the budget for correcting some of the gaping holes in the area's flood protection? It would be some comfort to think that, as Mr. Bush cheerily announced, America "will be a stronger place" for enduring this crisis. Complacency will no longer suffice, especially if experts are right in warning that global warming may increase the intensity of future hurricanes. But since this administration won't acknowledge that global warming exists, the chances of leadership seem minimal.

anomalies-unlimited.com A Photographic History of Michael Jackson's Face
With blithering, yet witty commentary
age 21
Hard to believe - this was Michael Jackson. He was born August 28, 1958 - one of 9 kids. His father reportedly nicknamed him "Big Nose".
Mike was born a cute African-American guy. "Normal", if you will, and very talented. Despite the current, sad stories about his lonely, sad childhood, Mike grew up surrounded by famous people and an adoring public. At age 5, Mike and his brothers were the amazing 'Jackson 5'. They played locally, then in New York and Philly. They were "discovered" by Gladys Knight and pianist Billy Taylor at the famous Apollo Theater in Harlem. By age 11, Mike was a Superstar. At age 13 he went solo and had his first #1 hit at 14 with "Ben" (a touching love song to a rat). Who knew he'd get addicted to plastic surgery, face accusations of child molestation and end up America's Most Famous Sideshow? age 26 Mike gets his nose slightly narrowed and his eyebrows shaped. This was his "Thriller" Era and he was smokin'. People did notice this facial change and commented on it - guys just didn't do this back then.
