Aerial Perspectives Imagined and Real
These modest history pages will feature a few items found during my early research on alternate means for low-level aerial photography By far the most entertaining and useful resource the catalog of a museum exhibit loaned by my friend and colleague George Loisos. Titlted " cities: from the balloon to the satellite ", the catalog was published by the Centre de Cultura Contemporania de Barcelona under the direction of Albert Garcia Espuche. It chronicles the developing use of aerial images their contribution to our understanding of cities and their relationship to the landscape. I'm quite impressed with this catalog and would love to find a copy for my own collection.
Kite Aerial Photography's Precursors It must be a basic part of human nature to wonder how the world would appear from on high. One indicator is the existence of aerial views of our cities and landscapes long before human ability to fly. These early drawn aerial views are fascinating.

Introduction
The Women in Photography International Archive (WIP) is a grassroots, research-oriented agency. Its origins date from 1971, starting with a systematic study of the women photographers of California. Currently, the emphasis has shifted to include data concerning the role of women in photography globally. The WIP International Archive is a by-product of the larger task of identifying and extracting works by women photographers from an archive of 150,000 vintage photographs assembled by Peter E. Palmquist between 1971 and the early 1990s. Originally these images were gathered in support of a regional study focused on the photographic history of the Humboldt County area in rural Northwestern California. By the mid-1970s, this study had shifted to the entire state of California (predominantly the nineteenth century) and, in a lesser degree, to the greater West. Because of these targeted goals, the vast majority of all photographs presently inventoried continues to reflect at least some connection with California and the West. However, an ever increasing number of photographs by women working outside the United States has been added during the past five years.

America from the Great Depression to WWII
The images in the Farm Security Administration-Office of War Information Collection are among the most famous documentary photographs ever produced. Created by a group of U.S. government photographers, the images show Americans in every part of the nation. In the early years, the project emphasized rural life and the negative impact of the Great Depression, farm mechanization, and the Dust Bowl. In later years, the photographers turned their attention to the mobilization effort for World War II. The core of the collection consists of about 164,000 black-and-white photographs. This release provides access to over 112,000 of these images; future additions will expand the black-and-white offering. The FSA-OWI photographers also produced about 1600 color photographs during the latter days of the project. American Museum of Photography The American Museum of Photography is an award-winning Virtual Museum dedicated to educating, informing, and sharing great photographs with millions of Internet visitors world-wide. Exhibitions are drawn from the Museum's Collection, started by Wm. B. Becker more than 30 years ago. The Collection includes five thousand individual images, from the earliest daguerreotype portraits to the work of Ansel Adams. Each photograph has been chosen for its visual impact as well as for the importance of its content. American Photography: A Century of Images The PBS series, American Photography captures the images of a century of change and the role the camera has played both in creating and documenting it. Dramatic and intimate stories trace photography's profound effect on American life ? influencing what we buy, how we dress, how we get the news, and in matters of life and death, medicine, science and war.

The History of Photochemistry A substance which undergoes physical or chemical changes when subjected to light energy is called a photochemical substance.
The Foundations of Modern Photography
The Calotype Process
The calotype process was invented by William Henry Fox Talbot, and was the first positive/negative process. Fox Talbot soaked paper in a solution of sodium chloride, then in a solution of silver nitrate, which formed silver chloride on the paper. It was repeated several times to increase the concentration of the chemicals in the paper, and the paper was then exposed wet. By exposing it wet, and with so much chemicals on it, the exposure time required to darken the paper sufficiently was cut from an hour to ten minutes. Once exposed, the image was fixed with either potassium iodide or sodium chloride. In 1835, he produced what is thought to be his first successful negative on paper.
After further experiments over the forthcoming years, Fox Talbot discovered the invisible latent image and its development with chemicals. He began coating his negative paper with wax, making it more translucent, and was able to produce positive images by projecting the negative image onto a similar material. The essential principles of modern black and white photography are the same as those of the calotype process. However, the process has evolved, and has become much more efficient.

Photography
Soon after photography had been born in the early 1830s, endless discussions whether photography was an art or a technique began. For some, the birth of photography foretold the end of painting, drawing, lithography, engravings and prints, but many artists maintained that a machine could never produce a work of art.
Throughout the 19th century, photography was used for many different purposes. Photography was used for the first time for the photographic police files after the overthrow of the Paris Commune (1871). Scientists Muybridge and Marey used photography to break down movement. Painter Degas made use of photographs for his paintings. A great number of unknown photographers set up their shops and produced posed portraits, and explorers compiled albums of pictures taken in distant lands. Photography was ideally suited to recording the problems of modern life. One who contributed importantly to its rich documentary tradition was Eugene Atget.
But photographers consistently espoused the idea that photography was an art. They shared the belief that photography was a set of physical and chemical operations in which the artist played a key part by measuring, filtering and softening matter, shade and light, and specially by choosing subjects and settings. In the 1890s in Europe and the United States, these photographers were known as pictorialists - they were retouching their works with brushes.

A picture may be worth a thousand words, but you need to know how to analyze the picture to gain any understanding of it at all. Making Sense of Documentary Photography provides a place for students and teachers to grapple with the documentary images that often illustrate textbooks but are almost never considered as historical evidence in their own right. Written by James Curtis, this guide offers a brief history of documentary photography, examples of what questions to ask when examining a documentary photograph, and an annotated bibliography and list of online resources for documentary photography. James Curtis is Professor of History at the University of Delaware and Director of the Winterthur Program in Early American Culture. Curtis is the author of The Fox at Bay: the Presidency of Martin Van Buren Andrew Jackson and the Search for Vindication , and Mind's Eye, Mind's Truth, FSA Photography Reconsidered . Portions of this latter volume were the subject of a BBC documentary on photographs of Depression America. Curtis is currently at work on a book manuscript on the impact of racial attitudes on documentary photography during the 1930s.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Sometimes I envy dead white guys. Take the late nineteenth-century debate between English poet-critic Matthew Arnold and scientist Thomas Henry Huxley: should universities continue to vest students in western culture, or should they wake up to the demands of industrial society and offer practical courses? Arnold found the humanities plump as a partridge, ready to satisfy all appetites. I'm jealous of the illusion. The Arnold-Huxley debate came to mind during my initial attempts to outline an undergraduate minor in photographic studies. It is one thing to muse that the study of photographic practice should be archivally rich, socially aware and theoretically sophisticated, and another to find specific concepts, courses and careers that add up to a photographic education, even a "minor" one. Is there any there, there?
