26. Encyclopedia Of Twentieth-Century Photography
and anyone interested in a scholarly discussion of photography history. The encyclopedia introduces the reader to the history of technical issues
http://www.routledge-ny.com/ref/20Cphoto/introduction.html
(Note: Introduction is taken from uncorrected proofs. Changes may be made prior to publication.) Creating, in one useful, comprehensive publication, an encyclopedia of the history and practice of photography in the twentieth century is a daunting task. In any endeavor, the doing of it often best teaches how it should be done; and not only does the doing perfect the process, it refines the understanding of the subject of the endeavor, and focuses the content to be more authoritative. Such is the case, certainly, with the current project. The ambition of this project was to provide a useful resource of the entire scope of photography in the twentieth century. It was neither to be a definitive technical manual nor a compendium limited to the field's aesthetic achievements, but something more. The aim was to create an encyclopedia that would serve as a resource and a tool for a wide readership of students, researchers, and anyone interested in a scholarly discussion of photography history. In this we believe it succeeds. The encyclopedia introduces the reader to the history of technical issues that have changed over a hundred-year period. It explains the contributions of photographers and situates their contribution within the history of photography. It defines the concepts, terms, and themes that have evolved over a century. It describes the role of institutions and publications in the shaping of that history. Importantly, the encyclopedia also explains the development of the medium in specific countries and regions around the world-offering a global understanding and a more local perspective of photography history.

Of underwater photography history and prerequisites By Michel Gilbert and Danielle Alary With this edition we begin a series on underwater photography. Award winning writer/photographer Michel Gilbert will team up with his partner, Danielle Alary, to introduce our readers to this popular specialty. This team has worked extensively in the field over the past 15 years, publishing in North America and abroad. This series will cover the basics of underwater photography and, eventually, more advanced concepts. Feel free to write to us and ask questions. We welcome your letters or E-mail and we will pass them on to our contributors and publish the best questions.
The camera used by Louis Boutan was not as portable as modern tools.
This is one of the original pictures taken by Louis Boutan in 1893. In his excitement, the good looking underwater model turned the identification plate upside down. This may have been the very first photographic illustration of the well-known phenomenon known as nitrogen narcosis.
This drawing illustrates the procedure used by pioneer underwater photographer Louis Boutan circa 1893.

History of Photography
Although no one knows for sure when a camera-type device was first discovered, the camera obscura became popular among Renaissance artists who used it to trace the image projected by light shining through a tiny hole. The word photography was first used in the year the year the invention of the photographic process was made public During the prior decades, a number of light-sensitive materials were tested to capture the image from the camera obscura, but the first successful permanent photograph is usually credited to Louis Daguerre.
That picture, captured on a silver-coated sheet of copper, using his positive image Daguerreotype process, is entitled The Artist's Studio and is dated 1837. It was By the time the details of this process were made public, in 1839, other artists and scientists had discovered additional photographic imaging techniques. William Henry Fox Talbot's Calotype process used light-sensitive paper and produced a negative image that could be used to create positive prints These methods required long exposure time , animate objects could not be recorded.

A Little Photography History
The Daguerreotype
For ages, man has viewed objects and scenes and then wished to record his visions. Recording these visions first employed a laborious task employing both the hand and eye to create likenesses of what the artist saw. Then mechanical and optical devices were invented to help improve the accuracy of the record. The camera obscura evolved to become quite sophisticated, employing fine quality lenses and mirrors to cast sharp, clear images for artists to trace. But it took the Frenchman, Louis Jacques Mande Daguerre (born in Paris in 1787) to create the first commercially viable photograph. Daguerre began a partnership of research with Niepce that lasted until Niepce's death in 1833. It took Daguerre until 1837 to discover a system that worked successfully and was fast enough to be practical. Though the primary force in the development of the daguerreotype was to improve his commercial enterprise, all attempts to market the process failed. It was not until Daguerre's contact with respected French scientist Francois Arago that an enthusiastic response occurred. Through Arago's influence, the French government granted pensions to not only Daguerre but also the heirs of Niepce for the work done in the development of this extraordinary process. Soon thereafter, translations of the actual step-by-step methods were available worldwide and were considered France's gift to the world. As it turned out, the developer had very little to do with the process once his knowledge and methods were made public. He died in France in 1851.

Pinhole Photography - History, Images, Cameras, Formulas
      By Jon Grepstad
      Introduction
Pinhole photography is lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens. Light passes through the hole; an image is formed in the camera. Pinhole cameras are used for fun, for art and for science. Designing and building the cameras are great fun. Making images with cameras you have made yourself is a great pleasure, too. But in serious photography the pinhole camera is just an imaging device with its advantages and limitations, special characteristics and potentials. By making the best of the camera's potential great images can be produced. Some of the images could not have been produced with a lens.
      Characteristics
Nautilus drawing , originally taken from a book published by Arthur Willey in 1900, the eye is the oval opening to the upper right.
      History
Early Observations and Experiments The basic optical principles of the pinhole are commented on in Chinese texts from the fifth century BC. Chinese writers had discovered by experiments that light travels in straight lines. The philosopher Mo Ti (later Mo Tsu In the western hemisphere Aristotle (fourth century BC) comments on pinhole image formation in his work Problems . In Book XV, 6, he asks: "Why is it that when the sun passes through quadri-laterals, as for instance in wickerwork, it does not produce a figure rectangular in shape but circular? [...]" In Book XV, 11, he asks further: "Why is it that an eclipse of the sun, if one looks at it through a sieve or through leaves, such as a plane-tree or other broadleaved tree, or if one joins the fingers of one hand over the fingers of the other, the rays are crescent-shaped where they reach the earth? Is it for the same reason as that when light shines through a rectangular peep-hole, it appears circular in the form of a cone? [...]" (Aristotle 1936:333,341). Aristotle found no satisfactory explanation to his observation; the problem remained unresolved until the 16th century (Hammond 1981:5).

    Introduction
Pinhole photography is lensless photography. A tiny hole replaces the lens. Light passes through the hole; an image is formed in the camera. Pinhole cameras are small or large, improvised or designed with great care. Cameras have been made of sea shells, many have been made of oatmeal boxes, coke cans or cookie containers, at least one has been made of a discarded refrigerator. Cameras have been cast in plaster like a face mask, constructed from beautiful hardwoods, built of metal with bellows and a range of multiple pinholes. Station wagons have been used as pinhole cameras – and rooms in large buildings. Basically a pinhole camera is a box, with a tiny hole at one end and film or photographic paper at the other. Pinhole cameras are used for fun, for art and for science.

    Introduction
Print Preview of Section Photography, History of , development of the art and technique of producing images known as photographs. Photography is so much a part of life today that the average person in the United States may encounter more than 1000 camera images a day. Photographs preserve personal memories (family snapshots) and inform us of public events (news photos). They provide a means of identification (driver's license photos) and of glamorization (movie-star portraits); views of far-off places on Earth (travel photographs) and in space (astral photographs); as well as microscopic scenes from inside the human body (medical and scientific photos). Many specialized commercial categories, including fashion, product, and architectural photography, also fit under the broad umbrella that defines photography's function in the world today.
