This will allow you to use your pictures as you wish (for printing, e-mailing, archiving, etc.), and at the same time allow you to free up memory in your camera for taking more pictures. There are a couple of methods for doing this. Transferring Pictures Directly from Your Camera To move images directly from your camera, without removing the memory card, you'll hook your camera up to your computer using the USB ports and a USB cable (provided with your camera).
  • Plug your camera into a power outlet using an AC power-adapter. The adapter will allow you to preview and download your images without draining your batteries during this opeation.

September 2002 Minor Revision April 2005 In 2002 I switched to exclusively using digital cameras (a Nikon D100 as my main body and a Canon PowerShot S45 to be used as a P&S). I have found that image quality is "good enough" for most of my needs, and going all digital has been much more convenient, especially since my favorite E6 lab closed in mid-2002. In 2004 I switched to a Canon 20D as my main camera, and a Pentex S4 as a small and light P&S. For me, the single biggest change shooting digital has been that I feel free to "burn film" since the extra images don't cost me anything. I review the images and delete the images I don't like. I am taking more pictures and throwing out a lot of images. I am ending up with a smaller percent of keepers, but since I am shooting more images, the total number of keepers is going up. The instant gratitude is also nice. I believe 95% of the photographs in the USA, Japan, and Europe will be exclusively using digital cameras in five years. Why? Because digital gives you instant gratification, the work process is much easier (especially when you want to share images both electronically and prints), the quality of the images is good enough for most people most of the time, digital is cheaper in the long term, and archival characteristics of digital images are arguably better.

    Professional uses of digital photography
What do the words digital photography mean to you? If you're a professional photographer, digital photography is an exciting new area of development. For professionals trained in digital photography applications, employment continues to grow at an exceptional rate.
Creating and producing quality digital photography
The use of digital photography has become so widespread it sometimes seems that anyone can be an expert if they own the right camera. The truth is creating and producing quality images for Internet web pages or computer applications takes a great deal of skill. Professional level electronic images are just as highly valued as in traditional photographic practices. In fact, there is a tremendous demand for professionals who understand electronic image display for working in printing, publishing, multimedia and computer software interfaces. A new career, media specialist, has evolved over the years to encompass expertise in digital photography, conventional imaging, as well as video and motion picture applications. At Brooks, a special curriculum exists for this career path. The coursework relies upon a foundation of still photography, video and motion picture techniques. After completion of the coursework, graduates can work in the areas of computer imaging, electronic pre-press, web page design, multimedia and post production for video and film production.

Digital Photography Unless you’ve been trapped in a Tora-Bora cave for the last decade, you can’t say you haven’t heard of digital imaging. It is now the fastest-growing area of photography. It is growing so rapidly in fact that Kodak – arguably, the leader in photographic advancement – has decided to sell off their stock of film cameras and invest exclusively in digital imaging. With so many new products being launched every week, a new generation of people have become interested in photography. Within conventional circles, however, opinions vary. Many purists insist that film “the best” for producing clear shots. Other traditionalists feel they will lose the craftsmanship and art that goes into processing. But many disagree with these pretentious notions of photography: speed and efficiency in producing an image has taken priority, and if there is any pretense, it comes with the thought that the resulting image – how it makes us think and feel – is more important than “how you got the shot”. After all, photos are meant to be shown for what they are, in and of themselves. The photographer is secondary. But in reality, film-based photography is likely to be around for generations to come. In fact, the two technologies work verywell in tandem with one another, and you can truly master your digital techniques using your film camera.
