Since then it has developed a breadth of activities for its members to gain from. As a member of the Canadian Association of Photographers and Illustrators in Communications (CAPIC), some of the APPA’s activities are performed in conjunction with its national counterpart. APPA is a non-government organization dedicated to promoting excellence in the discipline of photography. Photography, being the diverse practice it is, draws individuals from varied backgrounds. Some of the APPA’s members have professional training in such areas as portraiture, outdoor family pictures, studio based and wedding photography. Other APPA members are simply dedicated and talented photographers who have, without formalized learning, developed high caliber capabilities. With the goal of creating a benchmark for photographers, the APPA has built up an accreditation process that is facilitated by the CAPIC. The accreditation process entails submission of a portfolio to a national jury, which takes skills in such areas as lighting and composition into account.

Photography on Public Lands Still Unclear
    May 22, 2003
The rules set forth by Congress in Public Law PL 106-206 attempted to set standards governing filming and photography on public lands. However, the issue has now moved to the adoption of the PL 106-206 language into the policies of various agencies.
Some agencies have used criteria that may be unclear to field personnel as to determination of when fees or permits may be required. NANPA strongly recommends that photographers on public lands be familiar with PL 106-206 and supporting language and carry copies with them in the field. Copies may be obtained from NANPA's Document Library at http://www.nanpa.org/docs.php In addition, be aware that authorities in various areas may not have the same view or interpretation of the language contained in PL 106-206 and that agencies may set policies which conflict with your own view of the law.

    Rethinking the Cover
Editors, an art director, and a photographer tell how they keep their covers fresh and compelling. by Christopher M. Wright Business editors got some great tips for improving their covers at a D.C. ASBPE panel presentation held September 29, 2004 in Washington, D.C. The event was sponsored by Robert Visser Photography located in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area (202-234-8787). Magazine, advertising, and public relations photography are among Visser's specialties. His assignments take him to trade association meetings, conferences, and press events. He likes input from art directors because it enables him to come up with unique cover shots. For a magazine that was profiling a lawyer who represents ice cream companies, Visser photographed the lawyer seated on a park bench eating an ice cream cone with a model representing the lawyer's four-year old daughter. Pamela Kabati, vice-president and editorial director for the National Association of Realtors Publications Group, described the long process

Digital Top Concern at NANPA Summit The North American Nature Photography Association (NANPA) held its 10th annual summit and trade show in January to discuss the pressing issues facing the nature photography industry, most notably the impact of digital technology. Topping the list of concerns at the meeting was digital photography and the upheaval it is causing among photographers and publishers. Several of the attendees said that digital submission standards are needed. Other topics on the minds of the professionals in attendance included declining stock revenues, access to public lands and the ethics of game-farm photography.

    OCPA's Associations
One day in 1996, we found out that there was going to be a convention of camera clubs in Coos Bay in October. And being the only camera club in the area, would we like to participate in this convention? You bet we would!
That was our first association with the Columbia Council of Camera Clubs (or " "), which we officially joined in 1997. Now, besides conventions, we participate in competitions and other activities. You can find out more about them on their website: www.columbiacouncil.com Some of our members had heard of the PSA long before OCPA joined in late '99. But with a little friendly persuasion from some of out friends (they wanted us to enter our newsletter into the International Bulletin Contest - which, by the way, we received a Honorable Mention in our 2nd year of competition) and the opportunity to have access to learning material, we joined up. While we have not yet competed in PSA competitions, we have had the pleasure of judging one of their International Club Print Competitions in February 2003.
