Astronomical Photographs by David Malin, Anglo-Australian Observatory
The Techniques
Most of the color photographs in this catalogue are made with the 3.9m Anglo-Australian Telescope (AAT) or the UK Schmidt Telescopes, located on Siding Spring Mountain in New South Wales, Australia. When the AAT is used as a camera it has a focal length of 12.7 meters and a focal ratio of f/3.3, a very impressive reflecting 'lens'. The field of view covers 1 degree of sky (about twice the diameter of the full moon) and the images are recorded on special black and white photographic emulsions coated on glass plates 255 mm (10 inches) square. The UK Schmidt is primarily a photographic survey telescope and has a focal length of 3.07m with a focal ratio of F/2.5. It photographs a 6.6 x 6.6 degree field on glass plates 356 mm (14 inches) square. The color photographs are made by photographing each scene three times, with combinations of plates and filters designed to record blue, green or red light, chosen so that all the colors in visible light are recorded. Before exposure, the plates are specially pre-treated (hypersensitized) to increase their sensitivity to the feeble light from distant stars and galaxies. This treatment usually consists of baking or soaking the plates in nitrogen gas for several hours in a moderate oven, followed by a room temperature soak in pure hydrogen. This has the effect of increasing the long-exposure speed by a large amount. Even so, exposures of 30-40 minutes are required in each of the three colors for some of the faintest objects.

The Leader in Orthoimagery The T-64 Orthophotoscope, the first instrument used in Menlo Park for the analog production of orthophotos
Orthophoto production began at the USGS Western Mapping Center (WMC) in Menlo Park, California (now called the Western Geographic Science Center), in 1965 using the T-64 Orthophotoscope, designed and built in 1964 by Russel Bean at USGS headquarters in Virginia. Several generations of this analog process were used through the early 1980s, but production was very labor intensive and done primarily in-house. Analog orthophotos were derived primarily from high-altitude, 1:80,000-scale aerial photographs and were produced in 7.5-minute units.
Throughout the 1970s, technicians at the Western Mapping Center developed numerous innovative photographic techniques to improve their methods and the quality of their products
Among the many limiting factors in the creation of high-quality analog orthophotos were problems related to equipment limitations and restrictive film properties. Throughout the 1970s, technicians at the WMC developed numerous innovative photographic techniques to improve their methods and the quality of their products. Significant examples include developing a way to use new high-contrast lithographic duplicating film to create machine-processed continuous-tone images, and developing a computer technique for reliable film exposures and processing controls. These innovations, coupled with technological developments in computerization, were a tremendous catalyst in gaining approval for an intensified orthophoto development program.

http://www.dcviews.com/tutors/tt57814.htm
Stereo photography
Photographs capture places and events, but they lack the impression of depth. Ever since Charles Wheatstone discovered the principles of stereo vision in 1838, people have been trying to take stereo photographs . Stereoscopic or 3-D images use two shots of the same scene taken from slightly different viewpoints. By looking at them in a certain way or by using stereo viewers the images are combined in our mind to produce a 3-D effect, which arises from the fact that each of our eyes has a slightly different view on the world. By taking two pictures 2.5” apart (the average distance between right and left eye of most people) we get a 3-D shot.
To view images in 3-D without a stereoscope, arrange them side by side and stare at a point between them. Slowly cross your eyes and the images should merge so a 3-D image appears in the middle. When practising this, take a break if your eyes get tired and remember that not everyone can do this technique. chkParent("tutors","tutorials");

Welcome to the HM GROUP's Photo School.
Here you will find the notions of a man who has been trying to figure all this out for nearly 30 years. The opinions expressed here are biased to say the least. This is what works for me in the images that I make. Experiment with these ideas, find what works for you, and then tell us about it, so we can all learn something new.
Introduction to Photography Photography is a series of choices that a photographer has to makenot only choices of equipment and film, but also choices in composition like subject, lighting and camera position. In this class we are going to cover basic equipment in a way that will increase the number of choices that you as a photographer have to work with in composing an image. The Basic principles of composition that underlie successful photographs are not rules to be followed slavishly. But understanding them will help you to produce the images you visualize. It matters not if you are using an old manual 35mm SLR (Single Lens Reflex), a Point and Shoot Automatic or a Digital camera, learning some of these basic principles will help you to improve your photographs. With the automatic cameras there are often ways to program the settings used here, and with the simple, feature challenged, cameras, there are often ways to fool it into doing what you will learn here. Photographic materials have complex physical and chemical structures that present special preservation challenges to the librarian and archivist. Since the birth of photography in the late 1830s, many different photographic processes and materials have been utilized, each subject to deterioration through time and with use. Although deterioration is an ongoing natural process, nevertheless much can be done to slow the rate at which it takes place in photographs. Deteriorated photographs may require specialized conservation treatment by a professional photograph conservator, often a costly, skill-demanding, and time-consuming procedure. For the majority of photographs in research collections, single-item conservation of deteriorated photographs is probably not a feasible or a cost-effective preservation solution. Instead, preventive conservation actions such as and maintenance of a good environment, promoting proper care and handling through staff and user education, and the use of good quality storage housings, will have a more lasting, positive impact on the preservation of a collection.

BASIC PHOTOGRAPHIC TECHNIQUES
Today, photography is characterized by a rapid growth in the development of technology and ideas. Each year, millions of pictures are taken and an astonishing array of new films, cameras and imaging systems enter the market. One of the great attractions of the photography field is the ease with which basic skills can be learned. Lesson 1: Photographic Composition, Center of interest, Subject placement, Simplicity, Viewpoint and camera angle, Balance.
Lesson 2: Shapes and lines.
Lesson 3: Pattern, Volume, Lighting, Texture, Tone.
Lesson 4: Contrast, Framing, Foreground, Background.
Lesson 5: Perspective.
Lesson 6: Basic lighting techniques: Outdoor and Existing ligt photography.
Lesson 7: Composition and Basic shots or sequences.
Appendix: Subject and Rule of Thirds.
PHOTOGRAPHIC COMPOSITION
Photographic composition is the pleasing arrangement of subject matter elements within the picture area. Creative photography depends foremost on the photographer's ability to see as the camera sees because a photograph does not reproduce a scene quite the way we see it. The camera sees and records only a small isolated part of the larger scene, reduces it to only two dimensions, frames it, and freezes it. It does not discriminate as we do. When we look at a scene we selectively see only the important elements and more or less ignore the rest. A camera, on the other hand, sees all the details within the field of view. This is the reason some of our pictures are often disappointing. Backgrounds may be cluttered with objects we do not remember, our subjects are smaller in the frame or less striking than we recall, or the entire scene may lack significance and life.

How Landmines Work
by Kevin Bonsor
Table of Contents Introduction to How Landmines Work Landmine Basics Anti-personnel Mines Anti-tank Mines Location and De-mining Techniques Lots More Information One of the most deadly legacies of the 20th century is the use of landmines in warfare. Anti-personnel landmines continue to have tragic, unintended consequences years after a battle and even the entire war has ended. As time passes, the location of landmines is often forgotten, even by those who planted them. These mines continue to be functional for many decades, causing further damage, injury and death. Photo courtesy U.S. Department of Defense This PMA-2 landmine was found hidden under snow and foliage in Rajlovac, Bosnia. Landmines are basically explosive devices that are designed to explode when triggered by pressure or a tripwire. These devices are typically found on or just below the surface of the ground. The purpose of mines when used by armed forces is to disable any person or vehicle that comes into contact with it by an explosion or fragments released at high speeds.

When viewing wildlife, whether it's as large as a bear or as small as a mouse, keep in mind that watching animals is both a science and an art. Science takes into account the natural history and physiology of the animal you're watching, including how the animal senses predators, what comprises its diet, and where it lives. The artistic side of wildlife watching comes from knowing how close you can get to the animal without disturbing it or causing it any harm.
Here are some basic principles of wildlife watching to follow:
Wildlife watching can be an exciting, lifelong pastime. The increasing threat to natural habitat makes it ever more important to use common sense, follow the guidelines for observing wildlife, and do what you can to ensure that the wildlife will remain wild for our future generations to see!
