Written by pros, including the latest features from Photoshop 7, the authors of Professional Photographic Techniques will reveal not only how to recreate darkroom techniques without turning out the lights, but also how to create images well beyond traditional barriers. Of course, you don't need to be a pro to benefit from the knowledge in these pages; this is the perfect handbook for anyone who cares about photos.
Fully illustrated in color throughout, the text is organized into a series of examples that provides a comprehensive guide to image manipulation on Photoshop 7 - everything from the glamour of magazine retouching, through restoration work to the nitty-gritty of color reproduction. Because the authors remember the days before Photoshop existed, they can show you how to achieve chemical-free equivalents for all the old tricks as well as plenty of new ones.
All these methods are revealed with before and after examples that you can actually follow and apply to your own work. These include coloring, restoring and aging images, removing unwanted parts of the image, depth of field changes, useful techniques for creating works of art and how best to display your work for the rest of the world to see.

A little background is in order. On Ometepe Island, the depth of the engraved lines on recorded petroglyphs varies from immeasurably shallow to around three centimeters. As an example for our discussion on how to photograph difficult situations, let's use the petroglyph R29-P1 from N-RIO-3, the one that's used as the background for the Field Notes page.
This petroglyph is found on a nearly vertical slab of basalt bedrock. The panel measures 210cm high by 300 cm wide. Another slab of basalt immediately adjacent and at a right angle to R29 contains another human figure similar to the 5 found in R29. Together they form what may be described as a family, if archaeologists were allowed to make wild and unwarranted judgments.

Media: Communication and Production (AVCE/GNVQ)
Written by Clive Bishop, Course Leader in Media Communication and Production, School of Art and Design, Newcastle College
Summary
The following case study, written in Summer 2002, has been created to demonstrate ways in which selected Internet resources could be incorporated into practical teaching and learning activities in Media: Communication and Production. Activities have been mapped to specific modules where relevant.
Photography Techniques
AVCE Media Communication and Production - Photography Techniques - Unit 19 Students undertaking AVCE Photography Techniques unit 19 have to have an understanding of the photographic industry.
They are expected to:
  • Investigate photographic techniques used by professional photographers Identify how changes in equipment and materials affect the industry Keep up to date with equipment and technology
In order to obtain a grade A their planning should reflect knowledge of the context of photography taking into account elements of the production process. They need to emulate professional practice in producing their own photographic images. With these criteria in mind a typical project could be the production of an illustrated report describing and analysing the work of two or three well-known photographers. The practical work could require them to produce a series of images emulating or developing the style of said photographers.

Surrealism and Photographic Technique
By Kevin Wilson
insomnium.co.uk
The Pinhole Camera Simplicity at its most basic. With the increasing focus within photography on technological advances in digital cameras and computers it is easy to get carried away and forget how a photographic image is created. There is no need for a lens just a light proof box with a pin hole opening that allows light to hit a sheet of film. Without technology there is unpredictability, inconsistency and contradiction. This lack of control therefore means the photographer can never be sure how the final image will look. The pinhole image has a certain mysterious dream like quality that at times can be difficult to comprehend. It tends to suggest the form of objects by viewing the world more ruthlessly than the human eye - challenging the traditional ways of seeing. Since exposures are long the pinhole stands still observing while everything around it carries on regardless, objects can become blurred, take on a different shape or can be omitted from the scene completely. The pinhole camera can be compared to allowing a tape recorder to record at the side of your bed as you sleep while played back in the morning instead of the silence you expected you hear unfamiliar sounds and voices. The pinhole camera is a method I will be using for future projects.

There are several controls on the modern camera that are vital to any photographer who is serious about making photographs rather than simply taking them. These controls are the lens focal length, the subject distance, the aperture and the shutter speed. Fig. 1 a typical camera. Coupling the use of these controls with your selection of film type, point of view, moment of exposure, lighting (either through your choice of time of day or through your use of flash or flood light) and its direction and quality as well as your control of film processing and print making gives you tremendous ability to structure and create your images, rather than simply blindly recording the reality in front of your lens. To use these controls successfully involves a certain amount of mental previsualization of the final image and this is the most important skill for a photographer to develop. Try to look at the world with a critical eye whenever you can. Try to see picture possibilities and envision how you would photograph them. By doing these visual exercises your photographic vision will sharpen rapidly.

    Ansel Adams
Photographer, conservationist; born in San Francisco. A commercial photographer for 30 years, he made visionary photos of western landscapes that were inspired by a boyhood trip to Yosemite. He won three Guggenheim grants to photograph the national parks (194458). Founding the f/64 group with Edward Weston in 1932, he developed zone exposure to get maximum tonal range from black-and-white film. He served on the Sierra Club Board (193471). biography.com

Fig. 1. Photographer unknown: subject unknown, sixth plate daguerreotype, c. 1847-50. Collection of Gregory Fried. An ambrotype is a weak negative image on glass rendered positive by the addition of a dark background. Frederick Scott Archer, an English sculptor, discovered that light-sensitive silver salts could be mixed with collodion, a sticky liquid that rapidly hardens and which had seen use as a field bandage for the British military. This mixture could then be applied to a glass plate and exposed in a camera while still wet; hence the term "wet plate process." In 1854, James Cutting of Boston took out a patent on this process, and Marcus Root coined the name "ambrotype" for it, from the Greek ambrotos (immortal). The process was cheaper and easier than the daguerreotype and contributed to the demise of that earlier process. Like the daguerreotype, an ambrotype was also produced as a unique object, although in principle, a print could be made from the negative on the glass. For an illustration of how a dark background makes the negative ambrotype plate look positive, see fig. 2.

A sound knowledge of photographic techniques is essential if success is to beachieved. Among the problems which are peculiar to this type of photography
    http://home.interlog.com/~barrow/foto_tec.htm
    Photographic Techniques
Bird photography presents one of the most challenging fields for any photographer and is not to be undertaken lightly. A sound knowledge of photographic techniques is essential if success is to be achieved. Among the problems which are peculiar to this type of photography are: small size of subject, moving unco-operative objects, uncontrollable lighting, difficult terrain and unapproachability.
It should be immediately obvious from this formidable list that high-quality bird photographs require a combination of special equipment, the right choice of film, unusual techniques and infinite patience.
A whole book could be written on this but only a few brief tips can be offered here. A good quality single-lens reflex 35mm camera with an autofocus lens of at least 300mm focal length with nothing less than f4 capability, a powerful flash and a sturdy tripod represent the minimum equipment. For locations where a tripod cannot be used, a 500mm lightweight mirror lens is an acceptable substitute. Even in bright sunlight, especially when this is directly overhead, fill flash should be used to place a catch-light in the bird's eye to make the picture come alive and bring out detail on the shadowed sections of the bird.
Colour film rated at 100 ASA is a good choice for perching or slow-moving birds, as this will permit relatively grain-free enlargements. For birds in flight, film rated at about 1000 ASA is necessary to arrest movement.
