The GREPAL unites professional archaeologists with other talented individuals (see the team ) interested in developing a new understanding of the origins of civilization, particularly through research in the Near-East and in Egypt. Goals and activities The GREPAL's objectives include furthering scientific research on the Levant's earliest civilizations. Activities are focused on the excavations, the publication of collections, archaeological training, and the diffusion of scientific findings to both professionals and to the general public. The GREPAL favors efficient and modern rescue excavations, both urban and rural, in collaboration with local institutions. Other activities include associative, public and private seminars as well as international archaeological conventions Projects in Egypt In the southern Delta, the GREPAL is engaged at Ma'adi, a major site of prehistoric Lower-Egypt, dating to some 800 years before the Giza pyramids, which has revealed Africa's earliest-known stone architecture and what may be Egypt's earliest metallurgy. Situated in the suburbs of Cairo and threatened by impending urban expansion, Ma'adi is an important part of the GREPAL rescue-excavation agenda, encouraged by the Egyptian universities of Cairo and El-Azhar. Mimas drifts along in its orbit against the azure backdrop of Saturn's northern latitudes in this true color view. The long, dark lines on the atmosphere are shadows cast by the planet's rings.
Saturn's northern hemisphere is presently relatively cloud-free, and rays of sunlight take a long path through the atmosphere. This results in sunlight being scattered at shorter (bluer) wavelengths, thus giving the northernmost latitudes their bluish appearance at visible wavelengths..

These photographic prints have been organized using the AGS Regional and Topical Classification systems. Distinct Photographic Collections
Many photographic images in the AGS Library are parts of distinct photographic collections that reflect a broad range of times, places and activities. The following list is a sample of the more prominent photographic collections in the AGS Library. A more detailed overview of the photographic resources appears in Kaleidoscope of History: Photographic Collections in the Golda Meir Library (1990), several copies of which are in the UWM Libraries' holdings.

The following summary of sources in the Vaughan Evans Library collection, and other web-based resources, will help the researcher find pictures of ships in the Australian trade. Images from the Museum's photograph and paintings collections are currently being documented and digitised so there is only limited online access to them at present. We are working hard to have this facility available in the future. Consult our ANMM Image Library database for a selection of images from the National Maritime Collection. For those interested in the gold rush period a small collection of images of clipper ships from from the Museum's collection can be found at the clipper card section of the Gold 150 on-line exhibition. Mystic Seaport also have some examples from their clipper card collection and highlights of their paintings and photo collections available on-line. What are your chances of finding an image ? With early sailing vessels you are relying on contemporary sketches or paintings so the chances of finding an image of a vessel from this period are often slim unless it was a well known.
