Signs, symptoms and indicators
Conditions that suggest it Contributing risk factors Other conditions that may be present ... Recommendations The term phlebitis refers to an inflammation of a vein, usually in the leg, frequently accompanied by blood clots that adhere to the wall of the vein. When the affected vein is close to the surface, the condition is called superficial phlebitis. This condition usually resolves on its own without further complications. However, when phlebitis occurs in a deep vein, it is called deep vein thrombosis (DVT). DVT is a life-threatening condition because a clot could dislodge from the vein and lodge in the lungs. If a swollen, painful vein does not disappear within 2 weeks, consult a physician. Symptoms of superficial phlebitis include pain, swelling, redness, and warmth around the affected vein. The vein feels hard to the touch because of the clotted blood.
Deep vein thrombosis is more difficult to diagnose. It can occur without any symptoms until the clot reaches the lungs. However, in about half of cases, there are warning symptoms including swelling, pain and warmth in the entire calf, ankle, foot, or thigh (depending on where the involved vein is located). Although these symptoms can also be caused by more

Vascular Surgery patient consent forms What are normal veins? Veins are a type of blood vessel that brings blood back from the tissues of the body to the heart. The veins in your legs, therefore, carry blood up the legs towards the heart. There are two main types of veins:
  • Superficial veins are those that you can see or feel (if your skin is dark) just under the skin.
They are more prominent when they are under pressure, which is why an armband helps doctors find the veins in your arm before they give injections or take a blood sample. The veins in your legs are also more prominent when you stand up, because they have to work harder to return blood against gravity. Deep veins are further from the skin surface. In the legs, they are within the muscle of the leg and can not be seen.
How do veins in the leg return blood against gravity?

Phlebitis is almost always accompanied by a blood clot, or thrombus, in the affected vein, a condition known as thrombophlebitis (see thrombosis ). Blood-clot formation may follow injury or be associated with infections. Thrombophlebitis of deep veins, usually in the legs or pelvis, may occur in patients recovering from childbirth, surgery, or other conditions requiring prolonged bedrest; the clotting mechanism is thought to be impaired when the legs are immobilized. Pregnancy or the use of oral contraceptives predisposes some women to thrombophlebitis. The major danger is that a clot originating in the leg vein may dislodge and travel to the lung, a condition known as pulmonary embolism (see embolus ). To avoid the risk of embolism, thrombophlebitis is usually treated with

Or, to put it another way, a hasty bit of silliness about Iain Banks written for the 1987 Novacon programme book when he was Guest of Honour. (Relentless auctioneer Rog Peyton and the Royal Angus Hotel venue were invariable parts of the Novacon ambience). Iain X. Banks is widely rumoured to be the latest pseudonym of a stunning new (well, a bit fame-soiled now) author who has taken the British literary establishment by storm. I have my own guess as to who lurks behind this impenetrable new alias. I think it's Martin Amis. This ambitious book transcends genre boundaries and fruitfully fuses the artsy-fartsy mainstream novel with creative borrowings from space opera, gothic horror, Westerns, fighting fantasy gamebooks, model railway magazines and compact discs. In its multiple plot threads we encounter scores of tortured souls, driven and compelled by a burning, insatiable need for increased royalties. The trans-sane Sknab, for example, whose hilarious idiosyncrasies involve introducing literary critics into complex mazes where random turnings lead them to nightmare fates: slow horrendous submersion in the foul wastes of pulped Badger books, or being auctioned off by Rog Peyton, a piece at a time.

Evaluation of unaccountable phlebitis with the long arm silastic catheter
AC Geiss and AC Friedman This study was initiated to identify the causal factor responsible for the development of "unaccountable phlebitis" when using the long arm silastic catheter. Use of computerized axial tomography has provided a means of analyzing veins containing indwelling silastic catheters of the upper arm. Physical data of diameters of the veins are limited to inaccuracies of the machine and must only be regarded as relative. We have been able to detect a great variability of cross-sectional vein diameter and area within any one patient. This narrowing tends to occur in the mid-upper arm region and may explain the occurrence of "unaccountable" phlebitis in this area. It appears that laminar blood flow and flotation of the catheter in the vein is inhibited in these areas of narrowing.

    What is thrombophlebitis?
What thrombophlebitis is, how to diagnose for it and symptoms to look for.
Phlebitis or thrombophlebitis in the most general of terms means (inflamation of a vein), but refers to clots that form in the vein. The most common plebitis occurs in veins close to the skins's surface, often found in the legs. We also call this spider veins. Although annoying, this type of inflamation is usually harmless and typically goes away after a few days. A more serious form of phlebitis ocurs in the deeper interior veins of the legs. This type of phlebitis is more dangerous but less common. Interior veins are larger, clots tend to be bigger as well and are more likely to break free, traveling to the lungs. Most people with Deep Phlebitis don't even know they have it and don't seek medical help until it becomes a medical emergency. Symptoms of superficial Phlebitis include: A red, visible vein in your leg. Usually the vein feels hard to the touch, warm and tender. A throbbing sensation will sometimes ocur and the skin tissue surrounding the vein may become swollen and itchy. Also there might be a burning sensation beneath the skin's surface. There is also pain and heaviness when lowering the leg. Some sufferers report leg cramps or a pulling sensation. Symptoms of deep Phlebitis incluse: An abscence of symptoms. Pain and swelling in the whole leg. Slight fever, skin ulcers and a swelling in the leg that stays indented when pressed. Because Deep Phlebitis is rare most people don't recognize it. Usually someone affected ends up in the hospital before treatment begins.

    Chapter 24. Chronic Illnesses
Phlebitis is inflammation in a vein. Thrombosis is when a blood clot forms. When both of these occur together it is called thrombophlebitis. Phlebitis is usually caused by infection, injury, or poor blood flow in a vein. It is more common in women over age 50. Signs and Symptoms
Superficial Phlebitis (SP) occurs just under the skin's surface. The affected area is swollen and feels warm and tender. At times a hard ropy vein is felt. This type seldom showers clots into the bloodstrem.
Deep-Vein Thrombosis (DVT) occurs within a muscle mass (commonly the leg). It is apt to release showers of clots (emboli) that often go to the lung (pulmonary emboli). The symptoms may resemble those of SP; the limb may swell and/or the muscle involved may ache. Often, DVT symptoms are silent and invisible. In silent DVT, the first symptoms may be from the pulmonary emboli. These include breathlessness, sudden chest pain, and/or collapse. Conditions that can lead to SP and/or DVT include:
Inactivity (from a sedentary job); a long trip, especially in a cramped space (Example: economy class section of a plane); prolonged bed rest
