It is sometimes associated with varicose veins or with a blockage by a blood clot ( thrombosis ), in which case it is more accurately described as thrombophlebitis. Phlebitis may occur as a result of the hormonal changes associated with pregnancy, or due to long-term use of contraceptive pills, or following prolonged immobility (which is why patients are mobilized as soon as possible after surgery). If a major vein is involved, nearly always in a leg, the part beyond the blockage swells and may remain engorged for weeks. It is very painful. Treatment is with anticoagulant drugs and sometimes surgery, depending on the cause.

Phlebitis And Thrombosis
Phlebitis is an inflammation of a vein. Thrombosis is the formation of a blood clot that may partially or completely block a blood vessel. A clot located in an inflamed, blood vessel is called thrombophlebitis. A clot formation in a deeper vein is called a deep vein thrombosis. Blood clots may follow injury, surgery, childbirth, or prolonged bed rest. They may also be associated with infection. Symptoms of phlebitis may include:
  • a hard and cord-like vein that is very sensitive to pressure or touch a surrounding area that is red and warm to the touch a slight fever or swelling of the extremity
The primary danger in thrombophlebitis is that the clot may move and travel to a vital organ, such as the lung, causing serious damage. If you have symptoms of thrombophlebitis or deep vein thrombosis your healthcare provider may order a doppler ultrasound examination (a test that uses sound waves to locate clots); a venogram in which dye is injected into a vein, usually in the foot. (X-rays are then taken to visualize the circulation and any blockages that may be present.) Lung scans may be ordered if there is concern that blood clots have traveled to the lungs. Thrombosis is treated with anticoagulant drugs, such as heparin or coumadin. These drugs inhibit the formation of blood clots.

Phlebitis Women Are Most at Risk T he late Richard Nixon may have been best known for the Watergate scandal, but during his presidency he also brought global attention to a disease called deep-vein thrombosis, the severe form of phlebitis, which periodically laid him low. Nixon's form of phlebitis was indeed quite serious. More often, though, phlebitis attacks a relatively small vein close to the skin. This is called superficial phlebitis, and it is much more painful than it is life-threatening. The symptoms usually include inflammation, swelling and tenderness. You can actually feel the clot, a painful, tender lump right under the skin, and the skin surrounding the clot often feels hot and looks pink or red. Treatment of this most common and benign form of the disease is surprisingly simple. Even if you don't do anything, most superficial vein clots will dissolve within about two to four weeks. In the meantime, your doctor will recommend applying cold packs and prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs to ease discomfort.

    Phlebitis
It's a pain in the legor both legs. That's how it begins, anyway. And when the pain doesn't go away, you probably want to pick up the phone and call the doctor. Well, that's exactly the right thing to do, because anyone with the warning signs of phlebitis needs to find out as soon as possible which kind of phlebitis he has. And only a doctor can tell you that. Phlebitis (the full name is thrombophlebitis ) is an inflammation or blood clot in a vein, usually in the legs. There are two kinds. Deep-vein thrombophlebitis is the risky variety. It affects the veins that are deep beneath the skin (that explains the name), and it can be fatal if a blood clot dislodges from the vein and travels to the lungs. So doctors recommend immediate action if an exam turns up any warning signs of deep-vein phlebitis. More often the problem is superficial thrombophlebitis, which means that you have some blockage in the superficial veins near the surface of the legs. Painful, yesbut not dangerous. Be ready to call the doctor again if you see any sign that it's getting worse. But in the meantime, there are many things you can do to ease the pain and reduce the worry associated with this problem.

The condition was also detailed in The Dharma Bums and other writings by Beat author Jack Kerouac, who suffered from the disease brought on by years of benzedrine and alcohol abuse. However, most people with the condition, perhaps 80 to 90 percent, are women.

    28. Superficial Thrombophlebitis - Patient UK
phlebitis means inflammation of a vein. Thrombo(sis) means a blood clot in a vein (However, thrombophlebitis is commonly just called phlebitis.)
    http://www.patient.co.uk/showdoc/23068983/
    Superficial Thrombophlebitis
Superficial thrombophlebitis is an inflammation of a 'surface' vein, usually on a leg. A small blood clot may form in the vein, but is usually not serious. The condition usually settles and goes within 2-6 weeks. Treatments can ease the pain and discomfort. Complications occur in a small number of cases.
    What is thrombophlebitis?
    • Phlebitis means inflammation of a vein.
    • Thrombo(sis) means a blood clot in a vein
A vein is a blood vessel that takes blood towards the heart. If a vein becomes inflamed, a blood clot commonly forms inside the inflamed portion. So, the term thrombophlebitis is used to mean an inflamed vein, with or without a small blood clot inside the vein. (However, thrombophlebitis is commonly just called phlebitis.) What is superficial thrombophlebitis? The superficial veins are the ones that you can often see or feel just under the skin. Most bouts of thrombophlebitis occur in a leg vein, but any superficial vein can be affected. A typical site is in a varicose vein in a leg. Varicose veins are common, particularly in pregnant women. Superficial thrombophlebitis is not usually serious, but complications sometimes occur (see below). Note: this leaflet does not deal with inflammation or thrombosis of deep veins which are larger, pass through the muscles in your arms and legs, and you cannot see or feel. People often get confused between thrombophlebitis and deep vein thrombosis, but they are quite different. A deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is more serious, and is dealt with in another leaflet.

    Phlebitis
Phlebitis is inflammation of the veins. It is most common in the legs and almost always takes place in varicose veins. The complications that can occur may be serious, so it is important to know a bit about the condition. To understand phlebitis, it is helpful to remember that arteries bring the blood from the heart into the head, arms, and legs and end in the network of small capillaries which then pass on into the veins that take the blood back to the heart and lungs. Blood flows more slowly through the veins and especially in varicose veins where they become dilated and more torturous. When added pressure is put on the veins by a lot of standing and squatting, by crossing the legs and by getting bumped, an inflammation takes place. This causes the area to become swollen, painful, red, and tender to touch. Once it begins, it can extend up and down the leg and may cause fever. At this point, it becomes urgent to be checked by the doctor and start immediate treatment. It is at this time that blood clots can develop and, if dislodged, circulate into the heart or lungs with fatal results.

    Quick Reference
Reviewed by Brian R. Robinson, MD Phlebitis, or inflammation of the veins, is caused by infection or injury. Two types of phlebitis can occur. The more common one is inflammation of the superficial or surface veins of the legs; the other type involves inflammation of the deep veins of the legs (the conditions may also occur in the arm). Both result in an irritated, itchy, painful and tender feeling in the vein and the tissues beneath it.
    Detailed Description
This condition results when blood circulation in the veins slows down or in blood that clots easily. Phlebitis can also result from vein injury in those with impaired circulation. It can develop following

He said this is sometimes seen in cancer patients, and mentioned the possibility of tumors in the pancreas or liver. Is this a liklihood, or just a possibility that needs to be ruled out? Is there something else that might be causing these problems? She has since stopped taking the estrogen, and is scheduled for an abdominal and pelvic CAT scan. We are very frightened. Dear Amy: Phlebitis (blood clots in the veins) is usually caused by one or combination of the following conditions: injury to the lining of the veins, inactivity causing blood stasis ( blood not moving through the veins) or abnormally high clotting tendency. Many physical and medical problems may lead to the development of phlebitis or deep vein thrombosis. Only in rare cases this can be seen in patients with malignancy such as colon or pancreatic cancer.
