To escape from medial voice
Is it true to say that in these tired final stages it is not possible to think? Is it certain that, after all the “afters”, philosophy is only relegated to the posthumous task of its own repetition or of its celebration, of its plunging into philology or into literature? Or should thoughts look away to the large zone of shadows and be disguised as a psycho-sociology of the present only a little bit more intelligent than normal in those subjects? Under the threat of such rhetorical questions the answer is always “yes”, with suspicious unanimity, this textbook struggles.

Introduction
This home page is your gateway to a wide variety of web resources. My thought patterns (and so also, my teaching and scholarly articles and books ) tend to be organized according to a simple set of logico-graphic structures that together constitute the " Geometry of Logic ". One of the most useful patterns is fourfold, consisting of two sets of interlocking opposites that can be "mapped" onto a simple cross . I have therefore made ample use of this map to organize many of the pages you will encounter here. Once you become familiar with this fourfold pattern, the maps should enable you to navigate more swiftly around the different areas of this web site. The "main map" for this web site , under which nearly all its contents are classified, is as follows:

Machiavelli on the Net
A Niccol² Machiavelli webliography , a map of online resources related to the Florentine thinker and statesman. The main purpose of these pages is to work as a kind of portal to online material that is in some way related to Machiavelli: his own works in both the original Italian and translated into English, and articles written about him and his ideas. The site is potentially useful to everyone interested in Machiavelli. If you do not know who the man was and want the executive summary, read my short introduction . If you would like to read his books, I have listed online libraries that offer several of them for you to read, and I have also collected links to his most important individual works . If you want to read something written about him, have a look at the list of secondary literature I also work on Machiavelli elsewhere on the web: the Machiavelli category at the Open Directory Project and the Wikipedia project. Please note that unless explicitly stated, I am not affiliated with any of the sites listed, and I am not responsible for their content. I just link to them.

Introduction to Hegel's semiology
Since real difference belongs to the extremes, this mean ( Mitte ) is but an abstract neutrality, their real possibility, the as it were theoretical element of the existence, process, and results of chemical objects. In the corporeal element water has this function of being medium; in the spiritual element, in so far as there is an analogon of such a relationship in it, we must seek this function on the side of signs in general, and more precisely ( ) in language. [ Science of Logic In the Encyclopaedia (§ 458) Hegel regrets that in general 'signs and language are introduced as an appendix in psychology, or even in logic, without any reflection on their necessity and their enchainment in the system of the activity of the understanding'. For the moment let us see here the indication or the incitation to recognise that the essential place of semiology is at the centre, not on the margin or as an appendix to Logic. In determining Being as presence (presence of the present being [ ] in the form of an object, or self-presence of the present being in the form of self-consciousness), metaphysics could only consider the

A Vegetarian Philosophy by Peter Singer Consuming Passions . Manchester, 1998, pp. 66-72 Acrobat version Issues regarding eating meat were highlighted in 1997 by the longest trial in British legal history. McDonald's Corporation and McDonald's Restaurants Limited v. Steel and Morris, better known as the "McLibel" trial, ran for 515 days and heard 180 witnesses. In suing Helen Steel and David Morris, two activists involved with the London Greenpeace organization, McDonald's put on trial the way in which its fast-food products are produced, packaged, advertised, and sold, as well as their nutritional value, the environmental impact of producing them, and the treatment of the animals whose flesh and eggs are made into that food. […] The case provided a remarkable opportunity for weighing up evidence for and against modern agribusiness methods. The leaflet "What's Wrong with McDonald's" that provoked the defamation suit had a row of McDonald's arches along the top of each page. Two of these arches bore the words "McMurder" and "McTorture." One section below was headed "In what way are McDonald's responsible for torture and murder?" The leaflet answered the question as follows:

Baruch Spinoza was born to Portuguese Jews living in exile in Holland, but his life among the Marranos there was often unsettled. Despite an early rabbinical education, he was expelled from the synagogue at Amsterdam for defending heretical opinions in 1656. While engaging privately in serious study of medieval Jewish thought, Cartesian philosophy , and the new science at Rijnburg and the Hague, Spinoza supported himself by grinding optical lenses, an occupation that probably contributed to the consumption that killed him. Private circulation of his philosophical treatises soon earned him a significant reputation throughout Europe, but Spinoza so treasured his intellectual independence that in 1673 he declined the opportunity to teach at Heidelberg, preferring to continue his endeavors alone. Spinoza's first published work was a systematic presentation of the philosophy of Descartes , to which he added his own suggestions for its improvement. The Principles of Descartes's Philosophy (1663) contain many of the characteristic elements of his later work, but Spinoza seems to have realized that a full exposition of his own philosophical views would require many years of devoted reflection. In the meantime, he turned his attention briefly to other issues of personal and social importance. The

98. Berkeley
Text of this section from Alfred Weber's 1908 opus.
http://www.class.uidaho.edu/mickelsen/texts/Weber - History/berkeley.htm
History of Philosophy
by
Alfred Weber Table of Contents Berkeley the idea of corporeal substance or matter is as remote from our conceptions and apprehensions as that of spiritual substance or spirit! Hence, all that was needed to arrive at the negation of matter or absolute spiritualism was to efface the distinction which he had drawn between primary and secondary qualities, and to call all sensible qualities, without exception, secondary. This is done by GEORGE BERKELEY, who thus enters upon a course against which Locke had advised in vain. Berkeley was born in Ireland, 1685, of English ancestors, became Bishop of Cloyne, 1734, and died at Oxford, 1753. The following are his most important works: Essay towards a New Theory of Vision, Treatise on the Principles of Human Knowledge, Three Dialogues between Hylas and Philonous, Alciphron, or the Minute Philosopher Locke recognizes, with Descartes and Hobbes, that color is nothing apart from the sensation of the person seeing it, that sound exists only for the hearing, that taste and smell are mere sensations, and do not inhere in the things themselves. But in addition to such secondary qualities, which do not inhere in the objects but in the perceiving subject, he assumes primary qualities existing without the mind and belonging to an unthinking substance: extension, figure, and motion. And that is where he is wrong. Just as color, smell, and taste exist only for the person perceiving them, so extension, form, and motion exist only in a mind that perceives them. Take away the perceiving subject, and you take away the sensible world. Existence consists in perceiving or being perceived. That which is not perceived and does not perceive does not exist. The
