New Faculty Join University at
Time of Change, Transformation
Although the unprecedented wave of hiring in the wake of the early retirement program of three years ago has slowed, the University again welcomes a significant group of new faculty this week. Chancellor John Petersen extended a warm welcome: "As chancellor and provost for university affairs, I would like to welcome you to the academic family at UConn. "New faculty are critical to the continued rebirth of scholarship at a research university," he said. "I look forward to working with each of you over the ensuing years." The new hires have been carefully selected during a tight budget year in areas that will help respond to growing undergraduate enrollment, as well as filling programmatic needs and promoting the quest for excellence, driven in some departments by a comprehensive program assessment launched several years ago. Many of the new appointments are at the assistant professor level, helping not only to stretch the resources available but also continuing to change the age profile of the faculty, said Ross MacKinnon, dean of the college of liberal arts and sciences. The college - the largest of UConn's schools and colleges and the hardest hit by the early retirement program - hired 10 new full-time faculty this year, including a couple at the regional campuses.

FAQ - Frequently Asked Questions
The following FAQ-List is composed of questions asked since we've been on the Web. As most of it is personal comm, we left out the names. We tried to answer these questions as best we could and spent many nights discussing them. We learned and grew a lot, ourselves, doing this. It's not complete yet, but we keep adding to this list... and, at least, it's a start. For those who are new to this field: You might have a hard time sorting out and understanding certain terms we are using. This is "Scientology terminology". It is defined in the "Dianetics and Scientology Technical Dictionary", which, however, belongs to the Church. You find it here If you have questions about this, just drop us a line at information@freezone.de

The conference host is the Washington Association for Learning Alternatives with the theme, Education for Everyone, emphasizes many types of alternatives to meet different learning needs and differing philosophies of education: magnet school, charter schools, homeschooling, democratic schools, virtual schools, Montessori, and more. You might want to make this a summer vacation trip with your family. Conferees will enjoy the Shilo Inn conference site on the Pacific Ocean with a variety of family activities. Ocean Shores is a 6,000 acre peninsula at the mouth of Grays Harbor, the only deep water port on the Pacific coast north of San Francisco. Ocean Shores was originally developed in 1960, and is one of Washington’s most popular resort destinations. In Ocean Shores, you’ll find 6 miles of sandy beaches which extend north of town 15 miles to Moclips. The city also features 23 miles of interconnecting lakes and canals, and 12 miles of scenic bayside. Ocean Shores is about a two hour drive from Seattle. Consider doing a session about learning alternatives at the conference. Consider doing a session at the conference by completing the

Those of us who are more fortunately situated may be able to help professionally. Introduction In the minds of many chiropractors, there is an ongoing battle in the chiropractic profession between two factions, one of which believes that the practice of chiropractic should be guided by philosophy and another which believes that science should guide the practice of chiropractic. It is my contention that a battle between philosophy and science does not and cannot exist within the chiropractic profession or any other discipline. I contend that the real battle is between the great majority of chiropractors who unknowingly allow dogmatism to guide the practice of chiropractic and the extremely rare variety of chiropractor who's practice of chiropractic is guided by philosophy and science. In this paper, I will attempt to utilize the so-called "Socratic method" to guide the presentation of information. The "Socratic method" is characterized by a demand for accurate definitions, clear thinking, and exact analysis (1,p.8-9). In Durant's commentary on Socrates, he states:

Introduction and the Use of Animals In previous classes I have asked my students to list how humans use animals. The exercise was primarily to get students thinking about animal use from a variety of viewpoints and to recognize that acceptable animal use is very diverse. The other important component of this exercise was to get students thinking about how different forms of animal use is regulated and where abuses, if any, might occur. This resulted in what I think is a fairly exhaustive listing of different ways in which humans use animals Classification of Animal Use by the Scientific Community

        Lifelong Education and Development
This area aims to investigate the mechanisms of lifelong education and human development, by examining lifestyles, cultures, and work, as well as by focusing on the developmental contexts of school, home, community, and workplace. Together with historical and empirical analyses of the cultural and social factors inherent in human development and education, the program studies the social and national functions and structures within education from the standpoint of securing rights to the lifelong education of the individual.
        History of Education
This sub-area focuses on the history of education in Japan, East Asian countries, and the West. One distinguishing feature of this course is that it actively engages in fieldwork at the national and local community levels, instilling mastery of skills related to collecting research materials, and conducting historical research. Furthermore, comparisons between countries are made from the perspective of the philosophy and history of modern educational systems, and educational cultural exchange.
