MU Confers Honorary Doctorate Degrees
The honorary degree recipients with MU executives. On 4 July at the annual Mahidol University (MU) Graduation Ceremony, MU conferred Honorary Doctorate degrees on eight distinguished individuals in recognition of their outstanding contributions in a variety of medical science and public service fields. The Conferees were graciously bestowed their degrees at the Ceremony by H.R.H. Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn. Each of the recipients was undoubtedly deserving of this honor. His Excellency Mr. Ryutaro Hashimoto (seated in photo, 4th from right) has a long and distinguished career as a government official in his native country of Japan, where he has served in numerous prominent positions, most notably as Prime Minister. Under his leadership, he was responsible for the development of what has become known as the Hashimoto Initiative, a global parasite control program. One successful outcome was the establishment of the Asian Center of International Parasite Control at MU's Faculty of Tropical Medicine, which has had a strong impact on promoting parasite control programs in the Greater Mekong Sub-region countries. His Excellency Mr. Hashimoto was conferred a degree of Doctor of Philosophy in Clinical Tropical Medicine

Vegetarianism (Cont.)
Online Resources Texts: Vegetarian Cookbooks Used Books: Vegetarian Cookbooks Know of a Resource?
Becoming Vegetarian : The Complete Guide to Adopting a Healthy Vegetarian Diet by Vesanto Melina, Brenda Davis, Victoria Harrison Becoming Vegetarian is a comprehensive and up-to-the minute guide to achieving a healthful vegetarian lifestyle. Written by three highly qualified dietitians, all of the key questions which arise for those who are beginning a dietary shift away from animal products are addressed, as well as those questions long term vegetarians have who want to ensure that their dietary pattern is nutritionally adequate. "There are many reasons to become vegetarian, including personal health, costs to the environment and the treatment of animals. Whatever your philosophical bent, this book provides the nuts-and-bolts information needed to maintain a healthy diet. As an athlete, I found it especially helpful to understand the function of fat and the different kinds of fats. Although this book helped ease my conversion into a lacto/ovo vegetarian a year ago, and I did enjoy the section on training non-vegetarians to understand the meatless choice, I would recommend the book highly to anyone, vegetarian or not, wanting to understand human nutritional needs. Food has an enormous social subtext and is surrounded by so much myth and fable it is hard to know what to believe. This book, in its sensible and attractive way, is completely credible." A Very Short History of Computer Ethics Terrell Ward Bynum Newsletter on Philosophy and Computing The Foundation of Computer Ethics Cybernetics: or control and communication in the animal and the machine, he said the following:
Neglect, Then a Reawakening Unfortunately, this complex and important new area of applied ethics, which Wiener founded in the 1940s, remained nearly undeveloped and unexplored until the mid 1960s. By then, important social and ethical consequences of computer technology had already become manifest, and interest in computer-related ethical issues began to grow. Computer-aided bank robberies and other crimes attracted the attention of Donn Parker, who wrote books and articles on computer crime and proposed to the Association for Computing Machinery that they adopt a code of ethics for their members. The ACM appointed Parker to head a committee to create such a code, which was adopted by that professional organization in 1973. (The ACM Code was revised in the early 1980s and again in the early 1990s.)
