101. Philosophy Of Robot Minds
That said, I want to avoid some issues in the philosophy of mind, May 10. Getting real Putting it all together in a philosophy of mind for robots.

Seminar: Toward a Philosophy of Robot Minds
Spring Semester, 2002
Paul Cohen

Department of Computer Science
University of Massachusetts, Amherst
The goal of the seminar is to examine philosophical and empirical arguments relating to the claim that robots can have minds, that these minds can be in meaningful (contentful, intentional) states and that meanings can have causal effects on robot behavior. The first part of the seminar will be devoted to understanding the previous sentence. Then we will try to develop a philosophy of robot minds. If this turns out to be very different from the philosophy of human minds (because, say, robot minds are nothing like human minds, as Searle would have it) then I shall be disappointed: I want to believe that robots can have minds like ours, and I will try to make that case, but if I cannot, it will still be instructive to try out philosophical arguments about our minds on real or imagined robot minds.
That said, I want to avoid some issues in the philosophy of mind, particularly consciousness. I have no idea how to build a conscious robot and I don't think anyone else does, either, but we can imagine and have started to build robots with contentful mental representations. Perhaps we are looking for our keys under the lamppost because we cannot see anywhere else, and perhaps anything we say about robot intentionality is useless unless we figure out robot consciousness, but I think we clearly need a philosophy of robot minds and we should look for it where we are already having some success.

"I was born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1970. In 1988 I became a sound and lighting engineeroperating sound systems and light-shows for bands and other productions. Through my contacts in that industry, I changed profession and became a nightclub DJ in 1990. During the daylight hours, I ran a computer graphics business, which involved the production of animated cartoon commercials for a local network of video screens. The business also gave me the opportunity to produce a 30 minute long animated Nursery Rhyme video (for children under 5 years old), which was marketed throughout New Zealand and Australia by the Hughes Leisure Group.

    Description
About the Author "In her systematic examination of Stoic and Epicurean theories of mind, Julia Annas seeks to demonstrate the innovative nature of their views. According to Annas' exactingly lucid book, the Stoic and Epicurean accounts are philosophically worthy and, properly construed, the first genuine theories of mind. . . . Annas carefully and sympathetically attends to the arguments that the Stoics and Epicureans construct, while indicating their defects. As a result, we gain a sense of the enormous attraction of their reasoned, philosophical positions. . . . A model of philosophical scholarship about Hellenistic antiquity."Glenn Lesses, Canadian Philosophical Review "Usually, such a work becomes at some point too scholarly to be read by . . . amateurs. This is not the case here. It's an admirable accomplishment."David K. Glidden, University of California Riverside
