I am pleased to announce that my new book Philosophy of Mind: A Short Introduction has been released this month in the UK, and will be released in the US in September. Here is the back cover text, with endorsements and a description of the book. Further information, including the table of contents, is available at the book's webpage Philosophy of Mind: A Short Introduction "A splendid, highly accessible and lucid introduction. The arguments are engaging and provide a refreshing challenge to some of the conventional assumptions in the field." Charles Taliaferro, Professor of Philosophy, St Olaf College, Minnesota "An excellent way for students to be introduced to the topic." William Hasker, Professor of Philosophy, Huntington College, Indiana "Tightly written and admirably clear... Feser covers just the right topics, and does so judiciously and fairly... a refreshing, provocative, and important addition to the introductory books in philosophy of mind. It should appear on every reading list." David Oderberg, Professor of Philosophy, University of Reading, UK

Philosophy of Mind
(December 12): The final papers are due on Friday the 15th of December at 5pm in my mailbox, 503 Main Building; here are the topics . The final exam is on Monday the 18th of December at 10am, in 628 Shimkin Hall. The handout summarising the second half of the course that was given out in class on the 11th is available here . Thanks to everyone who participated in the course!
Course Description
In this course we'll be thinking about immaterial spirits, futuristic computers and robots, fake computers with little people inside, Martians who behave like us but have an internal structure very different from ours, brains in vats, 'swampmen' who are formed by random aggregation of molecules.... We will ask whether these strange characters have thoughts and feelings, and whether, if so, they are like us in what they think and feel. We will consider how we might know the answers to these questions, and whether they even have right answers. The point is not to consider bizarre cases just for the sake of it, but to see what light we can shed on our own nature as beings with mental lives.

What is the mind?
Does the word mind refer simply to a collection of particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth, or does it refer to some entity over and above those particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth? If mind refers to an entity, is it composed of the same kind of substance as physical objects, or of some other substance? This article does not propose to answer these questions, but to outline what other questions any answer might involve. Other questions could be asked regarding the mind ; we might raise the mind-body problem . If we suppose that the mind is some sort of mental substance , we might ask: Is there some way to explain mental substance in terms of physical substance, or not?

What is the mind?
Is the mind nothing more than a series of particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth, or is it something over and above those particular thoughts, feelings, and so forth? When we ask that, we are simply asking what the relation is between the mind and mental events. In other words, we could simply restate the question in terms of mental events, like this: Is the mind nothing more than a series of mental events, or is it something over and above the mental events that we say occur "in" it? This article does not try to answer this question.

The philosophy of mind in 20th century analytic philosophy includes the traditional philosophy of mind A Guide and Anthology. Oxford Oxford UP.
    http://www.williams.edu/philosophy/fourth_layer/faculty_pages/jcruz/courses/lang
Philosophy 202, Spring 2005 J. Hernandez Cruz , Assistant Professor of Philosophy Language and mind have been two of the premier research areas of 20th century philosophy. Each has been studied independently of the other, with the philosophy of language dominating the first half of the century and the philosophy of mind surging in the second half. The philosophy of language does not study particular human languages. Rather, it focuses on more abstract questions of language itself, including how sentences mean what they do, how names refer to individuals or natural kinds, how we can talk about non-existent things, and whether (and how) two sentences can mean the same thing. The philosophy of mind in 20th century analytic philosophy includes the traditional challenges of the mind/body problem, but also aims at assessing the prospects of particular sciences of the mind such as scientific psychology and neuroscience.
Philosophies of language and mind have also enjoyed a fruitful liaison, as much of the technical apparatus of the philosophy of language has been used to illuminate the mind. The other side of this coin is that language is fairly obviously something that minds achieve, and some prominent theories of linguistic meaning have emphasized psychological elements of language use.
In this course we will pursue an introduction to these two topics. Our encounters with both will, out of necessity, be preliminary. The course is intended to prepare students for more advanced research on either language or mind, or in the areas of philosophy (such as epistemology, metaphysics, and parts of ethics) that draw on these fields.
