Borges: Influence and References
By Manu El
manu@samerica.com

In the 1998 Idle Mist film, the dream world and the "phenomenal" world of the dreamer converge, revealing "the secret drama" of existence, questioning the audience's perception of reality, as one of the "diverse intonations of a few metaphors," the history of this metaphors which constitute, according to Borges, universal history. This metaphor, of all waking being a dream, Useche intuited and developed on his early Vana Espuma work and later rediscovered in Shakespeare, The One Thousand and One Nights and all his other aforementioned favorites. Borges also found it in the Moslem Koran, the Jewish Genesis, the Cabalist Sepher Yetzirah
Like in Shakespeare's Tempest , and "The Circular Ruins" by Borges, the characters of Idle Mist find they are "of the stuff that dreams are made of" and true to the name of Useche's production company: Paradox Arts, the work is both circular and open-ended. It also attests to the reversibility of the creative process but not as much as his subsequent feature film Waking Shadows in which an echo of Jung's theory of the unconscious and archetypes seems to represent the true driving force behind our actions and perceptions in the material world.

Ibn Khaldun and Our Age
A slightly edited version of the following essay appeared in issue 20 of The Scorpion Political thinkers engage our attention by their presentation of the particular features of their own time and place as well as the permanent qualities of man in society. We can read Aristotle and Hobbes for general lessons, or for the politics of the Greek city-state and of European society after the wars of religion. His work reflects a mind attracted to practical politics, to scholarship, and to mysticism. After failing in efforts to promote the public good, he turned to scholarship in an attempt to understand the past and explain the necessity that seemed to govern events. As an intense participant in the affairs of a great civilization irreversibly in decline, he was acutely aware of what was and what should be, and neither confused the two nor attempted to encompass one in the other. If there are no strong overarching loyalties, mixing of populations causes men to lose the social cohesion required for the self-rule of a free society and to withdraw into small groups in which they can maintain a coherent and predictable way of life. Common loyalties firm enough to create the civic order of Western Europe needed time and stability to evolve. It took 40 kings to make France, and no less time to grow what Burke once called the British oak; in the parts of Europe subject to invasion from Asia or North Africa nothing similar arose.

Project Theophrastus
  • The Electronic Theophrastus Project The goal of Project Theophrastus is to develop an electronic resource based on the 1992 edition of the Fragments of Theophrastus, which was edited by an international team of scholars including William Fortenbaugh, Pamela Huby, Robert Sharples and Dimitri Gutas. This project is produced under the guidance of Professor Fortenbaugh of the Department of Classics, Rutgers University. Started in 1996, it was originally developed by Julia Lougovaya, Peter Parisi, and Wendell Piez, at CETH, with the technical assistance of Rick Anderson. It is currently pursued by Julia Logovaya.
    The Theophrastus Material
The Greek philosopher and polymath Theophrastus (ca. 371 - 287 B.C.E.) was a prolific scholar whose works had considerable influence in his own time and the centuries succeeding. A student of Plato and associate of Aristotle, Theophrastus became the second head of the Peripatetic School in Athens, and a central figure in Hellenistic intellectual culture: his authority spanned logic and metaphysics, physical and natural science, ethics, psychology, politics and rhetoric. With the exception, however, of a series of psychological profiles known as the Characters , two treatises on botany, and a number of smaller scientific writings, Theophrastus's work is attested only in fragmentary form, in quotes, paraphrases and references by a wide range of other authors.

Christian Wolff THE PHILOSOPHY OF RATIONALISM The prejudice shared by Rationalism and Empiricism is that man does not know things directly but grasps only their impressions (phenomena). Rationalism is concerned with the impressions made on the intellect, Empiricism with those on the senses. Hence the question arises: Can the knowing subject be certain of the existence of known objects? If so, to what extent can he be certain? Both Rationalism and Empiricism needed a new method; the former adopted mathematical deduction, the latter scientific induction.

The I Ching, the Book of Changes, represents all there was, all there is, all there will be. The book also represents all there could have been, all that is not, all that could be. The book came out of the minds of our species and as such reflects the species mind. The success of the book is due to it capturing the expression of opposition, complementarity, the reactive, the proactive, the particular, and the general. The book serves as a map, and so a metaphor, that allows the species to interpret reality with a good degree of precision without getting too entangled in the details. The book thus serves as a guide for some, as a control for others.

134. Modern Philosophy
Descartes is justly regarded as the Father of modern philosophy. modern philosophy has been driven by questions about knowledge.
http://www.friesian.com/hist-2.htm
The Beginning of Modern Science
One thing that happened during the Renaissance that was of great importance for the later character of modern philosophy was the birth of modern science. Even as in the Middle Ages philosophy was often thought of as the "handmaiden of theology," modern philosophers have often thought of their discipline as little more than the "handmaiden of science." Even for those who haven't thought that, the shadow of science, its spectacular success and its influence on modern life and history, have been hard to ignore. For a long time, philosophers as diverse as David Hume Karl Marx , and Edmund Husserl have seen the value of their in work in the claim that they were making philosophy "scientific." Those claims should have ended with Immanuel Kant (1724-1804), who for the first time clearly provided a distinction between the issues that science could deal with and those that it couldn't, but since Kant's theory could not be demonstrated the same way as a scientific theory, the spell of science, even if it is only through pseudo-science, continues. The word "science" itself is simply the Latin word for knowledge: scientia . Until the 1840's what we now call science was "natural philosophy," so that even Isaac Newton's great book on motion and gravity, published in 1687, was

Freedom and Democracy
John Hospers
The very word "democracy" in our time has become a term of commendation. Every system of government wants to call itself a democracy, even if it is actually a dictatorship. "Democracy" has become such a term of approval that to call something democracy is implicitly to commend it. Even communist nations whose governments are tyrannical to the core pride themselves on being "people's democracies." In non-communist nations such as the United States this tendency is equally evident: we hear of wars to defend democracy, and the need to "preserve the tradition of liberal democracy." Whether one is talking about the right to vote or the "need to share our resources," people will use the word "democracy" to praise whatever political system or ideal they favor. The harshest criticism of any procedure is that it is "anti-democratic." And yet it was not always so: even a hundred years ago in this country, to call a nation a democracy could be construed simply as a description, not an evaluation sometimes even as a criticism. Almost nowhere is this any longer true.
Majority Rule
Democracy is rule by the majority. In a direct democracy, such as that of ancient Athens, or like the New England town meetings, every citizen can vote on every measure. In an indirect, or representative, democracy, each citizen can vote to elect representatives (Congress, Parliament) who then do the voting, and it is the majority of the representatives rather than the majority of the citizens themselves who determine the outcome.
