Developing a Philippine Philosophy
The purpose of this page is to attempt to outline some common thoughts and ideas in the belief and wisdom systems of the pre-colonial Filipinos and the modern Filipino tribal beliefs. The more commonly recurring themes will be organized in an effort to develop a Pan-Philippine philosophy. Such a philosophy should represent ideas and thoughts widely attested enough to classify as geographically endemic to the island nation. Only very obvious foreign borrowings will be neglected here, no inquiry will be made into the proposed theories of borrowing so commonly found in Western scholarship. This certainly is not the first attempt at piecing together a Filipino philosophical system, although most previous attempts have concentrated on Filipino Christian rather than indigenous culture. In some cases, Filipino thinkers like Isabelo De Los Reyes have tried to blend in indigenous elements into local Christian thought.
Borrowed Thinking
The problem in the Philippines lies in its thought processes being borrowed mostly from the outside. In ordinary social dealings, the Filipino traits still survive and predominate, but Filipinos have been unable to develop a modern philosophy that would enable them to adapt foreign thought to the indigenous mind and attitude. Serafin Talisayon has created a diagram showing some prominent Filipino social values found among mainstream modern Filipinos:

God is one, that is, only one substance can be granted in the universe. Whatsoever is, is in God, and without God nothing can be, or be conceived.
Spinoza was born in Amsterdam in 1632, into a family of Jewish emigrants fleeing persecution in Portugal. He was trained in Talmudic scholarship, but his views soon took unconventional directions which the Jewish community - fearing renewed persecution on charges of atheism - tried to discourage. Spinoza was offered 1000 florins to keep quiet about his views, but refused. At the age of 24, he was summoned before a rabbinical court, and solemnly excommunicated. Spinoza refused all rewards and honours, and gave away to his sister his share of his father's inheritance - keeping only a bedstead for himself. He earned his living as a humble lens-grinder. He died, in February 1677, of consumption, probably aggravated by fine glass dust inhaled at his workbench. His philosophy is summarized in the Ethics , a very abstract work, which openly expresses none of the love of nature that might be expected from someone who identified God with nature. And Spinoza's starting point is not nature or the cosmos, but a purely theoretical definition of God. The work then proceeds to prove its conclusions by a method modelled on geometry, through rigorous definitions, axioms, propositions and corollaries. No doubt in this way Spinoza hoped to build his philosophy on the solidest rock, but the method, as well as some of the arguments and definitions, are often unconvincing.

The Gottfried Leibniz Project
THE PROJECT: To show there is no logical difficulty with maintaining God's omnipotence and the presence of evil. This man put the "fried" in "Gottfried." Endeavoring to solve the Problem of Evil, Leibniz argues that this really is the best of all possible worlds. To make this work, Leibniz invents Monads. For class, we read from the Theodicy and the Monadology Theodicy: Leibniz wants to show that there's no contradicition between God being all good and all powerful, yet evil and suffering exist in the world. Admirably, he does not take the "Free Will Defense" (God chooses to not be in control of everything). Instead, he argues that it's really for the best that evil and suffering exist, even though it may not appear that way to us. Rather than set forth a thesis, Leibniz takes objections to a sovereign, good God and an evil world and answers them. The keystone of his argument is that this world, complete with evil and suffering, is the best world. There are a number of other, interesting side notes (like the fact that "good" animals may outweigh the evil of "evil" humans), but the best of all possible worlds argument is the Mac Daddy. The argument goes that evil and suffering in the world actually can produce greater good that we may not be able to perceive. A world with no evil and suffering would not be as adequate as this one. Central to the debate on this question is: Is Leibniz suggesting that God was forced to make the world this way in order for it to be "the best," or does the fact that God chose to make this world this way automatically make it "the best" regardless of how we might evaluate it with our limited understanding?

Pythagoreanism
Eric Steinhart
Pythagoreanism Home Table of Contents Chapter Abstracts A pythagorean says all that exists are collections and their properties. All particulars are collections and all universals are properties of collections. A collection is intuitively definable as any number of objects grouped together to make one object. A collection is more precisely definable as the object of some set or class theory. I argue that collections and their properties are the ultimate theoretical entities of deep science. I argue that the following things are collections: numbers; points, lines, planes, regions, space-times; vectors, matrices, all physical fields; all material events, things, and processes; our actual universe, all physically possible universes; all set-theoretic worlds; the whole of reality. Reality is a maximally inclusive collection. It contains all possible models of all consistent theories. It is that than which no more complex is possible. I make these arguments in a book, just finished, entitled Pythagoreanism.

92. Leo Strauss's Platonism
Essay by Neil Robertson. Argues that Strauss anachronistically ascribed modern concerns to premodern philosophy.
http://www.mun.ca/animus/1999vol4/roberts4.htm
LEO STRAUSS'S PLATONISM
Neil Robertson ngrobert@is.dal.ca For Platonists are not concerned with the historical (accidental) truth, since they are exclusively interested in the philosophic (essential) truth. Only because public speech demands a mixture of seriousness and playfulness, can a true Platonist present the serious teaching, the philosophic teaching, in a historical, and hence playful, garb. Leo Strauss
"Farabi's Plato" [1] Leo Strauss, the historian of political philosophy, is especially noted for seeking to revive the quarrel between the ancients and the moderns. In a number of books Strauss calls for a return to and a renewal of ancient political philosophy, and in particular that of Plato. Yet Strauss's actual interpretations of Platonic texts have often been regarded by non-Straussians as idiosyncratic, perverse or simply bizarre. Strauss, for his part, argues that he has recovered the original Plato lost sight of by the tradition of Neo-Platonic and Christian interpretation. In this paper I wish, on the one hand, to agree with critics of Strauss that his is not the original Plato, but, on the other hand, to try to discern the logic underlying Strauss's reading of Plato. My paper concludes by suggesting that Strauss's discussion of Plato can be seen to be of the greatest interest if it is read less as providing an interpretation of the original Plato and more as a contribution to contemporary thought . What underlies Strauss's interpretation of Plato is a one-sided, but nonetheless significant, consideration of the contemporary.
