    Response 1: Herbert Butterfield
Response 2: Philosophy and Economic History (Senior Research Project, John Martella, '92)
Mr. Martella traces attitudes towards money and wealth back to Plato, Aristotle, early Christianity, and Aquinas, and then looks closely at the overturning of these attitudes in mercantilism and capitalism (as philosophically grounded by Adam Smith and John Locke).
This document will help us better understand the complex interactions between economic structures, on the one hand, and religious and philosophical frameworks on the other. Science and the Scientific Method (Jones, ch. 3)

Islamic philosophy, modern
There are a number of major trends in modern Islamic philosophy. First, there is the challenge of the West to traditional Islamic philosophical and cultural principles and the desire to establish a form of thought which is distinctive. From the mid-nineteenth century onwards, Islamic philosophers have attempted to redefine Islamic philosophy; some, such as Hasan Hanafi and Ali Mazrui, have sought to give modern Islamic philosophy a global significance and provide an agenda for world unity. Second, there is a continuing tradition of interest in illuminationist and mystical thought, especially in Iran where the influence of Mulla Sadra and al-Suhrawardi has remained strong. The influence of the latter can be seen in the works of Henry Corbin and Seyyed Hossein Nasr; Mulla Sadra has exercised an influence over figures such as Mahdi Ha'iri Yazdi and the members of Qom School, notably Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini. The philosopher Abdul Soroush has introduced a number of concepts from Western philosophy into Iran. Finally, there have been many thinkers who have adapted and employed philosophical ideas which are originally non-Islamic as part of the normal philosophical process of seeking to understand conceptual problems. This is a particularly active area, with a number of philosophers from many parts of the Islamic world investigating the relevance to Islam of concepts such as Hegelianism and existentialism. At the same time, mystical philosophy continues to exercise an important influence. Modern Islamic philosophy is thus quite diverse, employing a wide variety of techniques and approaches to its subject.

Accident: A property or attribute that a (type of) thing or substance can either have or lack while still remaining the same (type of) thing or substance. For instance, I can either be sitting or standing shod or unshod , and still be me (i.e., one and the same human being). Contrast: essence Affirmative Action: A policy seeking to compensate victims of previous racial and sexual discrimination, to remedy lingering effects of such discrimination, or to combat ongoing institutionalized and unintentional discriminatory practices by providing reverse preferences favoring members of classes previously disadvantaged. Actual : What really is the case, as opposed to what's possible (could be the case) and to what's necessary (must be the case); all of which are opposed to what's impossible (can't be the case). Concerning the latter "opposition": the categories possible and impossible are jointly exhaustive (everything is either one or the other). Concerning the former "opposition": necessity actuality , and possibility are not mutually exclusive: everything necessary is also actual (what must be the case is the case) and everything actual is possible (whatever is is possible ). Philosophy Graduate Schools
Friendly to Continental Philosophy Last Updated: September 2, 2005
Philosophy Department Earlham College Graduate Programs in Continental Philosophy." let me know "Continental philosophy" means the serious, non-analytic study of the history of philosophy. I do not believe that continental philosophy is best studied in analytic departments. The following list includes the exciting departments in the US, which offer compelling and thought-provoking philosophy. I do not list non-philosophy departments or programs, because, if I were to do that, the list would be much more difficult to maintain and I do not have the knowledge to maintain such a list. So I am restricting myself to philosophy departments. The schools are in alphabetical order. This is not a ranking. Of course these schools are not equal in quality or in friendliness to Continental philosophy. I provide more information about some graduate programs (a very brief description and the list of the faculty). I only list those faculty members who concentrate on some aspect of continental philosophy. I do not list the other members of such departments, you can find them by visiting their webpages. Hopefully, there will be soon some information for all departments. Any input in this effort is appreciated. Yet, it is becoming increasingly difficult to keep this page current, so please be patient with the suggested updates. If you are looking for a Continental graduate program, you need to get current information on these schools (from their catalogues, from their web sites, or from their current students) and make your decision in that light. This list provides these links in order to make that job a little easier.

Time Travel and Modern Physics
Time travel has been a staple of science fiction. With the advent of general relativity it has been entertained by serious physicists. But, especially in the philosophy literature, there have been arguments that time travel is inherently paradoxical. The most famous paradox is the grandfather paradox: you travel back in time and kill your grandfather, thereby preventing your own existence. To avoid inconsistency some circumstance will have to occur which makes you fail in this attempt to kill your grandfather. Doesn't this require some implausible constraint on otherwise unrelated circumstances? We examine such worries in the context of modern physics.

Welcome to New Ideas in Philosophy The articles on this website explore the ways that consciousness makes sense of reality. The philosophy ranges over psychology, science and metaphysics. A wide view of life is embraced, and this panorama enables me to produce stimulating ideas. 20th century Anglo-American philosophy became limited to analytical logic because psychology was removed from the fields of interest. A living, dynamic philosophy always needs psychological input as the means of validating the flights of ideas. I tie my philosophical interests to dynamic psychology and create original ideas, as well as updating old ones. What is the value of philosophy ? What is the value of psychology to philosophy ? To answer this question, I open this website with a link to an article that illustrates the inter-twining of these two disciplines. Many more articles can be accessed from the list of additional articles. Psychology and Philosophy how these disciplines interact. 56. Bohm, Bell, And Boom! Quantum Mechanics And The End Of Modern Dualism
From History and philosophy of Science, Fall, 1997. By Dr. Ess.
http://www.drury.edu/faculty/ess/philsci/bell.html
Notes on David Peat, Einstein's Moon: Bell's Theorem and the Curious Quest for Quantum Reality History and Philosophy of Science - Fall, 1997 - Dr. Ess Outline: "Bohm, Bell - and Boom! The End of Modern Dualism" The End of Cartesian Dualism: Physics (re)discovers Philosophy over against Cartesian and especially 19th ct. positivist dualisms which separate physics and philosophy - the emergence of quantum mechanics forces physicists to be become philosophers again. Indeed, the logic of complementarity which q.m. requires ripples into a larger (re)turn to complementary relationships between physics, philosophy, and religion.
(In other terms: Cartesian dualism defines both 19th ct. positivism and fundamentalism as "mirror images" of one another: each agree that only one mode of knowing can be true - and the alternative mode(s) must be false: Positivism Fundamentalism ("calculative") reason (= natural science)
"religion" "religion"
reason/science The end of Cartesian dualism thus undermines the dualistic epistemologies of both positivism and fundamentalism.)
