Background and Aims
The history of philosophy of mind has been a central interest of several Finnish scholars working in systematic philosophy, history of ancient Greek philosophy, medieval Arabic philosophy, medieval Latin thought, Renaissance studies, intellectual history as well as the philosophy of the Early Modern Age. In 2001, these scholars have formed an interdisciplinary research group, "The History of Mind Research Unit". The Academy of Finland elected the group as one of the Centres of Excellence in Research for the six-year period 2002-2007. The group is based at the Universities of Helsinki and Jyväskylä , which also partake in its funding. The group includes some 20 scholars and post-graduate students. The focus of the group is the history of the philosophy of mind and is thus associated with one of the main branches of contemporary philosophy. The subtitle of the project is "Cognition, self-consciousness and the passions of the soul. Philosophy of mind from Plato to Kant". The scope has thus been specified by three interrelated themes:

Faculty and Students
The Department of Philosophy and Humanities consists of five full-time philosophers, two full-time classicists, and a specialist in humanities. All have Ph.D.'s in their discipline. In addition, various members of the department presently hold degrees in law, theology, music, and business. Areas of specialization range across philosophy and classics, and represent a variety of methodological approaches. The department is large enough to offer a full range of courses and small enough that every major can receive individual attention. The approach of the department is interdisciplinary in important ways. It emphasizes history as well as contemporary issues, and the faculty participate in a number of interdisciplinary programs including the Honors College, the Graduate Humanities Program and the Women's Studies Program.
Students in the department are diverse in their ages and interests. There are a number of older students who have returned to school, as well as recent high school graduates. Philosophy students tend to congregate in the department and develop camaraderie over the years. Informal arguments and discussions are vigorous without being rancorous.

AREAS OF INTEREST: Wittgenstein, Ancient Philosophy (with emphasis on Plato's metaphysics and psychology), Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Mind, Ancient Greek Language for Philosophers
Ph.D. thesis title: Wittgenstein, the Self and Religious Life
The dissertation examines Wittegenstein's critique of Cartesian dualism along with analysing central themes in philosophy of religion and philosophy of mind. Its main target is to show that dualism is not only an untenable position in philosophy of mind; but also that, contrary to what is traditionally accepted, it is unsuitable or even destructive to fundamental religious claims (e.g. self-awareness, unique moral status, spirituality, eternal life). Within the framework of the thesis there are also specific discussions of the way the Medieval philosophers Augustine, Anselm of Canterbury and Thomas Aquinas conceive the soul and mind.
Among the courses she has taught on the undergraduate and graduate level: Introduction to Philosophy, Ancient Philosophy, Medieval Philosophy, Advanced History of Philosophy, Philosophy of Mind, Wittgenstein, Plato: Phaedo, Plato: Symposium. Also Modern Greek, Ancient Greek, and Latin at the department of Western Languages and Literatures.
Some of her publications are:
"Science and Ritual: the Limits of Scientific Explanation and of the Cartesian Metaphysics of the Self" (in Greek)

PAGES FROM THE HISTORY OF THE INDIAN SUB-CONTINENT The Aryan Invasion Controversy Ever since the theory of the Aryan invasion of India was first propounded, the theory has remained a subject of intense debate and controversy. This essay examines some of the arguments both for and against the theory and concludes that while an invasion may have taken place, the impact and the significance of such an invasion on Indian civilization should not be exaggerated. Instead, this opinion argues that Indian civilization whether Hindu, Buddhist or Jain or any other, developed primarily from the unique (and varied) conditions of Indian geography and the human exertion that went into modifying those conditions to advance agriculture and settled civilization rather than from any particular invasion that may have occurred in a period of considerable antiquity. Plato and Aristotle
An Introduction to Medieval Philosophy
Mark Daniels introduces a whole millenium of ideas. Let us start by considering three points. First , medieval philosophy came from a period when philosophy was under attack: the proponents of religious faith felt that the claims of the philosophers concerning the superiority of reason were false and this led to medieval philosophers such as Aquinas and Averroes having to defend the purpose and the existence of philosophy from first principles. Second Guide for the Perplexed Third , and lastly, the relevance of various medieval projects to modern problems. The development of computers and the attempt to model events which happen in the world around us led to the development of a logical language capable of handling the various modal qualities describing time and possibility. This replicated the development of a similar language during the middle ages to discuss matters such as the Christian trinity, second coming of Jesus and resurrection of the dead. Knowledge of the medieval success would have greatly facilitated the modem reconstruction. Now that we have considered the possibility that the subject is one which might deserve our interest, let us move on to put it into context. The parameters of the time span of our subject have been widely debated. The widest stretches from the time of Philo of Alexandria (a Jew who lived c.50 CE) to that of Spinoza (d.1677 CE). Narrower definitions encompass the period from the Carolingian revival in c.800 CE to 1400 CE. Most would, however, include St Augustine of Hippo (c.400 CE).
