Philosophy of History
By Paul Newall
"Unlike science, then, where we can at least try to say that experiment is better than guesswork by reference to something like reality, with history we have nothing to appeal to but other accounts." Links: Discuss this article Philosophy Home Manuscripts Home Philosophy Reading Online resources: There are many sites that provide links to philosophical pages, works or references. The Stanford Encyclopedia of Philosophy is easily the most comprehensive available, with in-depth articles and links to further reading. Written by experts, it is the best to refer to when either supporting an argument/summary or looking for more information. Another possibility is the Internet Encyclopedia of Philosophy . The Meta-Encyclopedia of Philosophy is comprised of seven different dictionaries that may be used to compare definitions of important terms and hence appreciate the subtleties of philosophical concepts, while the Dictionary of the History of Ideas is an online version of this famous work.

Additional IEP articles on Aristotle are devoted to his discussions of motion metaphysics biology ethics ... poetics Life Upon the death of Philip, Alexander succeeded to the kingship and prepared for his subsequent conquests. Aristotle's work being finished, he returned to Athens, which he had not visited since the death of Plato. He found the Platonic school flourishing under Xenocrates, and Platonism the dominant philosophy of Athens. He thus set up his own school at a place called the Lyceum. When teaching at the Lyceum, Aristotle had a habit of walking about as he discoursed. It was in connection with this that his followers became known in later years as the peripatetics , meaning "to walk about." For the next thirteen years he devoted his energies to his teaching and composing his philosophical treatises. He is said to have given two kinds of lectures: the more detailed discussions in the morning for an inner circle of advanced students, and the popular discourses in the evening for the general body of lovers of knowledge. At the sudden death of Alexander in 323 BCE., the pro-Macedonian government in Athens was overthrown, and a general reaction occurred against anything Macedonian. A charge of impiety was trumped up against him. To escape prosecution he fled to Chalcis in Euboea so that (Aristotle says) "The Athenians might not have another opportunity of sinning against philosophy as they had already done in the person of Socrates." In the first year of his residence at Chalcis he complained of a stomach illness and died in 322 BCE.

The Department Welcome to the department of Philosophy History and Politics . UCC offers programs of study leading to a General and Major BA degree. The General BA program provides a broad liberal arts education by combining a concentration in at least one discipline, available in Philosophy, History and Politics, with area requirements which ensure a broad selection of courses. The History Major allows students to focus more specifically on courses in History. Each discipline in this department has its own methodology, research techniques and specific interests, but they are at the same time closely interrelated. Philosophy, History and Politics have as their foundation the exploration and understanding of human behaviour and society in the past and present. You will find, for example, that courses in Canadian or American politics will parallel and develop themes within Canadian or American history surveys. Philosophy, on the other hand, has close relations with comparative politics and European history. Keep these and the many other interconnections in mind when working out your course of studies. Our collective goal is to encourage students to develop their capacity for critical thinking. Students will be taught how to define problems, explore solutions through research and to analyze issues. In most courses your contributions and knowledge will be evaluated through classroom and seminar participation, written assignments and examinations.

Philosophy and History Combined course
The History and Philosophy (Equal) combined course is very flexible, and makes it possible for students to pursue their interests in either subject. Although the title of the course implies that the subjects are combined in equal proportions, this is not mandatory and students may, if they choose, obtain up to two-thirds of their credits in either subject.
General structure of the course
The general principle at York is that students should take modules from which they obtain 120 credits for each of their three years at York. Because of the flexibility of this combined course, students studying History and Philosophy may adopt a policy of distributing these, each year, in any of the following proportions: 80/40, 60/60, 40/80. In more detail -
First year programme (Part I)
Philosophy
The aim of the first year introductory modules in philosophy is to introduce students to major debates in philosophy, to give them some acquaintance with the work of important philosophers from the past, and, above all, to familiarise students with the discipline of writing and discussing philosophy. In each of the first two terms, students must take one Philosophy module (together with one History module). The modules currently being offered in Philosophy are:

Department of Philosophy WHAT IS PHILOSOPHY
Philosophy concerns those fundamental questions about reality, knowledge, and how we should live that fall outside the scope of the sciences. Very roughly, it can be thought of as comprising five main areas:
Metaphysics (the nature of reality): Does God exist? Does an objective world exist independently of our minds? What is the relation between the mind and the body? What is the nature of personal identity? Is free will compatible with determinism? What is the nature of causation?
Epistemology (the theory of knowledge): What is knowledge? How do I know that I am not now dreaming or hallucinating? Can we have knowledge of things we have not observed, such as an electron or the distant past? Can we have knowledge of the future?
Ethics, Political Philosophy, and Aesthetics (value theory): What is the nature of morality and justice? What are the correct principles of morality and of justice? What sorts of legal and social institutions are just? What is beauty? What makes an object a work of art?
Logic and Philosophy of Language (the study of the main tools of philosophy): What makes an argument valid? What is truth? How do linguistic terms refer to objects in the world?

III. The Course of the World's History
The first edition of The Philosophy of History (1837 - E. Gans, ed.) was based primarily on lectures presented by Hegel in the winter of 1830-31. With the exception of certain parts of the Introduction, it was based solely on the notes of those attending the lectures. The material was later reworked by Hegel's son, Charles Hegel, who included material from lectures dating to 1822 and Hegel's own manuscripts. This e-text of the Introduction was scanned and rendered into HTML by Carl Mickelsen. Permission is granted for electronic copying, distribution in print form for educational purposes and personal use. No permission is granted for commercial use of this material. Carl Mickelsen Introduction The subject of this course of Lectures is the Philosophical History of the World. And by this must be understood, not a collection of general observations respecting it, suggested by the study of its records, and proposed to be illustrated by its facts, but Universal History itself. To gain a clear idea at the outset, of the nature of our task, it seems necessary to begin with an examination of the other methods of treating History. The various methods may be ranged under three heads:

Password Quran - To All Sikh Students Sep 04, 2005 - 8:36 AM - by I reccommend the Quran to all Sikh students. Before you assume that I have converted faiths or have a hidden agenda to destroy sikhi, I would just like to explain my side. I have no need to convert, as I am not the firmest believer in organized religion, hence why I am a Sikh. There is no "conversion ritual" to enter the faith and the community of its followers. I treat "holy" books as intelligence, not divine order or necessarily divine truth. That's why I can read the Bible and Koran and just intake the amount of intelligence they hold without becoming a follower of the actual religion. I can read the SGGS and contemplate it rather than just assume its truth.
