ABOUT MYSELF
I am a 4th Degree Black Belt in Okinawan Kenpo Karate, and I hold ranks in two other styles, Goshin Jutsu Jujitsu and No Tora Ryu (AMERICAN TIGER STYLE)and I study other styles to enhance my education. Martial arts is a very important part of my life. I love teaching and sharing what I have learned with others. I teach at my dojo and also the YWCA. I love teaching and I teach eclectic(whatever works, use it). My base style is okinawan kenpo the root of where I started the study of martial arts. I feel that we can learn from all styles. I feel each art form has many things that are helpful to know. I am against all violent acts unless there is no other way out of a bad situation. I do workshops and demos at schools and for organizations to teach self defense and also to make teenagers aware of alternatives to drug abuse and gang involvement. Martial arts promotes self esteem, and better mental and physical health, balance, learning to respect yourself as well as others. You learn to never use force unless there is no other choice. These are just a few of the many benefits that the martial arts has to offer to a person studying this ancient art form...
I am presently in the martial arts magazine "Martial Arts Insider", a wonderful internationally circulated magazine, with a photo drill, article, and tribute to Prof. Wally Jay. It is an honor to be in this issue with the tribute to Professor Wally Jay as I admire him so much. My work also appears in Insights Into Martial Arts Magazine in New Zealand, with a photo drill and writings. Some of my drills and tips for martial artists are featured in Ron Sell's I Tip Book. I also write and have had things published in the past. I am currently working on several books.

The Columbia Philosophy Department is saddened by the death of our former colleague and chair, Bob Cumming, on August 25th. Professor Cumming's distinguished service in World War II was followed by prolific writing career that culminated in the publication of an acclaimed 4 volume study of European philosophy. Arthur Danto was awarded the degree of Doctor of Letters Honoris Causa at the Columbia 2004 Commencement. Ceremony. President Bollinger had these words: As a scholar, a writer, and a teacher, you have allowed us to see art through the lens of your large and generous philosophical mind. Illuminating the art of our time, you have situated its aspirations in continuity with ordinary objects and events as a logical moment in the history of art as a whole. You have provoked us with claims about the end of art, forcing us to attend to the profound link between the self-consciousness of current artistic production and the plurality of forms that it engenders, and indeed the essential plurality of our world. For your deep and liberal humanity, for your service to our university and its students as Johnsonian Professor of Philosophy, and for your remarkable joining of art and philosophy in a relationship of mutual enrichment, Columbia is delighted to honor you with the degree of Doctor of Letters, Honoris Causa.

130. Aristotle -- General Introduction [Internet Encyclopedia Of Philosophy]
edition of them gave fresh impetus to the study of Aristotle and of philosophy in general. Aristotle begins by sketching the history of philosophy.

Aristotle (384-322 BCE.): General Introduction Table of Contents (Clicking on the links below will take you to that part of this article)
Additional IEP articles on Aristotle are devoted to his discussions of motion metaphysics biology ethics ... poetics Life Upon the death of Philip, Alexander succeeded to the kingship and prepared for his subsequent conquests. Aristotle's work being finished, he returned to Athens, which he had not visited since the death of Plato. He found the Platonic school flourishing under Xenocrates, and Platonism the dominant philosophy of Athens. He thus set up his own school at a place called the Lyceum. When teaching at the Lyceum, Aristotle had a habit of walking about as he discoursed. It was in connection with this that his followers became known in later years as the peripatetics , meaning "to walk about." For the next thirteen years he devoted his energies to his teaching and composing his philosophical treatises. He is said to have given two kinds of lectures: the more detailed discussions in the morning for an inner circle of advanced students, and the popular discourses in the evening for the general body of lovers of knowledge. At the sudden death of Alexander in 323 BCE., the pro-Macedonian government in Athens was overthrown, and a general reaction occurred against anything Macedonian. A charge of impiety was trumped up against him. To escape prosecution he fled to Chalcis in Euboea so that (Aristotle says) "The Athenians might not have another opportunity of sinning against philosophy as they had already done in the person of Socrates." In the first year of his residence at Chalcis he complained of a stomach illness and died in 322 BCE.

131. Reasons For Dissenting From The Philosophy Of M. Comte By Herbert Spencer
A general consideration on the nature of laws, written by Spencer and published in 1864.
http://www.marxists.org/reference/subject/philosophy/works/en/spencer2.htm
Herbert Spencer (1864)
Laws in General
The recognition of Law being the recognition of uniformity of relations among phenomena, it follows that the order in which different groups of phenomena are reduced to law, must depend on the frequency with which the uniform relations they severally display are distinctly experienced. At any given stage of progress, those uniformities will be best known with which men's minds have been oftenest and most strongly impressed. In proportion partly to the number of times a relation has been presented to consciousness (not merely to the senses), and in proportion partly to the vividness with which the terms of the relation have been cognised, will be the degree in which the constancy of connexion is perceived. The succession in which relations are generalised being thus determined, there result certain derivative principles to which this succession must more immediately and obviously conform. First is the directness with which personal welfare is affected . While, among surrounding things, many do not appreciably influence us in any way, some produce pleasures and some pains, in various degrees; and manifestly, those things whose actions on the organism for good or evil are most decided, will

This primer provides a general framework for freeing any information covered under copyright and patent laws.
http://www.ram.org/ramblings/philosophy/fmp/copying_primer.html
A primer on the ethics of "intellectual property"
on this website and elsewhere , is copiable without restrictions. Over the last several years, especially after I wrote the Free Music Philosophy in mid-1993, I have been arguing about the so-called "rights to intellectual property" on the Internet. Generally, if you're on the same wavelength, the argument proceeds well and is even illuminating at times. But sometimes you're arguing with people who lack the fundamentals in logic or intellectual property issues and pointing out their lack of logic leads to the reverse accusation and the argument degenerates into a situation where each person accuses the other of being illogical. Sometimes, people (intentionally or otherwise) misunderstand you, because you have to make arguments you've spent years thinking about in a few posts, usually under some time constraint. This is not meant as an insult to anyone; some of it I think stems from using this medium for communication. What I have done here is provide some logical rationale for many of the statements I might make, in a question and answer format. Why is the abridgement of the [freedom of] copying, use, distribution, and modification of published information unethical?

135. Guidelines On Reading Philosophy
When you re skimming the article, try also to get a general sense of what s going on in You should expect to read a philosophy article more than once.
http://www.princeton.edu/~jimpryor/general/reading.html
Guidelines on Reading Philosophy It will be difficult for you to make sense of some of the articles we'll be reading. This is partly because they discuss abstract ideas that you're not accustomed to thinking about. They may also use technical vocabulary which is new to you. Sometimes it won't be obvious what the overall argument of the paper is supposed to be. The prose may be complicated, and you may need to pick the article apart sentence by sentence. Here are some tips to make the process easier and more effective.
Contents
Skim the Article to Find its Conclusion and Get a Sense of its Structure
A good way to begin when you're trying to read a difficult article is to first skim the article to identify what the author's main conclusion is. Pay special attention to the opening and closing paragraphs, since authors will often tell you there what they intend to be arguing for. When you do figure out what the author's main conclusion is, try to restate it in your own words. This will help you to be sure that you really understand what the author is arguing for. When you're skimming the article, try also to get a general sense of what's going on in each part of the discussion. What is the structure of the article? Sometimes authors will tell you, early in the paper, what their argument will look like. This makes your job easier.
