Preliminary note : The purpose of these pages is to give both the beginner and the more experienced reader a brief guide to the introductory literature on general philosophy, metaphysics, ontology, phenomenology, analytical philosophy, philosophical logic and the philosophy of logic.. In its initial form the pages will contain a selection of introductory readings, with brief annotations on the content (for the most important books, also the index will be included); subsequently these will be expanded to include more specific essays on selected problems. In the sections for beginners, preference will be given to those books more readily available. In other sections some books could be out of print; if your Library does not possess the volume, it may be possible to obtain it via interlibrary loan. • THE MACALESTER PHILOSOPHY
The cross country team is open to all students. We do not cut anyone from the team. Macalester College holds the philosophical belief that all students at Mac should have the opportunity to participate in athletics if they so desire. Macalester belongs to Division III of the NCAA and offers no athletic scholarships. However, a large percentage of Mac students receive financial aid. Financial aid is based upon need and academic excellence. At Macalester we believe the experience of being a college athlete is invaluable. We know the student-athletes develop their commitment, leadership and friendships through practice and competition. Academics are always first priority, and first year runners learn to balance their priorities with the help of the upper-classmen. Mac runners get stronger with each season. We focus on keeping runners healthy, getting stronger, and developing the mental skills to reach their potential. The close knit team develops a camaraderie that lasts long past college.

Download any of ten free interactive programs on philosophy including ones on ethics, art, law, politics, religion, human nature and the general history of ideas.

The Play of Mind: Software on the History of Ideas This site is for anyone interested in philosophy or the history of ideas. You can download any of fifteen interactive programs. They are divided into six types and all are free. The first three types of software require Windows 95 or above. The last three types require Windows 98 or above and the .NET Framework. The Forbears programs are basic and relatively effortless introductions to the history of ideas. You are shown what some great thinkers have said on a variety of issues under the general topic (philosophy, ethics, politics or America). You are also asked to choose those quotes you most agree with and in return the program analyzes your choices and displays a graph of your "philosophical proclivities." Download Forbears Programs The Bull Session programs are computerized meetings or clashings of mind yours included. The final product will be a dialogue where you are discussing several difficult questions with thinkers from around the world and throughout time. Because you have to actually write your responses, the four programs here (on art, religion, law and humanity) are more demanding than the Forbears programs. Download Bull Session Programs The two Tree Owls programs (one on European philosophers, the other on American) are challenging introductions to the history of ideas. You are shown some of the most pivotal and provocative ideas of some of the most important thinkers. You are also asked to indicate to what extent you agree with them, and graphs will be periodically displayed based on your responses.

C. S. Lewis once wrote that "Good philosophy must exist, if for no other reason, because bad philosophy needs to be answered." Philosophy is deep subject with a history as long as there has been recorded history. One way to approach philosophy is to treat it as a tool for raising critical questions about life's most important concepts. I believe philosophy provides an avenue to finding the truth about life's most important questions. I believe Christianity is true, and that God's nature is truth. Consequently, I believe that when people honestly seek the truth, they can find it. Apologetics can be understood as an application of philosophy to Christianity. Apologetics is the practice of giving an intellectual defense of of one's faith. More precisely, negative apologetics dispels apparent problems with Christianity, and positive apologetics provides reasons for the truth of Christianity. Often apologetics intersects with other disciplines, like history and science. Of course, there is more to Christianity than pure rationality. Christianity is more than matters of reason, but it certainly is not any less than reasonable. The great apologist G. K. Chesterton captured the reasonableness of Christianity when he wrote: "The problem with Christianity is not that it has been tried and found wanting, but that it has been found difficult, and left untried."

GE Area C2: Philosophy
C2: Educational Objectives and Criteria - Introduction Lower-division foundation courses in Area C provide a basic understanding of the traditions, values, and achievements found in literature, philosophy, and the fine and performing arts. Courses in this area foster, encourage, and improve students' ability to understand and respondcognitively and affectivelyto cultural achievements in both verbal and non-verbal forms. Foundation courses in the arts and humanities prepare students to see achievements within their broad historical and cultural context. These courses seek to improve and encourage students' ability to read with critical judgment and write with clarity, emphasizing writing as an integral part of the process of learning and discovery. They also cultivate an awareness of language and the arts as forms of expression valuable both in themselves and for developing critical awareness. By placing basic knowledge in a larger context, these courses provide a vision of why this area is an important component of general education.

97. Cognition And Xenodochy Home Page
The philosophy of simple and mobile life including a synthesis of epistemology, metaphysics, ethics, general semantics, psychology, and motivation, with an explanation of the biological basis of prejudice.
http://www.xenodochy.org
cognition and xenodochy
Cognition The action or faculty of knowing taken in its widest sense, including sensation, perception, conception, etc., as distinguished from feeling and volition. Xenodochy Hospitality to strangers, particularly the reception of foreigners; living together with other species on friendly terms; recognizing and supporting civil rights for aliens. Sentient Sovereignty
A significant detriment to the principles offered here is prejudice. If we are to be really prepared to support these principles, we must have a means to overcome prejudice. That means is knowledge of the foundations of prejudice and how to use that knowledge to overcome it. In keeping with the principle of sentient sovereignty, this is personal knowledge - knowledge one can use oneself - not knowledge one can control others with. A prerequisite for understanding these intra-organismic and inter-organismic issues is understanding the structural elements of mobile organisms in their environments - the philosophy of mobile life . The perspective for these views is informed by the study of general semantics , which commands us to consider the organism in its environment as a whole , and the philosophy of simple life (working drafts).
