THE MANSFIELD PHILOSOPHY PROGRAM
Many students transfer into our philosophy program when they take an introductory course and find out how exciting and challenging the world of ideas can be. The program is made up of courses that will teach you critical thinking and how to construct, analyze and evaluate arguments. Courses in Western and Eastern philosophies are included. With such issues as business ethics, arms control, right-to-life and other challenges that humanity has never faced before, philosophy has become increasingly important.
The hallmark of this program is its flexibilitythe department specifies only 33 credits in philosophy which means you can combine this major with dozens of other emphases or concentrations or another major. Some careers: Philosophy is good preparation for graduate school in many specialties, including philosophy, medicine and law. Many students who enter medicine or law school or MBA programs, earn their first degree in philosophy. A variety of businesses and industries, including the banking industry, are looking for graduates with well-rounded liberal arts backgrounds that a program such as philosophy gives you.

General Aims To give students a solid, scholarly grounding in the classical texts which form the history of western philosophy, which in turn has been one of the formative influences upon western culture. To teach students to think for themselves by teaching them the fundamentals of both formal and informal reasoning. To teach students to question their own basic assumptions as well as to articulate and support their own points of view carefully and thoughtfully, both on paper and in speech. To teach students how to subject someone else’s viewpoint or theory or argument to careful, rigorous, yet fair critique. To give students the confidence to engage in a sophisticated analytical way with the moral, political, aesthetic and religious questions which lie at the heart of their own culture in their own generation. To give students a breadth of interests which can only be acquired by studying the thought of both the present and past ages, and of both their own and other cultural milieus. To encourage students in the search for (and perhaps even the attainment of) truth.

3 sources, 9 Citations, MLA Format Click here read this research paper. Paper Abstract: Compares two statements on the nature of justice and injustice. Plato's APOLOGY and Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s LETTER FROM A BIRMINGHAM JAIL. Similarities of the two texts. Socrates and King functioning in a climate of social and political controversy. What it means to challenge injustice having the status of public policy. Paper Introduction: To compare Dr. King's Letter from Birmingham Jail with Plato's Apology is to compare two statements of ethical theory that in a number of ways overlap and converge. Each text discusses the nature of justice and injustice and what it means to challenge injustice. The texts are partly alike, too, politically; each is presented by a recognized authority (in Socrates' case) or leader (in King's case) who is beset with political unpopularity. Socrates says very directly that he has "many enemies of the worst and most dangerous kind" (39), and the Letter is a response to the eight Alabama clergymen who publicly criticized as "unwise and untimely" his protests in Birmingham aimed at desegregating public accommodations as a matter of national policy and law (Where passim). And the texts are alike from an analytical standpoint, systematically dissecting and pretty much destroying arguments against them.

T eaching Philosophy
General Good teaching is helping students to learn how to learn. The responsibility of teachers is to set the agenda and decide what knowledge should be considered. The responsibility of students is to choose to learn. The expert teacher promotes student learning by encouraging the discovery and construction of new knowledge. Is teaching an art or a science? I believe that it is both. I base my teaching on the learning theory of David Ausubel . His and other research in cognitive psychology has laid a sound theoretical foundation on which the craft of teaching can be practiced. Meaningful learning is the primary concept in Ausubel's theory. To learn meaningfully, individuals must focus on relations among ideas and link newly acquired knowledge to their previous knowledge. Meaningful learning can be promoted by the use of a variety of educational strategies and tools. Human beings are beautifully various and inventive. In the classroom each individual needs to be reached in his/her learning style. Incorporating different teaching modalities in every lesson is one of the many challenges that makes teaching such a fun and rewarding experience. Education changes the human experiences of individuals and opens up avenues that otherwise never could be explored. This is why the opportunity to facilitate and take part in education is an exhilarating life-long vocation.
