Philosophy

Metro Kids plays an important role in shaping the lives and enhancing the development of children enrolled in the district's before and after school care program. Service is provided to district families on a daily basis throughout the year except for weekends, legal holidays and inclement weather days . Hours of operation begin at 6:30 AM and end at 5:45 PM. A variety of activities are planned each day which teach children about the importance of making wise choices instead of facing the consequences of a bad decision. Opportunities to complete homework, play board games, draw a picture, read a book, make a craft or participate in more active games help children learn to use their creativity, share thoughts and practice skills learned in the classroom. District guidelines are followed in regard to zero tolerance for violence, fighting, weapons and sexual harassment

The award-winning nurses at Children’s Memorial are magnetic!
In December 2001, Children's Memorial Hospital, Department of Nursing , was awarded the designation as the first ANCC Magnet hospital in Illinois and the first freestanding children's hospital in the nation to receive the Magnet Award for Nursing Excellence. American Nurses Credentialing Center Widely considered the equivalent of an Olympic gold medal in sports, the Magnet award first granted in 1994, is now the most sought-after nation-wide award known in the field of hospital nursing. "In an environment rife with controversy about patient safety in hospitals, medical error rates, and nursing shortages, consumers need to know how good the care is at their local hospitals. Nursing's single most effective mechanism for providing that type of comparative information, a seal of approval for quality nursing care, is designation as a Magnet Hospital by the American Nurses Credentialing Center ." That’s what kids all over the country are debating as they enter the 2002 Kids Philosophy Slam contest. What is a Philosopy Slam? The Kids Philosophy Slam is an annual competition open to all kids first through 12th grade. In it, kids choose one answer to a philosophical question, one that focuses on very basic but important issues in human nature. Depending on their age, kids can express themselves in words or art or both, and each grade has a winner. The school that submits the most overall entries with the best overall scores will win the title of "the most philosophical school in America." Kids Philosophy Slam founder John Davis Starting the Slam John Davis founded the Kids Philosophy Slam in 2000 to make philosophy interesting and fun for kids. Davis said the idea of the Kids Philosophy Slam is to get kids to think independently and to look at their personal experiences for answers. "There is no pure right or wrong answer," Davis said.

Teaching Philosophy Can Deaf Children Be Taught to Think Philosophically? Maura J. Geisser

ABSTRACT: How is it possible for children to develop a "mature theory of mind"? There are at least three important components in acquiring a theory of mind. First, a child must acquire an ability to use, and understand, certain complex syntactic structures, especially those involved in discourse about mental states (e.g. belief, hope, memory, etc.). Second, a certain level of general cognitive development, in such areas as the ability for reasoning and inference, is necessary. Third, the ability for effective social interaction seems to correlate strongly with the acquisition of a mature theory of mind. The main problem is to explain the intimate and complex interconnections among these three areas of development. Hearing children normally acquire a theory of mind between ages 3-5, and profound changes have been observed to occur around age 4 which have a great impact on the three areas of development just noted. This problem of how children acquire a mature theory of mind has been the subject of an intense debate among cognitive scientists. One important focus of the debate is the question of priority: Are cognitive/social developments prior to linguistic developments, or is it the other way around? Perhaps, the two "co-evolve" in the course of general cognitive maturation.

96. 20th WCP: Why Not Lie? Television Talk And Moral Debate
This model is derived from Matthew Lipman s philosophy for Children, to note that the issues that kids want to talk of are often philosophical issues.

ABSTRACT: This paper proposes that we should aim to refine talk about issues in soap opera as a means of developing moral reasoning skills. I begin with a report of work at schools in New Jersey over 1996-97, during which excerpts of a popular soap opera, 'Party of Five,' were used as the basis of a rigorous philosophical discussion of moral behavior. I then turn to the distinctive role of soap opera as a locus of moral discussion, with an example of a Mexicana telenovela . I suggest that children are already engaged in moral debate about soap operas and are eager to develop a more rigorous critical framework for the debate. I argue that children appreciate the opportunity to flesh out the school yard gossip about soap operas with a philosophically sophisticated discussion. My approach draws on the work of Matthew Lipman in philosophy for children, Neil Postman's critique of television, and David Buckingham's analysis of children's responses to television. The paper proposes that we aim to refine talk about issues in soap opera as a means of developing moral reasoning skills. It begins with a report of work at schools in New Jersey over 1996-7, during which excerpts of a popular soap opera, 'Party of Five' were used as the basis of a rigorous philosophical discussion of moral behaviour. Brock Our Mission Statement
PLASP Child Care Services is a not-for-profit, community organization committed to providing high quality child care that is accessible, affordable and well managed. Our Philosophy Children
The Board of Directors and Staff of PLASP Child Care Services believe that every child deserves a safe, warm and caring environment (a place where children want to be), in which to grow and develop to their maximum potential. We are committed to fostering each child's self-esteem and feeling of self-worth and value through positive care giving and stimulating activities that will promote their emotional, physical, social and intellectual growth and development.
Every child is entitled to be given the opportunity to develop personal responsibility and social skills, to learn to problem-solve and to learn about other races and cultures. Each child is recognized as a unique individual who brings his or her own gifts to the program and deserves to be given the encouragement and space to try new things, explore new ideas and develop their own unique creativity.
