Welcome to Desert Springs PCA Church Website
Welcome to Desert Springs Desert Springs is a worshipping community that seeks to have the transforming power of “the gospel” (literally, the "good news concerning Jesus Christ") proclaimed in the lives of its people through word and deed and then spread throughout the city and suburbs of Tucson by Worship, Nurture, and Witness. We believe that personal change, social healing, an d cultural renewal are only truly possible when Christ is known and made known by the Church and her ministries. Thus, we desire to see Tucson become more and more a place where Jesus Christ is known, worshipped, and served. We are convinced of these three truths:
  • that God has a special concern and love for people throughout our city, that God calls people to hear and believe the good news of the gospel, and that people cannot live out their primary purpose of glorifying God unless they enjoy a relationship with Him and know Him personally.

Philosophy in Schools: Report from Sydney
Matthew Del Nevo
Philosophy has been brought into schools in the states of Victoria and Queensland as a High School Certificate (A level) subject. The Victorian Association for Philosophy in Schools (VAPS) is a strong network of educators and academic support. New South Wales, where I live, has the Philosophy for Children Association of New South Wales which is like the concept of 'nature' of Heraclitus, in that it seems to hide. I introduced Philosophy into Catherine McAuley, a Catholic Girl's High school in the West of Sydney with a population of over 1000. This is a working class school catering mainly to children of first and second generation migrants with a good academic reputation. Philosophy is part of the Gifted and Talented program, or Extension program, as it is otherwise called. It was a vertical class of Year 8 and 9s (3rd and 4th Years in UK). The Community of Inquiry is the way I run classes. This is method rather than content based. I find it hugely successful for philosophy purposes. In Australia, there is a peak body, the Federation of Australasian Philosophy for Children Associations (FAPCA). They have links with Montclair where Mathew Lipman's central institute for Philosophy in Schools is situated. FAPCA have teacher training courses available. I am certified by them to train teachers in philosophy in schools. FAPCA use the Community of Inquiry method. I assume you know it, so I won't go into it.

The Dynamics of Pupils in Philosophy Classes ( Home P4C-Sweden
Bo Malmhester Abstract
Since 1986 we have practised philosophy with children in the Swedish primary school. In 1989 we launched a research project which ended in 1996. We have in an account for some years evaluated the long-term effects of philosophy lessons a period of three years of regular philosophy. Here we make some remarks on our findings as to the group dynamics in the philosophy classes. The findings might be important to those teachers of philosophy who are interested in improving the dialectics of dialogue in the classroom B among other things by identifying some categories of driving pupils: the truth seekers, the creative ones, the story-tellers, the mind-builders, the dogmatic ones, the active listeners, and the questioners or the critical ones. With these categories we try to explain why a class with philosophy in school twice a week had more active pupils and were much more related to each other than to the teacher, than in other respect equal or superior classes. (See that part of our report in Thinking, Vol.12, No 4, 1996.) Two other themes come along. I point to some observations of differences between boys and girls, and also to categories of pupils that seem to gain the most of philosophy.

Kids Corner Philosophy Kids’ Corner is designed to meet the social, emotional, physical, intellectual and creative needs of each child. We believe that:
  • Each child is a person whose growth occurs in developmental stages that are sequential and continuous;
  • Each child is unique with individual physical, social, emotional, and intellectual needs and cultural backgrounds;
  • Creativity and independent discovery of children are best promoted through the provision of hands-on experiences in a warm and nurturing play-based environment;
  • Children learn best when their educational experience is a cooperative venture between home and school.

Creating Learning Opportunities through Enquiry "It's about linking up. In Philosophy you start off with one question and try to make it in to another." - Child (7 yrs) We are not particularly keen on stories written especially for thinking. There are millions of texts and pictures that can be used to stimulate questions and discussion that are readily available. We want children to question and think about the things around them so we are not recommending specially written texts however useful these may be to others. However, the following organisations and publications are really worth a look. Organisations involved with Philosophy DialogueWorks Karin Murris and Roger Sutcliffe site - training for schools and business in Philosophy with Children. This is not a new thing, and has been the case from millenia past, and across many cultures across the globe. Sometimes, the moral story is not direct, and indeed can be very deep, and sometimes it is enveloped in satire or even cynicist philosophy.

and 12, who are very inquisitive, and wanted to know what I was learning when I was taking my
philosophy course, but unfortunately found the subject simply confusing when I attempted to explain it
to them! I've read Sophie's World myself, but can't see them reading it themselves, and I think it would be
better to introduce the subject to them in bitesize chunks, and on more contemporary issues, rather
than elaborating on its history as that book does (which, although perhaps a necessary approach for
scholars, is likely to bore young children!). Does anyone know of any basic introductory books to the subject for children of those ages? Or, preferably, simply some clues as to how to get started? I particularly want to teach my siblings how to
