4. Philosophy For Kids
The kids never had any trouble figuring out what the philosophical question was. You can read about the philosophical fun I had with those kids by
http://www.philosophyforkids.com/introduction.shtml
The Flower Question "Look, Auntie Gertie," shouted Freddie, as he walked past the hall table; those flowers have their heads bowed. Are they praying? Or have they died?" Freddie and his family were just returning home from a four-day trip to the Lake District. His mother, his father, and his sister, Alice, were still getting their luggage out of the car. The chrysanthemums on the hall table had caught Freddie's attention as soon as he got through the front door. Instead of showing him their bright, yellow faced, as they had when he left, the flowers were indeed all bent over. "Not to worry," said Aunt Gertie cheerfully; "they got very thirsty while we were gone. But a drink of cool water is all they need." Aunt Gertie, who was the flower expert in the Davidson family, dropped her suitcase and walked straight into the kitchen. There she filled a small, red watering can and returned to give the chrysants a drink. Freddie looked on thoughtfully. "I didn't know flowers get thirsty," he said. `"Just like you," Aunt Gertie reassured him; "but they take a long, long drink. It will be tomorrow before their thirst is quenched and they're happy again."

"Above all, I didn't want those kids to say to me at the end of the class, 'Now tell us what the answer is.' And, in fact, they never did that. I think that, by making the problem something that a child character in my story gave expression to, I encouraged them to think that the problem might have a solution, or at least some kind of resolution, they themselves were capable of coming up with." Gifted Students and Philosophy: The Sound of a Tree Falling in the Forest ... by David A. White, in Gifted Child Today
Groans might greet anyone posing the question, "If a tree falls in the forest with no one around, does it make a sound? This venerable poser is, however, laden with philosophical intrigue. In fact, the issues that this question raises typically tantalize gifted students...

A Message to Teachers in Chicago's Middle and High Schools
from
the Philosophy Department of Loyola University Chicago
Wonder is part of childhood, and philosophy begins and ends in wonder. Thanks to the federal GEAR UP program and other sources of funding, philosophy professors from Loyola are now available to visit classes or teachers' groups of local middle and high schools. There is no charge for this service. If you're interested in having us, we'd like to participate in a few informal but intelligent discussions of whatever philosophical topics seem appropriate to you, the classroom teachers. By opening up new vistas for young minds, these discussions can give school children a sense of how exciting a liberal education can be. Possible discussion topics are:
  • The Golden Rule The Nature of Friendship Justice The Concept of Race The Uses of Knowledge The Trial and Death of Socrates (not surprisingly, a perennial favorite!) Other issues that you think are important for your students.

BellaOnline's News for Kids Editor Philosophy For Kids Philosophy is a love of wisdom the actual word is derived from two Greek words "philo" meaning love, "Sofia" meaning wisdom. Philosophy is also knowledge, logical way of going after the truth, wisdom and the reason of insolvable problems. A philosopher is deep thinker one who strives to explain away all the mysteries and brings them to light by logical thinking. A tyrant must put on the appearance of uncommon devotion to religion. Subjects are less apprehensive of illegal treatment from a ruler whom they consider god-fearing and pious. On the other hand, they do less easily move against him, believing that he has the gods on his side.

    Harry Potter and the
Half-Blood Prince Philosophy for Kids Posted by: adimantis on Thursday, February 10, 2005 - 04:54 PM Scotland Today: "According to one academic, a course in philosophy can help youngsters get a better grasp of subjects like maths and English at school. Scotland Today's Shereen Nanjiani met one class which was grappling with Descartes' philosophical theory of mind-body dualism. While the subject may be beyond many people, that does not matter. It is also over the heads of the youngsters in the class, but the idea is not to make them into great philosophers in ivory towers but instead to develop their skills of critical thinking."
