Implications of Socio-Cultural Contexts for Ethics of Clinical Trials
Welcome to our on-line database of resources in ethics of clinical trials . Our aim is to provide a comprehensive database of published material, together with selected useful webpages. We hope that this database will be useful to ethics committees, researchers in medicine and in medical ethics, and writers and opinion-formers in this area. Most of the material registered here is in a range of journals, not always easy to come by, so this database will be of use mainly to those with the resources and time to find it. We hope that we will at least save everyone the time it has taken us (a year) to locate and assess this material! The articles are displayed according to their priority. To gather the materials archived here, we used on-line searching of Medline, Sociofile, and PsychLit, together with hand-searches of the major ethics, medical sociology and anthropology, philosophy of science, and medicine journals. We also relied on helpful information gained through personal contacts. Any further information will be gratefully received, and will be used in updating this database.

Course Information Course Description: Course Name: Introduction to Philosophy Course Number: PHIL 1030 This is a general introductory course designed to familiarize the student with the basics of philosophical inquiry. In this course we will discuss the “big” questions of life while looking at some of the answers the great philosophers of the Western tradition have devised. Examples of the kinds of questions we will discuss are the following: What gives life meaning? How should one live a good life? How do we know what we think we know? Can we know anything? Is it possible to logically prove God’s existence? Why should we obey authority? What is the most just way to distribute goods in a society? Is there a separation between the body and mind? In other words, we will be investigating the fundamental questions pertaining to reality, truth, freedom, the nature of humankind, the existence of God and social/political theory. Course Objectives: OBJECTIVES: A. Demonstrate a basic understanding of philosophy. B. Demonstrate a basic understanding of the various branches of philosophy.

PHIL 006F The Moral Life
GC Philosophical Douglas MacLean This course will explore the meaning of basic moral concepts as they are understood in philosophy, science, and art. The topics fall under two basic questions: What are our duties to other people? What kind of life is best for human beings? The topics relating to moral duties include: Are people by nature selfish or altruistic? How do ideas of fairness and equality determine our duties? What are our duties to strangers in need? The topics relating to the question of the ideal life include: Does the question have a single objective answer? To what extent are moral ideals shaped by individual preferences and cultural norms? To what extent are they shaped by reason? And to what extent are they determined by genetics or biology? What is the relationship between reason and emotion in a life that is healthy and flourishing?
