MEDIEVAL ACADEMIC DISCUSSION GROUPS
by Edwin Duncan Here is a listing of medieval academic discussion groups you may want to join along with the addresses of the listservers that carry them. Remember that if you are sending a message for the other subscribers to read, don't send it to the listserver but to the name of the network followed by the node address for the listserver. Thus, once you've already joined Ansax-l and want to send a message to its members, you will address it to ansax-l@wvnvm.wvnet.edu, not to listserv@wvnvm.wvnet.edu. Annotations for some of the networks appear in the paragraphs below the list. NETWORK: LISTSERVER ADDRESS: SUBJECT AREA: ANSAX-L is the discussion group for ANSAXNET, the Anglo-Saxon Network. It has over 600 members from fifteen or twenty different countries and, as one would expect from such a large membership, has a fairly high volume of mail. Discussions cover not only Old English language and literature, but also Anglo-Saxon archeology, history, philosophy, and the arts. As with other networks, one also runs across calls for papers, job listings, announcements of new journals, new computer services, and the like. ARTHURNET, a network devoted to all subjects relating to King Arthur and the knights of the round table, has apparently replaced an older and less successful one called CAMELOT, an English network.

      Educational Theory Discussion Group
Educational Theory has been published at the University of Illinois for more than fifty years. It is considered the leading journal of theoretical work across the educational disciplines, with a special emphasis in the philosophy of education, and is known for having very high editorial standards. The Journal sponsors an Editorial Discussion Group, in which students read, discuss, and evaluate selected essays under consideration for publication. The purpose of the group is to give students a chance to see manuscripts under review at the journal, to participate in critical discussions of their merits and publishability, and to get a better sense of why some papers get published and others do not. Often the group's discussions are about general editorial issues (such as, What is the real value of anonymous reviewing?) as well as about the substance and content of the articles under review.

Students in philosophy have used the facilities at the Library and Laura Lander Hall on an individual basis, yet we found that many of our students required individual instruction for basic computer tasks including the use Majordomo Discussions Lists, Message Boards, and and logic software. Approximately 500 students from all disciplines at the University enroll in philosophy courses each year, and many of these students undertake logic courses as part of the logical and analytical thought component of General Education. Also, many of our students are Education and PEES majors required to take an introductory philosophy class. We have found that students benefit from additional help with basic computer tasks. Consequently, the philosophy faculty are dedicated to help all our students be successful with the technological component of our philosophy courses. The Philosophy Server Philosophy makes extensive use of computer-assisted instruction, and the use of a Philosophy Server is an essential part of coursework for many classes. In some courses, student homework is done on computers, saved to disk, and then evaluated by the instructor. In other courses, archived Majordomo Discussion Groups and Chat are an important part of the class. In fact, past and present Majordomo discussion groups provided by the Philosophy Server include business, history, English, Spanish, Linux, and philosophy. In several philosophy courses, students are able to submit papers directly and immediately to a Web page, and other students are able to comment on-line directly and immediately on the same Web page.

    Transferable Skills
The Philosophy Tripos enables students to develop the following transferable skills.
    1) Intellectual skills (e.g. critical, analytical, synthesising and problem-solving skills)
These skills are all central to the study of Philosophy. Responsibility for fostering them is divided between the Faculty and the Colleges. They are developed in lectures, classes, discussion groups, seminars, supervisions and examinations.
    2) Communication skills (written and oral)
Writing skills are practised in weekly essays, submitted essays and dissertations. Since it is principally supervisors who help students to improve their writing, this aspect of their development is primarily the responsibility of Directors of Studies. Responsibility for the development of oral skills falls both to the Faculty, which organises discussion groups and seminars in which students debate philosophical issues, and to Directors of Studies, who arrange supervisions for students and in some cases run College seminars. Since philosophy students are mainly supervised individually or in pairs, they have plenty of opportunity to develop their oral skills through philosophical discussion. Within the University there are also societies and reading groups where students can refine their oral skills.

Deciphering the Acronyms Listed here are some of the more common acronyms found in posts: GIS is a broad field, requiring expertise in a range of areas ranging from cartography, systems administration, relational database management, programming and of course, spatial analysis. Even the well-versed GIS professional will come across many difficult tasks that require guidance from others in the field. Unfortunately, GIS professionals tend to work solo or in small groups, making it difficult to consult with coworkers for direction. Luckily, there is a strong support community readily accessible both via the Internet and through focused meetings. Below are outlined peer-to-peer resources that GIS professionals can utilize to help guide them through their projects. Discussion Groups Discussion groups have become essential to most GIS professionals. They are a free, and in most cases, timely source of information. There are two types: email lists and forums.

Author : Lawrence M. Hinman Title : The Virtual Seminar Room: Using a World Wide Web Site in Teaching Ethics Teaching Philosophy , 17 (4), pp.319-29 Date Reviewer : B.Weiss
    Summary
The paper describes the author's gradual development of web site devoted to ethics. It is divided into two main sections. In the first the web is treated as a resource in the second it is treated as (or as providing) a community. More information is continually being made available on the web. Hinman mentions the ways in which journals might go online: offering cheaper online subscriptions, placing past issues online or offering free online access to those whose institutions subscribe to the journal. The trend towards web-based information is very definitely with us. Hinman embraces this but notes that it can only facilitate and can in no way substitute for careful philosophical analysis.
