Because journal article citations are not individually included in URSUS , you will need to use a discipline-specific index to find this information (see Resources by Subject If you do not know the exact subject heading describing the topic you need, try doing a keyword search using other word/s related to that topic and then click on the subject heading links found within the relevant records to find additional, useful resources. Professor Köddermann Research Resources, Milne Library, SUNY College at Oneonta, Spring 2004 Steps in writing a paper Selected reference books Finding books Finding articles ... Plagiarism
Steps in writing a paper: Overview
    • Select a topic. (This can be challenging. If your topic is too narrow, you will have difficulty finding enough information; if it is too broad, you will be swamped with information) Background information can often be found in encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference works . If you decide to use the information, don't forget to cite it in proper fashion. Remember to paraphrase, use your own language, and don't replace your arguments with quotations. Find books (Books often treat a topic more comprehensively than journal articles. Books can be a good place to find an overview of a topic. References to additional articles and books can often be found in a bibliography at the end of a chapter.) Your paper qualifies as a research paper if it includes at least one primary and one secondary source in book form. Find articles (Journal articles usually have the most up to date information on a topic. Since journal articles are often more focused than books, they may provide more specific information than books. References to additional articles and books can often be found in a bibliography at the end of an article.) Remember to demonstrate the level of your research by quoting from refereed journals.

    Famous Astronomers
Astronomers are listed chronologically. To find more information about these scientists, please visit Famous Astronomers and Astrophysicists and click on that page's links. Many of the astronomers on this page were also physicists, mathematicians, and philosophers, but their contributions listed here are limited to those specific to astronomy and astrophysics.
Thales (624-547 B.C., Ionian) was a Greek philosopher who traveled widely in Mesopotamia and Egypt, and brought astronomical records from these cultures back to Greece. He believed that the Earth is a disk floating on an endless ocean. Legend has it that he correctly predicted a solar eclipse in the year 585 B.C. Anaximander (611-547 B.C., Ionian) was a Greek philosopher who made the first detailed maps of the Earth and the sky. He knew that the Earth was round, and believed that it was free-floating and unsupported. He measured its circumference, and was the first to put forward the idea that celestial bodies make full circles in their orbits. One of his greatest contributions was the fact that he was the first to conceptualize space as having depth. Pythagoras (569-475 B.C., Ionian)

    The Copernican System
Location: http://es.rice.edu:80/ES/humsoc/Galileo/Things/copernican_system.html This site discusses in detail not only Copernicus' system but his life and how he came to formulate his theory. Copernicus lived from 1473-1543; he spent his life as a physician, lawyer, and church administrator. Copernicus' book which caused all the controversy was his De Revolutionibus and it was only the first 11 chapters in this book which said anything controversial. Copernicus stated that the Sun was the center of the universe and the Earth had a triple motion around the center. He also explained the retrograde motion of the planets and settled the order of the planets. The heliocentric theory was rejected by almost everyone, but the book was widely admired.Later astronomers used the book to base their own theories on and as a result Copernicus gained many followers. the site then goes on to explain exactly what the heliocentric theory is and the minor details Copernicus worked out.

North Carolina State University Introduction A while back - I’m too embarrassed to tell you how long ago this all started - I decided to undertake a biography of the German philosopher Johann Gottlieb Fichte (1762-1814). It would have been perfectly normal, I suppose, to begin the work with some hesitation. I faced a formidable task. But “hesitation” doesn’t quite capture my state of mind. The fact is, I was nagged by anxiety – and I’ve never really shaken it. I knew I couldn’t expect much sympathy from other biographers. After all, I had an open field – the last major biography of Fichte appeared in 1922 – and, if only because I had been foolish enough to choose such a forbidding subject, I had little reason to fear competition. Most of the grueling detective work that biography usually entails had been done for me. Since 1962 twenty-nine volumes of the Complete Works I had another enviable advantage. My subject was clearly significant enough to be worth the trouble. From the 1780s, under the impact of Immanuel Kant’s great
