Peter Abelard
Location: http://www.nd.edu/Departments/Maritain/etext/abelard.htm This site is found at the Jacques Maritain Center, written by William Turner. It presents a very detailed account of his life and accomplishments. The site begins with a comprehensive look at Abelard's youth and how he came to be involved with theology and philosophy. The text then goes on to describe his work. It talks about individual works and topics presented. This article contains much information on the life and work of Peter Abelard. The Jaques Maritain Center is a very dense place which has much useful information. It is a very respectable site. This particular site is also very respectable and would be of much use to any student or faculty that would need to know information about Peter Abelard. Tom Sclazo.
Peter Abelard: Historia Calamitatum
Location: http://www.fordham.edu/halsall/basis/abelard-histcal.html This text is located at the Medieval Sourcebook and is translated by Henry Adams Bellows. It inclues selections from Abelard's Historia Calamitatum , including chapters 2, 4, 6, 8, and 9. These sections are preceded by a lengthy introduction to Peter Abelard including his life and history. This section also includes a brief introduction to the work and, as a whole, attempts to introduce us to Abelard. This site would be very valuable to anyone doing work on Abelard's work. It does not give the entire text, but it gives a fair amount of selections that could at least give much information on the work. This site is also useful for a quick reference of a short biography of Peter Abelard. This site would be very beneficial to anyone needing information on Abelard and especially on his

The particular meaning of naturalism varies with what is opposed to it. It is usually considered the opposite of idealism , is sometimes equated with empiricism or materialism , and is not easily distinguished from positivism . Naturalism limits itself to a search for causes and takes little account of reasons. Naturalism in the broad sense has been maintained in diverse forms by Aristotle, the Cynics, the Stoics, Giordano Bruno, Spinoza, Thomas Hobbes, Auguste Comte, Friedrich Nietzsche, Karl Marx, William James, John Dewey, and Alfred North Whitehead, philosophers who differ widely on specific questions. Some, like Comte and Nietzsche, were professed atheists, while others accepted a god in pantheistic terms. Aristotle, James, and Dewey all attempted to explain phenomena in terms of biological processes of perception; Spinoza and the idealists tended to emphasize metaphysics; later thinkers of all schools have placed emphasis on unifying the scientific viewpoint with an all-encompassing reality. This amalgamation of science and an overall explanation of the universe in naturalistic terms is the source of much of contemporary philosophic thought.

Bacon, Francis
Bacon was the lord chancellor of England; his removal in 1621 makes for a most interesting story. For legal philosophers, however, Francis Bacon is most well known for his delineation of the principles of the inductive scientific method , which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science. Bacon was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power."

Arthur Schopenhauer
Among 19 th century philosophers, Arthur Schopenhauer was among the first to contend that at its core, the universe is not a rational place. Inspired by Plato and Kant, both of whom regarded the world as being more amenable to reason, Schopenhauer developed their philosophies into an instinct-recognizing, mystical, and essentially ascetic outlook, emphasizing that in the face of what he believed to be a world filled with endless strife, we ought to minimize our natural desires in order to achieve a more tranquil frame of mind and a disposition towards universal beneficence. Often considered to be a thoroughgoing pessimist, Schopenhauer in fact advocated ways via artistic, moral and ascetic forms of awareness to overcome what he considered to be a frustration-filled and fundamentally painful human condition. Since his death in 1860, Schopenhauer's philosophy has had a special attraction for those engaged in music, literature, and the visual arts.
