Protagoras (c. 490 - c. 420 BCE) Protagoras of Abdera was one of several fifth century Greek thinkers (including also Gorgias, Hippias, and Prodicus) collectively known as the Older Sophists, a group of traveling teachers or intellectuals who were experts in rhetoric (the science of oratory) and related subjects. Protagoras is known primarily for three claims (1) that man is the measure of all things (which is often interpreted as a sort of radical relativism) (2) that he could make the "worse (or weaker) argument appear the better (or stronger)" and (3) that one could not tell if the gods existed or not. While some ancient sources claim that these positions led to his having been tried for impiety in Athens and his books burned, these stories may well have been later legends. Protagoras' notion that judgments and knowledge are in some way relative to the person judging or knowing has been very influential, and is still widely discussed in contemporary philosophy.

Philosophy and Art
Philosophy, science and art differ principally according to their subject-matter and also the means by which they reflect, transform and express it. In a certain sense, art, like philosophy, reflects reality in its relation to man, and depicts man, his spiritual world, and the relations between individuals in their interaction with the world. No scientifically, let alone artistically, thinking person can remain deaf to the wise voice of true philosophy, can fail to study it as a vitally necessary sphere of culture, as the source of world-view and method. Equally true is the fact that no thinking and emotionally developed person can remain indifferent to literature, poetry, music, painting, sculpture and architecture. Obviously, one may be to some extent indifferent to some highly specialised science, but it is impossible to live an intellectually full life if one rejects philosophy and art. The person who is indifferent to these spheres deliberately condemns himself to a depressing narrowness of outlook. Does not the artistic principle in philosophical thought deserve the attention of, and do credit to, the thinking mind, and vice versa? In a certain generalised sense the true philosopher is like the poet. He, too, must possess the aesthetic gift of free associative thinking in integral images. And in general one cannot achieve true perfection of creative thought in any field without developing the ability to perceive reality from the aesthetic standpoint. Without this precious intellectual prism through which people view the world everything that goes beyond the empirical description of facts, beyond formulae and graphs may look dim and indistinct.

Another Canuck scribe in trouble for plagiarism
Splayed across roughly over half of the opinion page in yesterday's Ottawa Citizen is a 1,514-word article in which veteran journalist Robert Sibley admits to several instances where he used the words of others without proper attribution. The piece is thoroughly apologetic and itemizes each instance. It follows on the heels of the firing of Elizabeth Nickson from the National Post over a similar offense. Sibley, who was on the paper's Editorial Board, has now been "reassigned" within the Citizen. The article begins, "After 25 years in journalism as a reporter, editor, feature writer, essayist, columnist and editorial writer, it is with deep regret that I inform colleagues and readers of mistakes of attribution in some of my recent work."

Philosophy This Guide is a selective list of reference tools available for study and research in the discipline of PHILOSOPHY. Materials can be found by consulting BORIS , the Library’s online catalogue. For works BY a particular author, search under the author’s name, or the title of the work. For works ABOUT an author or his writings, search under the author’s name as SUBJECT, or under the subject itself. To find philosophy books on the shelves, look for classification (call) numbers in the B-BS range. Some works in philosophy may be found outside this call number range; for example, works on the philosophy of education are found in the LA-LC classification. The Library’s periodical holdings in PHILOSOPHY can be accessed using BORIS by typing in the title of the periodical sought. Current issues of philosophy journals are shelved in the Periodicals Room off the Main Lobby; back issues are bound and shelved on the basement level. NOTE: The classification (call) number after each entry in this Guide denotes the location of the book in the Library. The designation Ref. or Ref.Ind.Sd. means the book is shelved in the Reference Room. The designation Ref.M. means that the item is shelved on the Reference Mezzanine.

Self-Guided Tutorial in Philosophy
As the oldest of human intellectual pursuits, philosophy is devoted to examining fundamental questions that may reflect nearly everything as everything can be philosophically examined. Primary Branches of Philosophy: Within these basic branches, specializations such as bioethics, cosmology, or ontology are found. Philosophy is extremely fluid in how it can shed light on other disciplines and their respective topics of interest. Firstly, it is firmly placed in the humanities: Secondly, it interacts critically with other disciplines in both the humanities and the social sciences: As one of the Humanities, Philosophy is book-dependent, that is, it relies heavily on the use of books, (often called monographs). As you embark on your topic for your paper in philosophy, there are library resources that can help expedite your searching for pertinent and relevant materials. Major Philosophy Websites: Philosophy in Cyberspace
This site offers a cornucopia of resources in philosophy. Steps in writing a paper: Overview
  • Select a topic. (This can be challenging. If your topic is too narrow, you will have difficulty finding enough information; if it is too broad, you will be swamped with information) Background information can often be found in encyclopedias, dictionaries, and other reference works . If you decide to use the information, don't forget to cite it in proper fashion. Remember to paraphrase, use your own language, and don't replace your arguments with quotations. Find books (Books often treat a topic more comprehensively than journal articles. Books can be a good place to find an overview of a topic. References to additional articles and books can often be found in a bibliography at the end of a chapter.) Your paper qualifies as a research paper if it includes at least one primary and one secondary source in book form.

General Purpose
This pathfinder has been created to aid those seeking information about notable western philosophers. Western philosophy spans a large time period and a tremendous amount of different ideas. The attempt to follow and discover the people who have created these ideas can be a long, arduous task. This document contains print and Internet resources recommended as starting points for research and by no means should be considered all inclusive. Western philosophy can be divided into three sections: ancient, medieval, and modern. When researching philosophers one can use this as a guide to ideas and movements associated with philosophers.
