BIOGRAPHIES AND CRITICISMS CLASSIFICATION
Architects Artists Criticism of Individual Works General Biography Procedures ... Special Categories POLICY BACKGROUND Prior to the adoption of Dewey 19, the UIUC Library used a variety of special numbers for both individual and collective biographies, in addition to "B.", which was assigned for individual biography, and 921-928 for collective biography. Many of the previously used numbers for both individual and collective biographies have been discontinued in Dewey. In accordance with the policy that was established at the adoption of Dewey 19, "B." is no longer used in establishing new biography numbers. Under 920, only 920.001-920.09 and 920.7 are used for very general collective biographies. Most new (unestablished) individual biographies , as well as other, subject specific collective biographies, are currently classed by subject , adding either standard subdivision (for individual biography), or (for collective biography) as appropriate from Table 1. For purposes of establishing a consistent policy regarding the use of previously established biography numbers versus when to establish new biography numbers, CPAC voted in 1997 in favor of a

Philosophy "Philosophy means literally the love of wisdom... Philosophy is that knowledge of human reason which penetrates to the ultimate foundations of things; ...it is concerned with all reality, but especially with the existence and purpose of man... Philosophy... is the universal science because it considers the totality of reality and investigates the basic causes of all things; it pushes on to the ultimate and absolute cause of all being. The primary starting point of philosophy is human activity, especially man's acts of knowing and willing..." (From: Philosophical Dictionary by Walter Brugger. UNI Stacks B 43 B713 1972). Philosophy includes the disciplines of metaphysics, logic, ethics, and aesthetics.

The Uses and Abuses of Philosophical Biographies
Tim Madigan on the Lives of the Great Saints (not!). The Library of Living Philosophers : "Perfectly silly! He had never read any of these – had opened the Moore volume – read about Moore’s boyhood – very nice, but the shoemaker also had a boyhood, very nice. Dewey – was he still living? Ought not to be." Wittgenstein: Conversations 1949-51. Schopenhauer is said to have once remarked: "It is difficult enough to devise a philosophy – one cannot be expected to exemplify it as well." Nonetheless, the question still arises: How much should we know about a philosopher’s personal life (if anything) in evaluating his or her philosophical views? The uproar over Victor Farias’s book Heidegger and Nazism A fascination with the lives of famous philosophers dates back to at least the time of Diogenes Laertius, whose work depicts in often excruciating detail the manner in which the learned met their end. Library Research Guide to Philosophy. 1990. (Stx. B 52 L57 1990
This text accepts the claim that philosophical research is about solving problems. The text proceeds to show how to find various solutions to these problems.
nd edition (1997) available through netLibrary
Included in this guide are chapters on various types of philosophy reference tools: General bibliographic and research guides, dictionaries and handbooks, as well as chapters devoted to specialized branches of study. There is a chapter on core journals and another on professional associations. The nd edition gives a useful emphasis on electronic sources.
The purpose of this work is to help philosophers, librarians, students of library science, and other interested persons in the use of resources in philosophy. The book is divided into three parts: Part one is a history of philosophy; part two is a survey of the field by a philosophy specialist, and the third part is an annotated listing of major reference works.
