Biography of Adam Smith (1723-1790)
Quote Adam Smith was a Scottish political economist and philosopher. He has become famous by his influential book The Wealth of Nations (1776). Smith was the son of the comptroller of the customs at Kirkcaldy, Fife, Scotland. The exact date of his birth is unknown. However, he was baptized at Kirkcaldy on June 5, 1723, his father having died some six months previously. At the age of about fifteen, Smith proceeded to Glasgow university, studying moral philosophy under "the never-to-be-forgotten" Francis Hutcheson (as Smith called him). In 1740 he entered Balliol college, Oxford, but as William Robert Scott has said, "the Oxford of his time gave little if any help towards what was to be his lifework," and he relinquished his exhibition in 1746. In 1748 he began delivering public lectures in Edinburgh under the patronage of Lord Kames. Some of these dealt with rhetoric and belles-lettres, but later he took up the subject of "the progress of opulence," and it was then, in his middle or late 20s, that he first expounded the economic philosophy of "the obvious and simple system of natural liberty" which he was later to proclaim to the world in his Inquiry into the Nature and Causes of the Wealth of Nations . About 1750 he met David Hume, who became one of the closest of his many friends.

82 Biographies History is the collective story of all people. Although each and every person has its part in history, the decisions and deeds of some tend to have more influence on the course of history than those of others. Some of these are known, like Churchill or Hitler, some of them are less known, like Turing or Heisenberg. Some we will never know, since the history we know of tends to focus on those events that are reported. Writing but small biographies for only a small collection of those who shaped this troubled times is a task we simply cannot fulfil. We hope that some of our readers feel up to the task of submitting biographies, or perhaps a small addendum to existing ones. Thanks! Order by Surname

Alfred North Whitehead, in the throes of an agonizing depression, which left her all but severed from everyone around her, and from the world itself.
Something snapped in Russell. He became "overwhelmed," he would later write, with a "sense of the solitude of each human soul." Within five minutes of the experience, he came to believe that the loneliness of existence is "unendurable," that the only way out is love of the "highest intensity," that "whatever does not spring" from such love is harmful "or at best useless," and that social relations should be ordered accordingly.
That became the ethical vision that would animate Russell's work and thinking for the next seven decades.

Make it known on the Discussion Forum Available on this site are a large number of short biographies of a wide variety of philosophers throughout history. A few of the biographies are of other intellectuals - psychologists, sociologists, scientists and others. However, the vast majority are philosophers of one sort or another. For the convenience of users, I am adding additional indexes to go alongside the main one. Thus, there is not only the "complete" listing that includes all relevant biographies, but there are also sub-indexes that collect together biographies of famous philosophers by type and/or nationality. The first two additions are the Ancient Greek Philosophers and the American Philosophers.

The conviction that there is an intimate connection between Wittgenstein's life and his work is shared by the authors. It is legitimated in reference to Wittgenstein's own practice of not wanting to separate the task of becoming the sort of human being he wanted to be from the task of becoming the sort of philosopher he wanted to be. Wittgenstein's life can be characterized by engaging in a search for philosophical clarity as well as ethical decency ( Anständigkeit ). It can be reasonably said that a good philosophical biography illuminates aspects of this connection between life and philosophy. This ideal is not just confined to the special case of Wittgenstein. We have to keep in mind that most ancient philosophers equated the search for truth with the search for the good life. Socrates would not even have understood how a good philosopher could be differentiated from a good person. This historical fact might at least throw some doubt on the legitimacy of the modern understanding of philosophy as a predominantly professional endeavor and an autonomous discipline among others without any relation to biographical issues.

55. Cognitive_history
In science there exist general accepted standards which guide not only its But generally biographies are not very highly esteemed by philosophers.
http://www.tu-berlin.de/fb1/kogwiss/cognitive_history.htm
Dieter Münch, What is cognitive history of philosophy? In: Roberto Casati / Graham White, ed., Philosophy and the cognitive sciences. Papers of the 16th International Wittgenstein Symposium Kirchberg am Wechsel: The Austrian Ludwig Wittgenstein Society 1993, pp. 363 - 366. In science there exist general accepted standards which guide not only its methodology but also the questions which are accepted as scientific. Everyone who has grasped these standards can at least in principle understand a scientist's work and these standards allow the development of a computational philosophy of science (cf. Thagard, Computational Philosophy of Science). In philosophy, however, the situation is different. Although rationality is essential for philosophy, even trained philosophers do quite often not know what to make of a certain philosophical classic. There is, therefore, in philosophy the need for interpretation which cannot refer to general accepted standards but which has to work out the individual character of the work in question. Thus the question arises whether there is a general framework or a law of qualitative structure which enables a systematic and scientific approach to philosophy without neglecting their individual character. According to the cognitive approach sketched above the philosopher is an intelligent system situated in a certain world in which he has to find his own way. His philosophy is the result (or the traces) of a kind of problem solving. The task of the cognitive historian of philosophy, now, is not merely to collect these ideas and consider what may be their place in the museum of ideas, but to reconstruct the questions the philosopher has asked and to interpret his philosophy as the answer to them. Similar claims have already been made by historians such as Collingwood. Without cognitive approach, however, these endeavours to take history seriously cannot but base their approach on empathy leading consequently to an idealism which identifies knowledge of history with self-knowledge (cf. Collingwood, Autobiography, chap. X).

His system is mild and characteristic of the Jesuit theologians. His "congruism" is a middle course between the teachings of Luis Molina and the Dominican predestinarian teachings. SuArez taught that one may hold the same doctrine by science and faith. His teaching on the divine right of kings that earthly power is properly held by the body of men and that kingly power is derived from them so enraged James I of England that the king had SuArez's De defensione fidei burned by the hangman. This political doctrine, based on the Roman Catholic doctrine of the equality before God of all men, is a basis of subsequent Catholic teachings on democracy. SuArez was highly esteemed by Grotius and his followers. In his Tractatus de legibus he made an important distinction between natural law and international law, which he saw as based on custom.
