Related Category: Philosophy, Biographies Francis Bacon Instauratio Magna, but completed only two parts, The Advancement of Learning (1605), later expanded in Latin as De Augmentis Scientiarum (1623), and the Novum Organum (1620). Bacon's contribution to philosophy was his application of the inductive method of modern science. He urged full investigation in all cases, avoiding theories based on insufficient data. He has been widely censured for being too mechanical, failing to carry his investigations to their logical ends, and not staying abreast of the scientific knowledge of his own day. In the 19th cent., Macaulay initiated a movement to restore Bacon's prestige as a scientist. Today his contributions are regarded with considerable respect. In The New Atlantis (1627) he describes a scientific utopia that found partial realization with the organization of the Royal Society in 1660. His

Bacon, Francis
Bacon was the lord chancellor of England; his removal in 1621 makes for a most interesting story. For legal philosophers, however, Francis Bacon is most well known for his delineation of the principles of the inductive scientific method , which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science. Bacon was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power."
Bagehot, Walter
Mr. Bagehot was a mathematician; a moral philosopher; a political economist; a trained, though not a practising, lawyer; a banker; a shipowner; and, from 1860 till his too early death in 1877, the editor and manager of the Economist . Primarily, however, Bagehot was a reader and critic of books. I have a number of Bagehot's books including:

  • Notes.
Introduction:- Bacon's real claim to fame is: not that he, as the lord chancellor, in 1621, was removed from office for accepting a litigant's bribe; nor, that he was the real writer of the Shakespearean plays (one of the controversies in English literature, the "Baconian controversy") ; but rather Francis Bacon is known as a philosopher, one of the first order. Bacon delineated the principles of the inductive method, which constituted a breakthrough in the approach to science, even though philosophers and scientists of the day, - and seemingly today, yet - repudiated both his theories and methodology, alike. Bacon argued that the only knowledge of importance to man was empirically rooted in the natural world; and that a clear system of scientific inquiry would assure man's mastery over the world. He was the originator of the expression, "Knowledge is power." He was quite taken up by the "materialist" theories and the resultant discoveries of both Copernicus and Galileo . Bacon, along with Galileo are known in the literature as "the great anti-Aristotelians who created the 'modern scientific' view of Nature."

    Woman of Note
    ...
Peter Abelard , she was a brilliant scholar in her own right and had a reputation for intelligence and insight before she ever met Pierre. After the tragic end of her affair with Abelard, Heloise entered the convent at Argenteuil, where she eventually became prioress. She and the other nuns were turned out when the convent was taken over, at which point Abelard arranged for them to enter the Paraclete, an abbey he had established. It was at about this time that a correspondence between the two one-time lovers sprang up. Heloise encouraged Abelard in his philosophical work, and he dedicated his profession of faith to her. Their letters stand as a powerful window to 12th-century Church politics as well as to their private relationship.

    RENE DESCARTES (1595-1650)
"I am thinking therefore I exist."
    (Latin: Cogito ergo sum)
from the Discourse on Method Rene Descartes was a famous French mathematician, scientist and philosopher. He was arguably the first major philosopher in the modern era to make a serious effort to defeat skepticism. His views about knowledge and certainty, as well as his views about the relationship between mind and body have been very influential over the last three centuries. Regulae or Rules for the Direction of Mind written in 1628-9 but not published until 1701. This work shows Descartes interest in method which he shared with many sixteenth and seventeenth century scientists, mathematicians and philosophers. One source of this interest in method was ancient mathematics. The thirteen books of Euclid's Elements was a model of knowledge and deductive method. But how had all this been achieved? Archimedes had made many remarkable discoveries. How had he come to make these discoveries? The method in which the results were presented (sometimes called the method of synthesis) was clearly not the method by which these results were discovered. So, the search was on for the method used by the ancient mathematicians to make their discoveries (the method of analysis). Descartes is clearly convinced that the discovery of the proper method is the key to scientific advance. For a more extended and detailed discussion of these methods, see John Cottingham , The Rationalists

    38. Boethius, Educator, Statesman, Philosopher
In 476 Odoacer, an Ostrogothic general, deposed the Emperor Romulus Augustus andtook the (His biography of Boethius has only lately been discovered.
    http://justus.anglican.org/resources/bio/274.html
Anicius Manlius Severinus Boethius (Boh-EE-tee-us) was born in about 475 and died in about 524. He appears on some calendars as Severinus, on 23 October. To avoid conflict with the feast of James of Jerusalem , I have moved him to the 22nd. Anicius is not his forename (like Marcus or Gaius or Publius), but his clan name. His forename (which I do not know) is frequently omitted, just as Gaius Julius Caesar is often called simply Julius Caesar. Gaius is his forename, or praenomen (chosen by his father), Julius is his nomen, the name of his clan (gens), and Caesar (his cognomen) is the name of his family within the clan. Other names are added for various reasons, or simply to reduce confusion with others having the same nomen and cognomen. Thus, in the name Publius Cornelius Scipio Africanus, the "Africanus" is an agnomen ("accomplishment name"), indicating that this is the General Who Conquered Africa. Background In 476 Odoacer, an Ostrogothic general, deposed the Emperor Romulus Augustus and took the throne for himself. (This date is traditionally given as the Fall of the Roman Empire.) In 493 Odoacer was replaced by Theodoric, another Ostrogoth, who was recognized as Emperor of the West by the Emperor at Byzantium (whose daughter then married Theodoric). The Goths at that time were Arians. (That is, they honored Jesus as the Incarnate Word, and honored the Word as the first creation of God, but not as co-eternal with the Father. The Watchtower Society, also called J-'s Witnesses, are the best-known Arian group today.) Theodoric did not seek to impose Arianism on his subjects, and kept the traditional forms of government, including many Romans along with Goths among his advisors. His reign was a time of peace and prosperity, his decisions were usually just, and his subjects had little to complain of.
