Taft (right in white suit), ca. 1903, from Joseph Ralston Hayden papers Over the past one hundred years or more, a large number of University of Michigan faculty and alumni and other citizens of the state of Michigan have played a decisive role in shaping relations between the United States and the Philippines. The Bentley Historical Library has collected the papers of many of these men and women. This guide updates information published in two previous guides to the library's Philippine-related manuscript collections, and provides links to online finding aids that provide more detailed information about many of the collections. The 1980s was truly a very special decade. Historically, there was the EDSA People Power Revolution in 1986 that toppled the Marcos dictatorship. This was triggered by the 1983 assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino, Jr. In sports, Grandmaster Eugene Torre topped the 1982 Chess Interzonals held in Toluca, Mexico that allowed him to enter the World Eliminations, eventually succumbing to Hungarian Zoltan Ribli in a close series 6-4. Leopoldo Serrantes finally broke a 24-year drought by winning the bronze medal in the light flyweight division at the 1988 Seoul Olympics. Lady kegler Arianne Cerdena also took home the gold medal in the exhibition event of bowling. In music, the second coming of the British/European wave saw great bands like Duran Duran, A Flock of Seagulls, Culture Club, U2, and the like hitting the top of the charts in the United States and the Philippines. At the University of the Philippines, a different kind of new wave invaded its campus, more specifically, the College of Arts and Sciences Bridgeway that connected the 2nd (Chemistry) and 3rd (Physics) Pavilions. It all started in 1980 when freshmen from Lourdes School Quezon City like Leo Herrera-Lim, Nash Gonzales, Bong Pizzaro, Dante Mayo, Manolo Quizon, Jun Pineda, Ray Paulino, Joey Sebastian, Arthur Ortega, Gene Mercado and Eric Guevarra were looking for a place to stay. Initially, they stayed at AS 101 which, unfortunately, was also the tambayan of Kappa Epsilon. Not wanting to be recruited, the group moved to the bridgeway, a vacant spot no one in UP would consider using as a tambayan, particularly during the rainy season.

    Philippines lands $1B Lehman pledge
Foreign investors lost confidence in the Philippines due to politcal and economic instability By Amabelle Layug CNN Hong Kong MANILA, Philippines (CNN) Lehman Brothers has pledged to invest up to $1 billion in the Philippines recovery fund. The move by the American investment bank will give the ailing Philippine economy a dramatic boost this year, according to Philippine House Speaker Jose de Venecia. The $1 billion Philippine Recovery Fund will buy problem debts from banks, to stimulate various parts of the economy, particularly housing. But critics say Lehman's input may be more of a publicity stunt designed to win favor for politicians and future business for the investment bank.

Near the arrow's tip in the town of Quezon, Dr. Susie Cayaon operates the Luke Society clinic, along with her husband, Ben. The area is so isolated that frequently the nearest working telephone is 90 miles away. Palawan is both beautiful and treacherous. Orchids hang from lush tree branches, while cobras hide in the underbrush. Palms sway over white beaches, as mosquitoes breed in stagnant pools, heightening the threat of malaria. Poor living conditions on the island are a constant for its people, and it is against this daily fact of life that the Luke Society wages its battle.

U.S. to brief Philippines on Abu Sayyaf fight
A member of the U.S. military contingent. The team's findings could lead to a grant of additional U.S. equipment and training ZAMBOANGA, Philippines (CNN) A team of 23 U.S. military and anti-terrorist experts left for Manila Thursday to report on their assessment of the military offensive against a Muslim bandit group linked to Osama bin Laden's al-Qaeda network. The U.S. advisers will meet with top Philippine military officials after spending a week in Zamboanga observing Philippine troops in their campaign against the extremist Abu Sayyaf group. The Abu Sayyaf have been holding a group of captives, including an American couple, since they were kidnapped in May. Some hostages have been released, some have escaped while others, including an American citizen, have been executed. "They [the U.S. team] quickly identified the problem regarding the shortage of resources when it comes to mobility like inter-island vessels, cargo planes, helicopters and trucks," Marine Col. Francisco Gudani, an operations official for the Philippines' Southern Command, told reporters.

before the 1898 Revolution In search of spices The First Mass Planting the Cross: (detail of the shrine ceiling)
Don Carlos told Magellan that not all chieftains obeyed him, because they said they were as good men as he. So Magellan convoked all the chiefs and told them that unless they would obey Don Carlos as their king, he would have them killed and give all their possessions to the King. On the 26th of April Rajah Zula, one of the chiefs of Mactan send 2 goats as present to Magellan, apologizing that he could not give more since Lapulapu the other chief refused to obey the King of Spain. Rajah Zula nevertheless assured Magellan that with European reinforcements he would be able to subdue his rival. However, instead of sending reinforcements, Magellan without knowing the terrain volunteered to fight Lapulapu. After Magellan's defeat, the Cebuanos lose heart and repudiated their alliance killing the remaining 20 Europeans and burning their ship the Concepcion. Thus, most of them returned to their idols. They burried on the ground both the Cross and Our Lady's statue. But they keep with them the Santo Niño whom they revered as the "Bathala", the Supreme God. They invoke Him in time of drought, by giving a ritual bath to the Santo Niño in the seashore. In the time of epidemy, they made a procession around the village with this statue. Not everything therefore is lost in this first effort to Christianize the country. These miracles made them know that this Statue represents the one and true God.

Jul 16, 2005 Arroyo hanged by history
    By Leslie Davis
But frantically finding ways to plug the holes in her sinking ship is surely not the only thing occupying Arroyo's time. As with leaders the world over, there is a legacy to think about. And undoubtedly this must pain Arroyo as much, if not more, than the large brick-bats she has had to endure recently. For not only do surveys reveal that she is the most distrusted leader in Philippine history, she may very well go down as leaving as shameful a legacy to democracy in the Philippines as dictator Ferdinand Marcos, who was ousted in a people-power revolution in 1986.
As rumors swirl through the sultry and polluted Manila air of possible resignation, with a revolutionary council, a military junta or some other kind of beast emerging from the mess, one must ask how it is that the Philippines came to this precarious point. Is it simply a matter of inherently unwieldy politics, of a system that encourages corruption? Or does it simply have to do with Arroyo herself?
