Philippine History and Culture Series
Edited by Hector Santos
M embers of the Philippine History Group of Los Angeles (PHGLA) write articles on all topics of Philippine history and culture. PHGLA has no political stand on historical matters. We believe that a good historian must not be an advocate for an ideology and that an advocate for a cause, no matter how noble, cannot be a good historian. Nevertheless, each member of PHGLA has his own personal point of view that other members respect. Our member articles are under the heading, "Member Articles." PHGLA seeks outstanding articles from nonmembers and publishes them here under "Guest Articles." PHGLA welcomes opinions that most participating members may not agree with and provides a forum for them to be heard. Their opinions are published in these pages under "Opposing Views."

    • "The Ati-Atihan Festival" by Reuben Domingo. This quasi-religious spectacle has elements of both the sacred and the profane. It is similar to the Mardi Gras in New Orleans and the Carnaval in Rio de Janeiro but is not celebrated during the Holy Week and comes from a completely different origin. The author traces one possible historical origin of this boisterous and raucous celebration. Warning: This page contains several large graphics files which may slow down your download. Philippine History
Early History - The Negritos are believed to have migrated to the Philippines some 30,000 years ago from Borneo, Sumatra, and Malaya. The Malayans followed in successive waves. These people belonged to a primitive epoch of Malayan culture, which has apparently survived to this day among certain groups such as the Igorots. The Malayan tribes that came later had more highly developed material cultures. In the 14th cent. Arab traders from Malay and Borneo introduced Islam into the southern islands and extended their influence as far north as Luzon. The first Europeans to visit (1521) the Philippines were those in the Spanish expedition around the world led by the Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan. Other Spanish expeditions followed, including one from New Spain (Mexico) under López de Villalobos, who in 1542 named the islands for the infante Philip, later Philip II.
Spanish Control -
The conquest of the Filipinos by Spain did not begin in earnest until 1564, when another expedition from New Spain, commanded by Miguel López de Legaspi, arrived. Spanish leadership was soon established over many small independent communities that previously had known no central rule. By 1571, when López de Legaspi established the Spanish city of Manila on the site of a Moro town he had conquered the year before, the Spanish foothold in the Philippines was secure, despite the opposition of the Portuguese, who were eager to maintain their monopoly on the trade of East Asia.

triving to discover what is our niche in this vast Mother Earth is part of our conquest in LIFE...
Lemme recall...
We left Gensan office (WMC) for Landan, Polomolok, South Cotabato after lunch(15 May 1999). Our trip was a very bumpy, muddy, and rocky one.
I had several trips in the past via going-to-hell-like-roads and "penitentiary" terrains but that was the worst one! The road to Landan and Sitio Salkak was excruciatingly rough on us. Must be because it was raining for the past few days. The mobile we were following got deeply buried and hardly stucked in the thick hardened mud several times! Hey, I hope I was able to count it, but anyways, it was seemingly countless. :) At about 3:24 PM, we felt like we were not travelling by land but instead we were sitting on a small Titanic ship and the tragedy was about to happen again in the 15th of May 1999!

ANALYSIS The 'people power' dilemma CNN.com Asia More news from our Asia edition MESSAGE BOARD The Philippines IN-DEPTH Joseph Estrada: Downfall of a president Arroyo declared a state of rebellion Tuesday after supporters of her predecessor, Joseph Estrada, marched to the presidential palace in what authorities said was an attempt to topple the government.
