Muslim-Christian Relations in the Philippines: Redefining the Conflict
by Prof. Datu Amilusin A. Jumaani, 28 October 2000
My Brothers and Sisters in Humanity
My Brothers and Sisters in Islam
Distinguished Peace Builders About a couple of months ago, relations between the Muslims and the Christians in the Philippines have once again been provoked into a confrontational stance with the problem over the Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) armed movement for an independent Islamic state in the South and the audacity of the Abu Sayyaf for hostage rampage. While these may seem to be a problem on peace and order, the side effects of an economy on a downturn, they nonetheless trigger an alarm that it is not “all quiet at the southern front” to borrow a line. This means, something of the disturbing part of the past is being disturbed once more. What is again being stirred murky is the regard of the Muslims against the Christian Filipinos and vice-versa. The recidivism in the Muslim-Christian encounter in the country has raised a major question whether the solution or the line of action taken to resolve the so called “Muslim problem” is tenable or not. In this respect, the national leadership as well as the other power blocs believe that whatever infirmity or shortcomings there are in the solution, that is, the 1996 Peace Agreement between the Philippine Government and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF) particularly on the establishment and operation of autonomy in Muslim Mindanao, is mainly a matter of effective management. It is understandable why the central administration of the Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (ARMM) has been pressured to answer serious allegations on irregularities in handling development funds and other financial assistance for reconstruction and rehabilitation.

Philippine History In A Nutshell Ferdinand Magellan is the first European known to have visited the Philippines. He spotted the islands around March 16, 1521, during his circumnavigation of the globe. Point of fact, the Spanish explorer was the proverbial male driver: lost, but unwilling to admit it. Still, his ships were falling apart and his crews were sick and malnourished and constantly whining, “Are we there yet?” so there was some pressure on the big guy to find land, or at least ask somebody for directions. Of course, there wasn’t anyone Ferdinand could ask for directions, since these were uncharted waters, which is why he must have been ecstatic when he found his ships surrounded by what we now know as the Philippine islands. He dropped anchor off Cebu , claimed the islands for King Charles I of Spain, and went ashore, glad that his trials at sea were finally over. Unfortunately, Ferdinand’s trials on land were not over, a fact he could have hardly missed when a local chief killed him. But Magellan’s murder didn’t keep the Spanish from sending still more expeditions to the islands in the decades that followed, and they finally set up a settlement in 1565. The Spaniards decided to make Manila the capital of the islands because of its excellent bay and the productive farmlands that surrounded it. They also decide to name the islands the “Philippines”, after King Philip II of Spain, who reigned from 1556 to 1598. I think it would have been interesting if they’d named the islands after King Charles, instead. After all, he was the king when the islands were found, right? Then the Philippines would have been called the Charlenes, or perhaps the Charlie Islands, or perhaps even the Charlie Chain.

Little is known of the early human settlement of the Philippines. Scientific evidence remains inconclusive. It is generally accepted that the first significant human settlement occurred sometime during the most recent ice age, the Pleistocene Epoch. At that time sea levels were lower, creating land bridges that connected the Southeast Asian mainland to some of the present-day islands of the Malay Archipelago, south of the Philippine Islands. Historians theorize that Paleolithic hunters from the mainland may have followed herds of wild animals across these land bridges, later finding their way to the Philippine Islands. Some of these early migrations to the Philippine Islands were made by the ancestors of the present-day people of the Aeta and Agta tribes. These people continue to be primarily hunters and food gatherers, much as their ancestors were thousands of years ago. They are one of the world’s few remaining populations of Pygmies, who are characterized by shorter-than-average height. The Spanish colonizers of the 16th century called them Negritos, a term that is still widely used today. People of Malay descent, who now make up the majority of the population, are believed to have settled in the Philippines in several waves of migration after the 3rd century bc. Their languages developed independently because they settled in widely scattered villages, or barangay. Each barangay included from 30 to 100 families and was ruled by a datu, or chieftain. The economy was one of subsistence, with each village producing most of what it needed, and land was held in common. The villagers engaged in both shifting (slash-and-burn) and settled agriculture. Religion was animistic, or based on the worship of ancestors and other spirits, such as nature deities.

Sexual relationships in the Philippines

If you are traveling to the Philippines, you may be interested in sexual relationships with locals, and no, I do not mean the services of prostitutes or other commercial providers. While you can meet Filipinas or Filipinos interested in sex accidentally, the chances of success are not particularly high if you are there only for a limited period of time. On the other hand, Filipinas and Filipinos often are sexually attracted to foreign people. For young Filipinas, it is chic to have a Western boyfriend. So, there must be a trick to overcome the time-consuming "accidental", and to link more effectively the sexual interests of foreign visitors with those of locals. Try the Internet. Or, more to the point: try www.AdultfriendsFinder.com . The service lists some 15,000 Philippines residents explicitly interested in non-commercial sexual relationships. While there are more males on the search than females, there are indeed an amazing number of women using the service. Listings are divided into categories: men seeking women, women seeking men, men seeking men, women seeking women, men seeking couples or groups, and women seeking couples or groups.

Manila money changing - Travelers Cheques traveler checks cash cards
Changing money or travelers checks in Manila can sometimes be easy or difficult
US$ Travelers Checks US$ Travelers checks can be changed at most banks in Manila although you may have to go to their Head Office branches for even small amounts of traveler checks - say more than US$500. There is a per traveler check charge so changing one large traveler check can be cheaper than two small ones. Major hotels will also change US$ Travelers Checks if you are staying with them. Major Super Store Malls will also change US$ Travelers checks. Remember, you will need to produce your passport when you change Travelers Checks. Non-US$ Travelers Cheques. Traveler cheques, not in US$ can be difficult to change. Major international hotel chains may change non US$ traveler cheques if you are staying with them or the best bank for sterling pounds traveler cheques is the Standard Chartered bank in Makati. The China bank in UN Avenue, Ermita will change sterling travelers cheques up to 200 pounds per day. Cash US$ US$ Cash is the easiest money form to change in Manila or the rest of the Philippines. US$ cash can be changed to Pesos at almost any bank, hotel, major shopping mall or money changer. Most retailers including restaurants and taxi drivers will accept us dollars cash although this is officially not permitted. It is always best to avoid spending US$ cash at retail places as not only is it officially not permitted but the rate you get will be poor and change might be difficult

Welcome to the Philippine History Group of Los Angeles home page! We are a small group of individuals with different backgrounds but who share a common interest in Philippine history. We meet every second Saturday of the month for coffee and breakfast and to discuss a selected topic of Philippine history. Since many of you cannot join us for reasons of distance, schedule or whatever, we decided that we would share with you a few of the things we had enjoyed discussing and arguing about. Because various events are scheduled to celebrate the Philippine Independence centennial now and in the next few years, we are showcasing articles related to that tumultuous period when the 20th century arrived. We have tried to cover topics that are not too well known and we think you will find our choices interesting and provocative.
