Geography of the the Philippines
World Facts Index Philippines Map of the Philippines Off the coast of eastern Mindanao is the Philippine Trough, which descends to a depth of 10,430 meters. The Philippines is part of a western Pacific arc system that is characterized by active volcanoes. Among the most notable peaks are Mount Mayon near Legaspi, Taal Volcano south of Manila, and Mount Apo on Mindanao. All of the Philippines islands are prone to earthquakes. The northern Luzon highlands, or Cordillera Central, rise to between 2,500 and 2,750 meters, and, together with the Sierra Madre in the northeastern portion of Luzon and the mountains of Mindanao, boast rain forests that provide refuge for numerous upland tribal groups. The rain forests also offer prime habitat for more than 500 species of birds, including the Philippine eagle (or monkey-eating eagle), some 800 species of orchids, and some 8,500 species of flowering plants. The country's most extensive river systems are the Pulangi (Rio Grande), which flows into the Mindanao River; the Agusan, in Mindanao which flows north into the Mindanao Sea; the Cagayan in northern Luzon; and the Pampanga, which flows south from eastCentral Luzon into Manila Bay. Laguna de Bay, southeast of Manila Bay, is the largest freshwater lake in the Philippines. Several rivers have been harnessed for hydroelectric power. The Climate The Philippines has a tropical marine climate dominated by a rainy season and a dry season. The summer monsoon brings heavy rains to most of the archipelago from May to October, whereas the winter monsoon brings cooler and drier air from December to February. Manila and most of the lowland areas are hot and dusty from March to May. Even at this time, however, temperatures rarely rise above 37° C. Mean annual sea-level temperatures rarely fall below 27° C. Annual rainfall measures as much as 5,000 millimeters in the mountainous east coast section of the country, but less than 1,000 millimeters in some of the sheltered valleys.

LAND AND CLIMATE
Land Area
Aurora Province has a total land area of 308,122 hectares, representing about one percent of the country's total land area. Location
Aurora Province is located on the East-Central side of Luzon Island. It is the northernmost province of Southern Tagalog (Region IV). It is bordered on the north by the provinces of Isabela and Qurino, on the west by Nueva Ecija and Nueva Viscaya, on the south by Bulacan and Quezon, and on the east by the Pacific Ocean. The province's main link to the rest of Luzon is through a narrow mountain gravel road that twists through the Sierra Madre Mountain Range. The road is located between Baler and Bongabon, Nueva Ecija.

Topography
The province of Aurora covers the eastern portion of the Sierra Madre Mountains, hence it is generally mountainous. There are flat lands unevenly distributed throughout the province. Its coastline spans 328 kilometers in length. The municipality of Dingalan, in the south, has the most irregular topography. The main drainage systems of Aurora consist of six rivers:
  • Aguang River, Baler

  • Introduction
  • "Geographers study the locations and distributions of features on the earth’s surface. These features may be the landmarks of human occupation or the properties of the natural environment, or both." (Blij, 2) Part 1 of the lesson introduces the geography of the Philippines, by comparing the basic traits to those of the U.S. It also gives the student the opportunity to study the physical geography using an atlas. Students will locate a number of geographical features, and cities on a map. Students will be quizzed on the map they have compiled. Part 2 of the lesson allows students to study the population density of the Philippines in comparison to that of the U.S. This lesson helps students understand where people are located in the Philippines.
