(Homily Fourth Sunday, A)
It is good to be back in Holy Family after the two week visit to Asia. You have probably noticed the new vestments which are from the Philippines. It was a wonderful trip except for the disappointment of not being permitted to go to Vietnam*. We did, however, have a great experience in the Philippines and also got to spend some days in Taiwan and Bangkok. So much happened that I am sure I will be telling you about it during the coming year. This Sunday though I want to be brief since we are beginning Catholic Schools Week and our principal Mr. Stephen Morissette will be giving a presentation. Our Catholic School exists because of the Gospel call of Jesus. In today's reading of the Beatitudes we see how different we must be from the world around us. We want to help parents to raise their children with those values. It is sometimes so hard for parents. They can feel overwhelmed, for instance, by advertising which pressures their children to get certain brands of shoes and clothes. I saw a tragic example of that when I was in the Philippines. American style advertisements are constantly on television and billboards. One priest told us that children there, boys and girls, will actually prostitute themselves to get money to buy the right kind of clothes. The poison of our consumer society, what the pope calls the "culture of death," has spread thru the whole world.

The Philippines has a unique blend of eastern and western cultures. While most of South East Asia necessarily is a blend of Chinese, Malay and Indonesian traits, Philippine culture has been marked by long periods of Spanish and subsequently American occupation. Religion One of the greatest impacts of the Spanish Period was the introduction of Christianity on the islands. Spanish clergy converted a large amount of Filipinos to the Roman Catholic faith. As a result, today the population is almost 92% Christian - of which an overwhelming majority of 83% are Roman Catholic, and 9% Protestant. About 5% of the population is Muslim and 3% are of Buddhist and other faiths. Language The Philippines is a linguistically diverse nation - there are almost one hundred and seventy two native languages and local dialects. The national language is Filipino, which is based on Tagalog. Tagalog was the national language during the American period. Filipino, with its basis in Tagalog, but containing elements of other local languages, was adopted as the national language in 1973. Both English and Filipino are promoted as official languages for the purposes of education, government and commerce. Apart from Tagalog, other dominant languages are Cebuano, Klokano, Hiligaynon, Bikol, Waray-Waray, Kapampangan, Pangasinan, Kinaray-a, Maranao, Maguindanao and Tausug. Cuisine Philippine cuisine is as diverse as its people. There is Chinese Filipino food, such as pansit (noodles), lumpia (vegetables rolled in edible wrappers), siopao (steamed filled buns), siomai (dumplings). The Spanish introduced new flavors such as olive oil, paprika, saffron, ham, sausage and cheese into traditional food. Today Philippine food is an exotic blend of variations of Chinese, Spanish and Mexican dishes made with tropical local ingredients.

These are sites about the United States occupation of the Philippines in the early half of this century. Many Americans felt
like the United States was going over American moral boundaries when it took over the Philippines (since the Philippines was on the other side of the world). Many Filipinos believe that America wanted to exploit the Philippines because I think many people were forced to work in the mines and factories (just as in Spanish times). Also, many people were killed trying to get the Americans out, whether they were Warays, Tagalogs, Cebuanos, Boholanos, Ilocanos, Bicolanos, Kapampangans, etc.

CULTURE OF IMPUNITY SURROUNDS JOURNALIST DEATHS http://www.seapabkk.org MANILA ( SEAPA/Pacific Media Watch ): A rash of attacks on Filipino journalists in the last three weeks underscores the most glaring threat to free and independent journalism in the Philippines. While the country's press remains one of the freest and most vibrant communities of journalists in Southeast Asia, its members - particularly those outside Metro Manila and other major urban centers - have been targets of violence for years, and there appears to be nothing being put forward to change this trend. The apparent murder of Fernando Consignado, a correspondent of Radio Veritas based in Laguna, south of Manila, last Wednesday represented the fourth murder of a Filipino journalist in two weeks - the fifth since January and the 54th since 1986. "Only Iraq has seen more journalists killed so far this year," the Committee to Protect Journalists notes. On the one hand, the journalists are clearly being targeted by various

Baybayin - The Ancient Script of the Philippines
by Paul Morrow This language of ours is like any other, it once had an alphabet and its own letters that vanished as though a tempest had set upon a boat on a lake in a time now long gone. "To My Fellow Children”, Jose Rizal, 1869 English translation by P. Morrow T he tempest in Rizal's verse struck the Philippines in the 16th century. It was the Spanish Empire and the lost alphabet was a script that is known today as the baybayin. Contrary to the common misconception, when the Spaniards arrived in the islands they found more than just a loose collection of backward and belligerent tribes. They found a civilization that was very different from their own. The ability to read and write is the mark of any civilization and, according to many early Spanish accounts, the Tagalogs had already been writing with the baybayin for at least a century. This script was just beginning to spread throughout the islands at that time. Furthermore, the discovery in 1987 of an inscription on a sheet of copper in Laguna is evidence that there was an even more advanced script in limited use in the Philippines as far back as the year 900 C.E.

The People-Managed Health (PMH) Database aims to put into one collection these wealth of experiences coming from communities, NGOs, and government entities. As part of the Health Research Development Information Network ( HERDIN ) of the Philippine Council for Health Research and Development ( PCHRD ), the PMH database makes available in the internet a learning database on people-managed health reflecting the advanced experiences in primary health care programs and community health in the Philippines. The PMH database project is part community health research initiatives of the Institute of Philippine Culture (IPC) of the Ateneo de Manila University. IPC also hosts the BUKAL (Bahagian at Ugnayan sa Kalusugan) e-group of civil society health organizations. This virtual network grew out of a March 2001 Philippine Consultation on "Partnerships in People-Centered Health", and is coordinated by the BUKAL working group. The collection of bibliographic entries and abstracts is now available at IPC, ADMU Library as part of the IPC Resource Center Collection. It will also be posted on the websites of Health Information Village or E-Health and the Rizal Library of the Ateneo de Manila University. This will make the PMH database accessible to professionals, health students, researchers, academic organizations, health institutions, health and development agencies and libraries in the Philippines and other countries.
