WOW Philippines General Profile of the Philippines
Introduction
The visitor to Metro Manila commonly sees the Philippines as the most westernized of Asian countries and in many ways it is. But there is also a rich underlay of Malay culture beneath the patina of Spanish and American heritage. National cultural life is a happy marriage of many influences, as the indigenous Malay culture is assimilated and adapted to different strains in a practice typical of Malay temperament. An upsurge of Philippine nationalism stimulated a desire to preserve the ancient heritage without restricting its openness to foreign artistic influence. The Philippines is an archipelago of 7,107 islands. It stretches from the south of China to the northern tip of Borneo. The country has over a hundred ethnic groups and a mixture of foreign influences which have molded a unique Filipino culture. Before the Spanish explorers came, Indo-Malays and Chinese merchants had settled here. In 1521 the Spaniards, led by Ferdinand Magellan, discovered the islands. The Spanish conquistadores established a colonial government in Cebu in 1565. They transferred the seat of government to Manila in 1571 and proceeded to colonize the country. The Filipinos resisted and waged Asia's first nationalist revolution in 1896. On June 12, 1898, Emilio Aguinaldo declared the Philippines independent from Spain and proclaimed himself president. After ruling for 333 years, the Spaniards finally left in 1898 and were replaced by the Americans who stayed for 48 years. On July 4, 1946, the Americans recognized Philippine independence.

The Philippine Islands are a cluster of more than 7000 islands, lying north of the Malay Peninsula in South East Asia. From north to south, the archipelago extends over nearly 1850 kilometers. Philippines is of volcanic origin, it has more than 20 active volcanoes, and regularly experiences earthquakes. The total land area of the Philippines is about 300,000 square kilometers, and the largest city is the its capital, Manila. The two largest islands are Luzon to the north, and Mindanao to the south, with a host of smaller islands in between, including some unnamed and uninhabited patches of land. A large part of the terrain is mountainous; the volcanic eruptions in the area have given the Philippines, fertile soils and spectacular landscapes and underwater areas. Unfortunately, deforestation and uninhibited harvesting of both flora and marine life have deprived the Philippines of its once rich and diverse resources. The predominant ethnic groups on the islands are of Malayan origin, with some Chinese influence. There are also the Mestizos (Filipino-Spanish and Filipino-American) who are evidence of the long Spanish and American occupation of the country. The islands got their name from the Spanish - they named the country Filipinas after King Philip II of Spain. Due to extensive proselytization by the Church during the Spanish era, the Philippines are the only Christian nation in Asia, with over 82% of its population following the Roman Catholic faith. The Filipinos are a very outgoing and friendly people, whose ethos is ruled by 'bayanihan' - a communal spirit which binds them together, and embraces all visitors to their country as well.

Philippine Culture: June in the Philippines
By Angelica Viloria Viloria.com June sees students going back to school. From worrying about how to keep kids busy and what to feed them when they are at home, parents move on to worrying about homework and what to give their children for baon. It is kind of strange that the start of the school year is also usually the start of the rainy season. Every year, there are calls to move the opening of the school year to another month but of course, they're just calls. With the rainy season comes diseases like dengue, flu, leptospirosis so when in the Philippines at this time, do take extra care. School kids keenly watch out for the announcement of typhoon signals as these dictate whether classes will be suspended. There have been changes in the rules quite recently. Elementary students, for example, will only have classes suspended if the typhoon signal is 2. Previously, with typhoon signal 1 only, grade schoolers would already be off from school. June is typically the month for weddings in other countries and here in the Philippines, "June brides" also get some mileage. There are bridal fairs and numerous features on brides and weddings in magazines although in our country, December and January are the months when most weddings actually take place. The third week of June sees the celebration of Father's Day too something we have patterned after the rest of the world. Younger fathers are now more involved in the raising of kids and in various family activities and chores though providing for the financial needs of the family is still topmost in the scale of things. More wives/mothers work now, though, and so division of labor at home becomes of greater concern.

Agriculture is the main source of income in Sagada. Cabbages, carrots, and potatoes are common crops while rice is planted for household consumption. Sagada also earns significantly from its tourism industry. It is known for its pleasant climate, pine sceneries, rocky terrain, waterfalls, centuries-old burial caves, rice terraces, local weaving and hanging coffins. The locals of Sagada are called Igorots. The dialect spoken is Kankana-ey though interestingly; most locals express themselves better in English than in Filipino, the national language. Also, unlike most Philippine towns, Sagada's populace is predominantly Anglican. Photos courtesy of SagadaGalerie
