Off the main overland route and with a recent history of martial law and endemic corruption, the country has struggled to attract tourists in similar numbers to many of its southeast Asian neighbours. Terrorist Activity Travellers are advised to avoid most of Mindanao, an island group in the southern Philippines, especially the Zamboanga peninsula, Basilan, Tawi-Tawi and the Sulu archipelago, where ethnic and religious animosities fuel ongoing violence. Abu Sayyaf, a Muslim extremist group who have claimed responsibility for attacks on foreigners, operate out of this area.

The Philippines are marked by a true blend of cultures; east really meets west. The main background of the Philippines people is Indonesion and Malay, along with some Chinese and Spanish elements as well. The history of American rule and contact with merchants and traders culminated in a unique blend of east and west, both in the appearance and culture of the people of the Philippines.
Hospitality, a trait displayed by every Filipino, makes these people legendary in Southeast Asia. Seldom can you find such hospitable people who enjoy the company of their western visitors. Due to their long association with Spain, Filipinos are emotional and passionate about life in a way that seems more Latin than Asian.
Religion:
The Spaniards introduced Christianity (the Roman Catholic faith) and succeeded in converting the overwhelming majority of Filipinos. About 83% of the total population belongs to the Roman Catholic faith. 9% of Filipino people are Protestant, 5% Muslim, and 3% are Buddhist or some other faith.
Language:
The national language of the Philippines is Pilipino, which is based on the language of Tagalog, although there are at least one or two dialects spoken in every region. English is both spoken and understood throughout the country, especially in business negotiations and in the government. The American occupation was responsible for teaching the Filipino people the American language. The Philippines is currently the third-largest English speaking country in the world. Hokkien, Cantonese, and Mandarin are spoken by older members of the Filipino-Chinese community.

The commission was retained, and government efforts to reduce population growth continued but hardly on a scale likely to produce major results.

The earliest inhabitants of the Philippines were the Negritos. Other tribes later arrived from Malaysia and Indonesia. In 1521, the Portuguese navigator, Ferdinand Magellan, financed by the King of Spain, landed on the islands and named them after Philip II of Spain. Friars converted the inhabitants to Christianity and today the Philippines is the only predominantly Christian country in South-East Asia. Spanish explorer Miguel Lopez de Legaspi established the first Spanish settlement in Cebu in 1565; he moved north and defeated the Muslim Rajah Sulayman and established a Spanish base in Manila in 1571, extending the area under Spanish control. In 1896, a revolution against Spanish rule led to the establishment of the first Filipino Republic in 1898, under General Emilio Aguinaldo. Later, the United States took control of the islands and a constitution was drawn up in 1935, giving the Philippines internal self-government.
Lacking any political experience, Corazon Aquino took a while to settle into the presidency. She was constantly threatened by the rump of Marcos supporters in the military who launched repeated but unsuccessful coup attempts, but earned the backing of most of the senior command by maintaining a hard line in the campaign against the NPA.

The Customs and Traditions are strongly influenced by the culture of Spain Mexico and the Roman Catholic religion. Each year, Filipinos from around the country hold major festivities known as Barrio Fiesta which commemorate the patron saints of the town, villages and regional districts. The festival season is celebrated with church ceremonies, street parades in honor of the patron saints, fireworks, beauty and dance contests for generations of old and new, and cockfighting tournaments.

      • Bayanihan: the creation of alliances with neighbors and the helping atittude whenever one is in dire need. Oftentimes, the Bayanihan spirit in action can be seen when the tire of a bus gets flat. All Filipino men will go down and assist the bus driver in whatever undertakings to get the bus back on going. Close Familial Ties: Filipinos are famous for the close family ties, and this goes even for the Filipinos mixed with other Asian or European blood. The primary social welfare system for the Filipino is the family. Pakikisama: Pakikisama, or harmony, in English, involves getting along with others to maintain a harmonious relationship.
