Petroleum engineering
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The neutrality of this article is disputed
Please see discussion on the talk page Petroleum Engineering is involved in the exploration and production activities of petroleum at the upstream end of the energy sector. Upstream, refers to the source of the petroleum, the petroleum deposit, usually buried deep beneath the earth's surface supplying flow to consumers as a river supplies the ocean. The diverse topics covered by petroleum engineering are closely related to the earth sciences. Petroleum engineering topics include geology geochemistry , geomechanics, geophysics oil drilling , geopolitics, knowledge management, seismology, team building, team work, tectonics, thermodynamics, well logging, well completion, oil and gas production, reservoir development, and pipelining. It is an increasingly technical profession that involves procuring reserves from places that predecessors deemed too difficult or not economic with the technology of the day or commodity prices. While not thought of as highly technical in some circles, this is a fallacy. The use of high technology equipment, high speed computers, innovative materials, team management philosophies, statistics, probability analysis, and knowledge management, is usually coupled with the reality of only indirect measurement of most essential facts due to being buried under miles of earth. One look at the number of patents held for use in the industry is testimony to the highly technical nature of this field.

PETROLEUM ENGINEERING
MEDIAN INCOME: $114,616 Petroleum engineers identify and solve problems in the oil and natural gas industries. They apply their knowledge to the exploration, exploitation, drilling, production, processing, and transportation of recovered hydrocarbons from beneath the earth's surface. They face these unique challenges by using physical, mathematical, and engineering principles to produce petroleum products as well as nuclear and synthetic fuels. The oil and gas excavation process begins with geologists, who search for geological clues of their presence. When a possible source is found, sound waves are bounced off the formations of the reservoir within the earth to determine the presence of oil or gas. Then drilling teams move in. This can mean that a new road has to be built to reach a remote part of the landscape, or an oilrig needs to be built for ocean harvesting. Once the petroleum is out of the ground, it must be transported to oil refineries or gas processing plants. Processing yields such products as jet fuel, gasoline, and asphalt. Plastic, styrofoam, clothing (polyester), and carpet fibers are also created from crude oil at chemical facilities. Petroleum engineering is a multidisciplinary field that incorporates teams of specialists to maintain a high level of production. Chemical engineers work on petroleum production processes, research and development, and safety; mechanical engineers work on the mechanical applications of harvesting and refining petroleum; environmental engineers may be involved with environmental monitoring and clean-up processes; and geological engineers work closely to develop innovative drilling techniques.

What do petroleuml engineers do?
What do petroleuml engineers do? B.S. degree graduates from UMR work in the areas of drilling, production, and reservoir engineering. If you go into production, you will be responsible for daily monitoring of production and injection wells and designing remedial treatments to maintain oil and gas production. Production engineers maintain wells that are already drilled and find ways to improve the current production levels and the ultimate oil and gas recovery. If you become a reservoir engineer, you'll be responsible for making long-term decisions and solutions for hydrocarbon production including location of new wells and evaluation of future production. Reservoir engineers determine how much oil exists in a reservoir and how much of it can be recovered. If you go into the area of drilling, you'll supervise the drilling and completion of new wells to produce oil and gas to the surface.

... Engineering Careers In Petroleum Engineering
What Do They Do? In a sense, petroleum engineers make the world run. They search the far corners of the earth to find and produce oil and gas supplies. They design oil wells, storage tanks, and transportation systems. They supervise the construction and operation of oil and gas fields. Petroleum engineers are researching new technologies to allow more oil and gas to be extracted from each well. They keep the energy flowing to light and heat our homes. They fuel our transportation systems and keep our industries operating. Economical and environmentally safe production of petroleum requires a wide spectrum of knowledge. Petroleum engineers also contribute to non-energy concerns such as underground waste disposal, ground water remediation, and hydrology. Examples of Work Projects
  • Consulting with geologists and contractors in Australia to design and supervise a drilling operation Developing new equipment to optimize oil and gas production Creating computer models to simulate oil well performance Lobbying for environmentally safe oil recovery processes

Historically, petroleum engineers have been in short supply in the marketplace, save for a couple of instances when oil companies felt the need to downsize due to a temporary oversupply of qualified staff. "Today, there aren't enough of us to go around," proclaims Dr. Craig Van Kirk, professor and head of the petroleum engineering department at the Colorado School of Mines in Golden. "The job market is excellent, salaries are the highest among all engineering fields, and oil and service companies are looking over the long haul to determine their staffing needs."

xx Petroleum Engineering (M.S., M.E., Ph.D.) Petroleum engineering is not a narrowly focused engineering discipline. A petroleum engineer must have a good understanding of chemistry, physics, geology, economics, statics, thermodynamics, strength of materials, fluid behavior, rock behavior, the interaction between fluid and rock, and other fields. Graduate studies are an excellent avenue to investigate the relationships among these fields, and to gain a better understanding of the complexities of petroleum reservoirs. Research Research in the Petroleum Engineering Department of CSM has a worldwide reputation for immediate usefulness in managing drilling, field development, operations, well stimulation, and other production and reservoir problems. Some current research projects include:

What is Petroleum Engineering?
Anyone with an interest in earth sciences and a strong desire to get paid for traveling the globe might consider the possibility of a career as a petroleum engineer. Petroleum engineers seek out oil and gas reservoirs beneath the earth's surface. They develop the safest and most efficient methods of bringing those resources to the surface. Many petroleum engineers travel the world or live in foreign countries - wherever their explorations take them to find and recover valuable reserves. These travels can lead to the deserts, high seas, mountains, and frigid regions of the world in order to find untapped sources of energy for the world's population. The work of petroleum engineers keeps the world running. They help provide the energy to heat our homes, cook our food, and fuel our cars. However, petroleum engineers study more than just combustible material. Manufacturers use petroleum to create more than three hundred everyday products from medicines and cosmetics to plastics and textiles. Earning a college degree in petroleum engineering does not mean you must earn a living in another country. Plenty of other jobs exist in the profession at home, as well as abroad. Petroleum engineers might oversee drilling sites or work indoors in a laboratory or at a computer. A wide range of career possibilities exists within the profession.
