Letter to the Editor - published September 7, 2005, Vancouver Courier
To the editor, Re: "Vets differ on raw food for pets debate," Aug 21. As the president of a raw food manufacturing company and former manager of Vancouver Animal Control, I would like to voice my concern with regard to your article, as well as give the public some information on choosing a food for their companion animals. Dog's digestive tracts are very short and need to process food very quickly. What goes in today should be what comes out tommorrow. To process at this speed, the digestive system needs to be acidic. Acidic systems break down food quickly, promote fast, easy digestion and proper absorption of vitamins and minerals. When things work the way they should, the stool will be properly formed; when not, it gets messy. This I know from my experience at the pound. Dogs and cats in the wild eat their prey whole; meat, bones, fur, and the contents of the prey's stomach, usually vegetables. A nutritionally-balanced diet using whole foods with not a microwave in site. When buying any food for your companion animal, consider the following:

THE TRUTH ABOUT CATS AND DOGS by Ann Martin T he pet food industry, a billion-dollar, unregulated operation, feeds on the garbage that otherwise would wind up in landfills or be transformed into fertiliser. The hidden ingredients in a can of commercial pet food may include roadkill and the rendered remains of cats and dogs. The pet food industry claims that its products constitute a "complete and balanced diet" but, in reality, commercial pet food is unfit for human or animal consumption.

Web page: http://www.newsagepress.com/foodpetsdiefor.html#author J anuary 1990 was when my research and investigation began into the commercial pet food industry. Prior to 1990 I had always fed my pets - dogs and cats - a commercial pet food. This changed when after feeding my two dogs, a Saint Bernard and a Newfoundland, a well-known brand of dog food - a brand that I had fed them for a few years - both dogs became ill with vomiting and excessive thirst. Our veterinarian, an English gentleman, advised me to put them on a home-made diet for a few days. Both dogs did very well on this diet of cooked hamburger, brown rice and grated vegetables. Two days later I switched them back to the commercial diet and encountered the same problems. Both the veterinarian and I were convinced there was something in the food that was causing the problem. A private lab showed that the food contained excess levels of zinc at 1120 parts per million (ppm) - a level that would have caused the symptoms the dogs displayed - and over 20 other heavy metals. The pet food company chose to take the position that it was not responsible.

The practice of boiling down euthanized dogs and cats for industrial fat and protein causes an uproar in St. Louis
by Stephanie Simon
ST. LOUIS It started with footage of Blacky and Scoop, melt-your-heart dogs with no one to claim them, alone at the city poundand due to be put to death within hours. "No one wants them. Alive, that is," the reporter said. The film then cut to a rendering plant that boils down the city's euthanized dogs, along with dead pigs and cows from local farms and leftover bones, hooves and innards from slaughterhouses. The end products are used to make cosmetics and fertilizer, gelatin and poultry feed, pharmaceuticals and pet food. It was the pet food that got people. The report last month by KMOV-TV's Jamie Allmanheadlined "What's Getting Into Your Pets"suggested that dead dogs and cats from local shelters were ending up in kibble. As proof, Allman aired footage of a tanker truck entering the rendering plant, a truck emblazoned with the motto "Serving the Pet Food Industry." Also See:

Interactive Tools: Recommended: var sc_project=664218; var sc_partition=5; var sc_security="80468889"; Main Holistic Care Holistic Health Index : The Whole(istic) Truth About Pet Food The Whole(istic) Truth About Pet Food
by Christie Keith "Although we have come to accept commercial foods as being normal or natural ways to feed animals (and indeed ourselves), in fact they are not. They are simply what we've gotten used to in the last few decades. But nothing we can produce commercially ever can rival those mysteriously complex foods manufactured for eons by nature itself."
Richard Pitcairn, DVM
I'm always taken by surprise when people ask me what I feed my dogs. It's not an uncommon question, but I've never come up with an easy answer. They expect me to say "Iams" or "Nature's Recipe" or "Science Diet," when the truth is what I feed my dogs is food. You knowfood. The stuff wolves and coyotes and jackals eat. They don't sell sacks of kibble in the wild. The usual image people have of someone who "cooks" for her dog is an infatuated owner of a tiny, spoiled dog, someone used to coaxing their finicky pet to have a little more filet mignon before dessert. In reality, the number of people who have abandoned "nutrition in a sack" and opted for homemade pet food is huge, and growing. There are books and videos and magazines and catalogues devoted to holistic pet care and the preparation of healthy homemade diets.

100. WORDING OF PET FOOD LABELS
Wording of pet food labels (including a handy definition list). Today, words usedin the ingredient list can be hiding what is really in the food.
http://home.att.net/~wdcusick/02.html
Wording of Pet Food Labels
(including a handy definition list) One pet food company advertises their food as better than others because the main ingredient in their food is poultry meat and others use feathers. But when we read the labels on all the different pet foods we can't find "feathers" listed as an ingredient in any of them. The words used on pet food labels can hide many evils. They are sometimes misunderstood, often ignored and can be confusing. To limit confusion when listing each ingredient in a food, all pet food companies should be required to also use the International Feed Number (IFN) that has been assigned to each feed grade ingredient. Then we could clearly identify the ingredients in each pet food and be able to make intelligent choices amongst them. To help you determine what may be in the pet food you are now buying, here are definitions of some words that can be found on most pet food labels today:
  • By-product: An ingredient produced in the course of making a primary food ingredient; a secondary or incidental product. Feathers are a by-product of poultry meat processing. Feathers which are removed from a carcass during production of poultry meat are then hydrolyzed (pressure cooked with steam until they are an edible gel) which makes them an acceptable feed grade ingredient. Hydrolyzed feathers have been assigned the (IFN) International Feed Number 5-03-795 and can appear on a label as "Poultry By-products." On page 158 in the AAFCO book, Official Publication, 1994, Association of American Feed Control Officials Incorporated
