There is no species with a diet as highly processed as the domestic pet. In addition to questionable raw materials, pet foods are often processed and heat-treated, which negatively affects their nutrient profiles. In recognizing the government and pet industry's inability to produce meaningful recommended dietary guidelines, what results is a diet high in preservatives, chemicals and deficient in nutrients. According to Consumer Reports magazine (Feb., '98), "More than half of the cat foods and more than one-fourth of the dog foodsincluding some 'super premium' typesfell significantly short in at least one of the nutrients in guidelines set by the Association of American Feed Control Officials. Among the concerns: low levels of potassium, required for certain metabolic processes and nerve transmission, and calcium, necessary to build bones." Just like humans, pets need a proper diet combined with vitamin and mineral supplementation in order to prevent sickness, disease and promote longevity.
